CM Sukhu inaugurates newly established SDPO office at Nadaun
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 3 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday inaugurated the newly established office of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) at Nadaun, aiming to strengthen the law and order infrastructure in the region.
The SDPO office will oversee operations at Police Station Nadaun and Police Station Sujanpur, improving coordination, efficiency, and supervision of law enforcement activities. Covering a jurisdiction of 82 Gram Panchayats and one Nagar Panchayat (NAC), the new office is expected to enhance policing, ensure faster response times, and provide better administrative oversight.
In addition, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed 'Rajasva Sadan' at Nadaun, built at a cost of Rs 18.50 lakh, and dedicated the Panchayat Ghar in Kalur, constructed at a cost of Rs 1.14 crore.
While addressing a gathering in Kalur, the Chief Minister said that when the construction of the Panchayat Ghar started, he was an MLA at that time and was happy to inaugurate it today.
He announced that the liquor shop in Kalur will be shifted back to its previous location.
He stated that ever since the state government has reinstated the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the state has been facing financial restrictions from the Union government. 'As a result, Rs 1,600 crore as financial assistance to Himachal Pradesh has been curtailed by the Union Government,' he said.
The Chief Minister further announced that the Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding School in Amlehar will commence from the next academic session. This will be the first CBSE-affiliated Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding School in the state. Along with quality education, the state government will also ensure nutritious meals in this school and in the coming years, around one thousand students are expected to enrol in this institution.
He added that the state government has fixed a minimum support price of Rs 90 per kilogram for naturally grown raw turmeric, Rs 40 per kilogram for maize, and Rs 60 per kilogram for wheat. He also said that improvements in the state's healthcare services are underway and the medical college and a cancer hospital would soon be operational in Hamirpur.
CM Sukhu also inspected the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art Multipurpose Sports Complex at Kharidi in the Nadaun area. Being developed at a cost of Rs 65 crore, the facility is set to become a major hub for sports and youth engagement in the region. He directed the officers to complete the work by the end of this year.
The modern complex will feature an 8-lane swimming pool, a shooting range, and dedicated spaces for wrestling, boxing, kabaddi, yoga, table tennis, and badminton. The Chief Minister stated that similar multipurpose sports complexes are being developed across the state to provide constructive avenues for youth and to help curb the menace of drug abuse.
Emphasising the critical role of sports in promoting a healthy and disciplined lifestyle, the Chief Minister said, 'This sports complex will be a symbol of our commitment to nurturing talent and ensuring the physical and mental well-being of our youth.'
Later, the Chief Minister also inspected the ongoing work at the Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding School in Amlehar, within the Nadaun assembly constituency.
MLA Sanjay Rattan, HRTC Vice Chairman Ajay Verma, Nagar Panchayat Nadaun President Shammi Soni, District Collector Amarjeet Singh, SP Bhagat Singh, Congress leader Captain Prithvi Chand, and other dignitaries were present at the event. (ANI)

Following leopard attacks that left minor girl dead, woman injured in separate incidents, Gujarat village on edge
A week after a 9-year-old girl was allegedly dragged away and killed by a leopard, and three days after a 40-year-old woman was injured in another such attack, a village in Gujarat continues to be on edge with forest department teams of two other districts deployed in the area to locate the big cat. The officers from Banaskantha and Kevadia districts are also trying to ascertain if the attacks in Kolvan village of Sagbara taluka in Narmada district were carried out by the same animal or two different leopards. The village has seen multiple protests by residents, prompting the elected representatives to get involved in the matter. The forest department, meanwhile, has deployed trap cages and cameras and invited teams of experts to help catch the leopard. The first incident occurred on May 27, when the minor girl, Shreyal Vasava, was allegedly dragged from outside her house and mauled by a leopard. The second incident took place on Sunday when a woman, Bebi Vasava, was allegedly attacked by a leopard while she was sleeping in her hut in her farm. Though she was rescued by villagers who had arrived at the scene on hearing her screams, she suffered injuries on her hands and legs besides losing a part of her right ear. Following protests in Kolvan village, forest officials handed over a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased minor. Range Forest Officer (RFO) Sagbara Abhay Singh told The Indian Express, 'We have installed 10 trap cages and trap cameras, and also taken help of drone cameras. A special tranquilisation team from Banaskantha, which has helped rescue leopards that stray into revenue areas, has been roped in. We also have one specialist team from the zoo from Kevadia that is helping us understand the behaviour of the wild leopards…' Singh said the forest officials are first addressing the question if the two attacks have been carried out by the same leopard. Singh said, 'The first question is whether the two leopards are same or different. We are trying to ascertain the same by examining pug marks from 550 periphery areas and zeroing down on the routes that the leopard might have taken… We are hopeful that in the next couple of days, we will be able to rescue it.' Singh said since the girl and the woman were attacked within a space of two kilometers, it was likely that the leopard in both the cases is the same. 'The woman, who is the second victim, is also of a small build like the 9-year-old. In leopard attacks, the size of the victim is also of consequence. There is a big possibility that it could be the same leopard but we are trying to confirm this through examination and probe. We have been regularly shifting the cages to increase the chance of the leopard being trapped,' Singh added. Even though the forest department is confident of catching the leopard in a few days, the villagers don't share the optimism. Anil Valvi, the brother of Bebi, said, 'It has been over a month since the leopard attacks have increased in the area and a single person venturing out close to sunset is risky now … We all are scared. The forest department is setting up cages but leopards do not walk into traps these days. They must tranquilise and catch the leopard…' Bharuch MP Mansukh Vasava, who visited Bebi on Tuesday, said a 'taskforce' should be formed to deal with the human-leopard conflict in the region. 'I will appeal to the government to form a special taskforce to tackle the problem of the leopard-human conflict. Now, more leopards are straying into the areas of human habitation from the forests and steps must be taken to resolve the problem,' said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.

