Delhiites lost Rs 70 crore to cyber conmen in 184 cases in first half of 2025: Govt in Lok Sabha

Residents of Delhi lost around Rs 70 crore to cyber fraud cases registered in the Capital in the first six months of this year, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said in Lok Sabha while answering a query about cybercrime in the city. As per data presented, the number of cyber financial fraud cases registered up to June 30 this year was 184. Last year, the number stood at around Rs 817 crore with 1,591 cases. Data also shows that Rs 64 crore was lost to cybercrimes, the highest number in the last 11 years from 2014. Rai also mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs provides financial assistance under the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) scheme, to states and Union Territories for their capacity building such as setting up of cyber forensic cum training laboratories, hiring of junior cyber consultants, and training of law enforcement agencies personnel, public prosecutors and judicial officers. In addition, the Delhi Police have set up Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) equipped with the latest equipment and software to investigate complex and sensitive cyber crime cases. Besides, one Cyber Police Station in each of the 15 districts of the Delhi Police has become functional since 2022 to deal with cybercrime-related cases in Delhi, Rai said. Rai added that help desks at all police stations are equipped to assist women affected by cybercrimes. A specialised unit, Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC), is also functioning under the Delhi Police to handle such cases with sensitivity and urgency. The Indian Express reached out to the Delhi Police spokesperson to ask about the number of cases this year compared to 2024, even though cases of cyber fraud are being reported regularly. However, there was no response.

New Delhi, July 30 (UNI) The government has released Rs 132.93 crore financial assistance under the 'Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC)' Scheme to States/UTs for capacity building including setting up of cyber forensic-cum-training laboratories, hiring of junior cyber consultants and training of LEAs' personnel, public prosecutors and judicial officers. Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha that to strengthen the mechanism to deal with cyber crimes, including cyber crimes against women and children in a comprehensive and coordinated manner, the government has taken several steps including commissioning Cyber Forensic-cum-Training Laboratories in 33 States/UTs. These are Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Punjab, Tripura, Puducherry, Chandigarh, J&K, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Manipur, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Delhi. In Tamil Nadu the laboratory is only partially functional. In Lakshadweep and Ladakh, the laboratory has not been established. The Minister said that although Police' and 'Public Order' are State subjects and States/UTs are primarily responsible for prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crimes including cyber crime through their Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), the Central Government supplements the initiatives of the States/UTs through advisories and financial assistance under various schemes for capacity building of their LEAs. NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) said that so far, over 9.42 lakh SIM cards and 2,63,348 IMEIs involved in cyber fraud and digital arrests have been blocked by the government. MoS (Home) Sanjay Bandi , replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, also listed an 11-point strategy to combat cybercrime. "MHA has set up the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) as an attached office to deal with all types of cybercrimes in the country in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. The 'National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal' ( NCRP ) has been launched, as part of I4C, to enable the public to report incidents pertaining to all types of cybercrimes, with special focus on crimes against women and children," the MoS said in his reply. As per CFCFRMS, operated by I4C, over Rs 5,489 crore has been saved in more than 17.82 lakh complaints so far, Bandi stated. The Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC) has been established at I4C, where representatives of major banks, financial intermediaries, payment aggregators, telecom service providers, IT intermediaries, and states and UTs work together for immediate action and seamless cooperation to tackle cybercrime. MHA has also provided financial assistance under the Cyber Crime Prevention Against Women and Children (CCPWC) scheme to states and UTs for capacity building. Cyber forensic-cum-training laboratories have trained 24,600 law enforcement personnel, judicial officers and prosecutors, the reply noted. Live Events A state-of-the-art National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (Investigation) has been set up and has provided services in around 12,460 cybercrime cases so far. The Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform, namely CyTrain portal, has trained over 1,05,796 police officers from states and UTs. The module Pratibimb, which maps locations of criminals and crime infrastructure, has led to the arrest of 10,599 accused, 26,096 linkages, and 63,019 cyber investigation assistance requests.
