Raksha Bandhan 2025 gift from government: Free bus ride for women in these states

Raksha Bandhan 2025: As India prepares to celebrate Raksha Bandhan 2025 on Saturday, 9 August, various state governments have announced a thoughtful gift for women – free bus rides to mark the occasion. This special initiative is a gesture of goodwill, reflecting the spirit of sibling love and empowerment of women across the country. While some states are offering this benefit just for the day, others have extended the offer over multiple days to ensure maximum participation and convenience. Here's a detailed look at the states offering free bus rides for women on Raksha Bandhan 2025, and what each state has planned. Chandigarh & Tricity: Free Rides Within the Region Women living in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula will enjoy free travel on CTU and CCBSS buses, but the offer is limited to routes within the Tricity region. This Raksha Bandhan 2025 gift from the government ensures safe and cost-free transportation for sisters travelling to meet their brothers within the area. Uttarakhand: Keeping the Tradition Alive In Uttarakhand, the long-standing tradition continues in 2025, with the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation providing free bus rides for both women and children on Raksha Bandhan. This annual gift from the state government ensures that families can travel comfortably without worrying about the cost. Madhya Pradesh: Free Bus Rides and Monetary Gift for Women Madhya Pradesh is going the extra mile this year. On 9 August 2025, women in Bhopal and Indore will be able to ride city buses for free as part of the state's Raksha Bandhan 2025 celebration. In addition to the free bus ride, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced a special financial gift under the Ladli Behna Yojana. Beneficiaries will receive ₹1,500 directly in their bank accounts, along with an extra ₹250 festive bonus. A total of ₹43.9 crore has been distributed to over 28 lakh women to support LPG cylinder subsidies and promote women's empowerment in the state. Rajasthan: Free Travel for Two Days For the first time ever, Rajasthan is extending its free bus travel scheme for two days – on 9 and 10 August 2025. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has confirmed that all state-run buses will offer free rides to women within the state's borders. This expanded benefit will help accommodate the festive rush and ensure that no sister is left behind. Haryana: Free Rides for Women and Children In Haryana, women and children below 15 years can enjoy free bus travel starting from 12 noon on 8 August until midnight on 9 August. This initiative, approved by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and confirmed by Transport Minister Anil Vij, applies to intra-state routes as well as services heading to Delhi and Chandigarh. More buses, rejig of routes on cards to decongest city traffic

Chandigarh: In a major move to ease traffic congestion and encourage city commuters to use public transport, the UT department is planning to rejig routes and increase bus services to high-traffic destinations within the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The department initiated a study of the routes and destinations within the city where there is a requirement to increase the number of buses and their frequency," said a senior UT official. Emphasis is also being laid on how to improve last-mile connectivity for commuters so that the transport department can connect commuters right up to such destinations. "Destinations like the high court, secretariats, Panjab University, and PGIMER have high traffic and commuter volume. The plan is to increase frequency, run special bus services from the catchment areas, and improve convenience for the commuters so that they don't have to walk long distances from the bus stop to their destination," said the official. The transport department has approached the ministry of housing and urban affairs to approve the allocation of an additional 328 e-buses for the Chandigarh administration under the financial assistance scheme of the PM e-bus Sewa Scheme on the GCC model. Notably, the transport department in 2024 requested that the ministry sanction 70 e-buses in addition to the existing 100 e-buses under the financial assistance scheme of the scheme. In a letter to the ministry, the director of transport and chief executive officer of City Bus Services Society also informed the ministry that the ministry of urban road transport and highways has not provided 100 electric buses to CTU/CCBSS to date. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The delivery of these buses was stuck in legal tangles for more than a year. "In order to ensure greener and eco-friendly public transport coverage within the Tricity, the ministry has been requested that an additional allocation of 328 e-buses should be approved for the city under the scheme," said the official. The CTU is the mainstay of the public transport system in the Tricity, with Mohali having no Tricity bus service available and Panchkula having very limited local bus service. Buses Completing Life Cycle CTU buses as well as City Bus Services Society (CCBSS), are going to complete 15 years during the years 2025-26 and 2026-27. By the end of 2025-26, 100 buses under the CCBSS will be condemned, and 70 are required to strengthen the fleet numbers. Another 170 buses will complete their service cycle by the end of FY 2026-27, and in addition to this, under the CTU, 88 buses will complete their service life. As per the central govt directions, "Certificate of registration in respect of vehicles owned by the state transport undertaking shall expire after the lapse of 15 years from the date of initial registration of the vehicle. Govt vehicles that complete 15 years of age should be scrapped through the registration vehicle scrapping facility." By the end of the financial year 2026-27, the transport department plans to have 428 new buses. These include replacements for buses nearing their service life and new buses to strengthen the bus fleet of the transport department. All these new buses will be e-buses. The transport department has 358 diesel buses and 80 e-buses on the Tricity routes.