PM to lay foundation stone, dedicate projects worth over Rs 46,000 cr at Katra
Jammu, June 4 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Chenab bridge and visit the bridge deck and will also lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore on June 6 at Katra in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. A PIB release said that PM Modi will visit J&K on June 6 and in line with his commitment to boost rail infrastructure and connectivity in the region, he will visit and inaugurate the Anji bridge and flag off Vande Bharat trains. The Prime Minister will also dedicate the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation, it said. The release said that the 272-km long USBRL project, built with around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country aiming to transform regional mobility and driving socio-economic integration. The Prime Minister will also flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar and back, said the release, adding that in a major boost to last-mile connectivity especially in border areas, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various road projects. He will lay the foundation stone for the road widening project from Rafiabad to Kupwara on National Highway-701 and the construction of Shopian bypass road on NH-444 worth over Rs 1,952 crore. He will also inaugurate two flyover projects at Sangrama Junction on National Highway-1 in Srinagar and at Bemina Junction on National Highway-44. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra worth over Rs 350 crore. It will be the first medical college in Reasi district contributing substantially to the healthcare infrastructure in the region. Chenab Rail Bridge, the architectural marvel, situated at a height of 359 meters above the river, is the world's highest railway arch bridge. It is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. A key impact of the bridge will be in enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. Through Vande Bharat train moving on the bridge, it will take about 3 hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing existing travel time by 2-3 hours. Police station in-charge's vehicle stolen in Tripura's Bishalgarh, triggers row
Unidentified people stole a vehicle belonging to the Bishalgarh women police station in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Monday evening, right in front of a crowd of onlookers, prompting criticism from the CPM that the ruling BJP's 'tactics of using anti-social elements to suppress the Opposition voices' had got out of hand. The Mahindra Bolero, belonging to the police station in-charge, was learnt to have been parked near an old fuel station in the area when it was stolen. Eyewitnesses said two people reached the area riding a scooter, quickly snatched the keys of the Bolero, shoved the driver out and fled with the parked vehicle. Two more people arrived in a van. A local shopkeeper described the sequence of events and said the entire act happened so swiftly that by the time the police arrived—about five minutes later—the men had vanished. A woman, who was also a witness to the theft, shared her dismay and shock at such a daredevil crime in public. Hours later, two people were stabbed and robbed of Rs 11.5 lakh in the Rastarmatha area under the Bishalgarh rural development block on Tuesday. Sagar Miah, a resident of Matinagar in the area, said he and his father Harej Miah were on their way back home with the money they sold a plot of land for when a gang of three people attacked them with knives, injured him and his father badly, and fled with the money. Incidents of robbery, snatching, theft, petty crimes, stabbing etc have been on the rise in parts of Bishalgarh recently. On Tuesday, Inspector General (Law and Order) Ipper Manchak visited the area where the police vehicle was stolen. 'We are trying to track the criminals. In the incident of robbery, the victim is hospitalised. We are trying to verify all sources. Once all information is available, an FIR will be registered and culprits will be identified. On the theft of the police vehicle, we have started naka checking everywhere. When the culprits are caught, we can say for certain who were behind this,' he said. Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma told reporters that the police were also looking at the source of the money claimed to have been stolen. 'Usually, people don't keep such huge amounts of cash. They have given some clarification on how they got the money from cattle sale, paddy sale and money sent by a relative staying in Qatar, but the amount of money still doesn't add up,' Debbarma said, adding that Sagar Miah's claim that he might go abroad if he gets necessary permissions and that he needed the money for that purpose was also not entirely convincing, either. Meanwhile, CPM Bishalgarh subdivisional secretary Partha Pratim Majumder said the proverbial genie had got out of the bottle now, blaming the rise in such crimes on the BJP's alleged use of anti-social elements against Opposition parties. BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya termed the allegations 'baseless'. They (CPM) don't have anything to say. They try to concoct stories. We don't have anything to do with anti-socials. History stands testimony to the fact that the CPM does politics with the support of anti-socials. Communists have sympathised with Naxals recently and members of that party fraternise with anti-socials at the local level. The police will act freely (in Tripura),' he said. IG Ipper Manchak said the pattern of crimes was changing as urbanisation and prosperity increased in the state. 'Earlier cattle thefts used to occur. That pattern is no longer the same. Police are working on this new pattern. Police will have to change tactics. If there is any individual or criminal organisation behind it, we have to go deeper. This is nothing out of control. Thirty per cent of property crimes have come down since last year. Cybercrime is one of our main priorities now. That is many times higher than this. All incidents will be followed by detection and punishment,' he said. Despite the crimes reported in close succession to each other in Bishalgarh, the official defended the overall law and order situation. 'Crime is coming down across the state including in Bishalgarh. Especially property-related crimes and NDPS cases are under control,' he said.
