Tesla chargers booted off the New Jersey Turnpike — and Musk cries 'corruption'

Sixty-four Tesla (TSLA) Superchargers will be removed from the New Jersey Turnpike, starting on Friday. Upon hearing the news, Elon Musk tweeted, 'Sounds like corruption.' The highway's authority is not renewing Telsa's contract to provide EV chargers, and is instead turning to Applegreen, which currently operates service areas and restaurants on the NJT and Garden State Parkway. In a 2023 amendment to the state's deal with Applegreen, the company agreed to install 240 universal, open-access EV chargers in all 21 service areas on the Turnpike, as opposed to Tesla-only Superchargers in eight locations. Despite Musk crying foul, Tesla said in a social media statement that they saw this coming. 'We have been preparing for three years for this potential outcome by building 116 stalls off the New Jersey Turnpike, ensuring no interruption for our customers.' It went on to say that it offered to build universal Superchargers using NACS and CCS1, with equipment upgrades, at all service plazas in the state, and were still willing to do so if New Jersey Governor should reverse the decision. In 2020, the NJTA approved an agreement with Tesla to incease the number of EV chargers on the highway from 20 to 76, and to build infrastructure so that third-party providers could install at least two dozen more. How to Use Tesla Superchargers With Any Non-Tesla EV

Good news for electric vehicle owners: You can charge your electric car at Tesla's Supercharger stations in the US, even if you don't drive a Tesla. A couple of years ago, Tesla announced that select stations had been fitted with adapters for other brand EVs, and drivers in California, Texas, New York and other states have reported using them successfully since then. Earlier in February 2023, the White House issued guidance that EV manufacturers who wanted to receive federal funding had to make their chargers brand-agnostic. That same month, Tesla announced a plan to open at least 3,500 Superchargers to other vehicles. Since then, most EV makers, including Stellantis, Mazda, Polestar and Lucid have announced they're switching to Tesla's EV charger. Read more: Bank of America Will Now Finance Your Home EV Charger In 2021, a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill set aside $7.5 billion to create a network of 500,000 public EV chargers by 2030, mostly on high-traffic highways and in densely populated residential areas. Tesla is among the companies financing the project, with a combination of private money and federal subsidies. S&P Global Mobility estimates that, as of January 2023, there were nearly 17,000 Superchargers and Tesla destination chargers in the US. The number has grown to an estimated 20,000 chargers as of January 2025. The company hasn't released information on where or how many Superchargers are currently available to non-Telsa EVs but you can scan any area for usable stations on the Tesla app. Tesla had promised to make at least 3,500 of its stations available to all electric vehicles by the end of 2024, as well as 4,000 Level 2 charging docks. Tesla has now opened up its 20,000 Superchargers to six brands -- Ford, Rivian, General Motors (GM), Polestar, Volvo, and Nissan -- with Mercedes set to join soon. Tesla has retrofitted select stations with a "Magic Dock," a CCS1 adapter that is placed on top of Tesla's NACS plug that enables non-Tesla EVs to charge at a maximum rate of 250 kW. To use a Supercharger: Download the Tesla app and create an account. Select "Charge Your Non-Tesla" and find a nearby Supercharger site. Add a payment method, select a stall, unlock the adapter and plug in your car. Tap "Start Charging." Select "Stop Charging" to complete your session. Payment is made through the Tesla app. Each Supercharger post has a label with a unique identifier. If you are taking the cable from post 4A, for example, select post 4A in the Tesla app to begin charging. Non-Tesla drivers can either pay as they go or sign up for a monthly $13 membership. The subscription get you a discounted rate, though it's still higher than what Tesla owners pay. That's to make up for "additional costs incurred to support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles," Tesla said in a blog post. According to the company, rates vary by location. Yes, you will incur a charge if you leave your vehicle plugged in too long "to help ensure stalls are open for everyone to charge," per Tesla.

Lucid shows off fast charging tech for upcoming Gravity SUV

The Lucid Gravity SUV might just take EV charging to the next level. Not only does it include a NACS charging port and access to the Tesla Supercharger network starting on January 31, but Lucid's new technology will allow it to charge quickly, even at slower stations. Lucid detailed in a press release how the Gravity uses innovative patented technology to boost the charging voltage of 500V stations to match its 926V battery pack. A similar feature is available on the Lucid Air, which upconverts lower power coming from a charger to 900V and downconverts its own power to power other devices or charge another technology also allows the SUV to take advantage of a station's maximum charging output while reducing cable heat. 'Lucid Gravity offers next-level fast charging speeds and seamless access to the top charging networks, including Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America,' said Emad Dlala, VP of Powertrain at Lucid. 'To enable this experience for our customers, we developed new, unique technology to allow the 926V Lucid Gravity to charge seamlessly at up to 400 kW on 1000V charging equipment and at sustained speeds of up to 225 kW on 500V architecture fast chargers, including Tesla V3 Superchargers.' At peak charging rates, the Lucid Gravity can reportedly add up to 200 miles in less than 12 minutes. For customers without access to a native NACS charger, the Gravity will come standard with CCS1 to NACS and SAE J1772 to NACS adapters. According to Lucid, the CCS1 adapter will be the first on the market to charge at 500A with 1000V. That same adapter is also able to charge at up to 400 kW at a CCS1 fast Gravity's battery pack is produced in partnership with Panasonic and features "chemistry enhancements" that should put it in a league of its own. Lucid claims that it can handle sustained higher-power charging without overheating, tow better than its competitors, and last for up to an EPA-estimated 450 miles. The electric SUV will also feature bi-directional charging, allowing owners to charge their homes or other devices at a rate of up to 80 A at 19.2 kW with the NACS charge port. RangeXchange, a feature first introduced on the Lucid Air, also enables charging another electric vehicle directly with the optional RangeXchange has always made gorgeous-looking cars, albeit with a fitting price tag. In this case, too, the automaker has done a great job of transforming the Air sedan into the Gravity SUV, complete with that classy yet minimalistic interior. If this sounds like something that belongs in your driveway, we have good news! The Lucid Gravity Grand Touring is available to order starting at $94,900, and Touring models will be available in late 2025 at a starting price of $79,900. The first Gravity completed production at Lucid's Casa Grande factory on December 5, 2024, so deliveries will likely begin early this year.
