Doppelmayr To Expand Canadian HQ by 185,000 Square Feet
Late last month, the ski chairlift manufacturer Doppelmayr announced plans to expand its Canadian headquarters in Saint-Jérôme, Québec, over the next 18 months with a new building that includes office, production, and warehousing structure, which covers 185,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, will nearly double the size of the preexisting headquarters and is aimed at helping Doppelmayr better serve the North American market, where, according to a press release shared by the company, there is growing demand. 'Our employees do an outstanding job completing all our ropeways on time and to the highest standards," said Gerhard Gassner, the Doppelmayr Group's managing director. 'The current facility has been expanded many times over 45 years, but we are now looking into the future of ropeway business, considering material flow, efficiency, and employee satisfaction,' added Luc Guy, the CEO of Doppelmayr Canada. 'The new facility will be a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility where we will continue to design and produce the highest quality ropeway systems in North America.'The architecture and design of the facility were being finalized as of May 23, when Doppelmayr published the press release. The company anticipated that construction would begin at the end of May, with the goal to have the facility producing ropeways by the last quarter of announcement follows the news of another facility expansion for Doppelmayr. In July 2024, the company shared plans to double the size of its Salt Lake City, Utah, project in Saint-Jérôme was facilitated, in part, by the Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED), which granted Doppelmayr $3 million in funding for its growing headquarters. The USA Wealth Report 2025 by international advisory firm Henley and Partners offers a comprehensive snapshot of how wealth is distributed—and rapidly growing—across major American cities. New York City remains the undisputed leader, home to the highest number of millionaires globally (384,500), including 818 centi-millionaires and 66 billionaires. Close behind is the Bay Area, with its booming tech sector powering a 98% surge in its millionaire population over the past decade—the fastest among the Top 10 wealth hubs. David K. Young, President at the Committee for Economic Development of The Conference Board (CED), points out in the report that 'despite a wave of policy changes and their subsequent implications around the world, the relative political stability, rule of law, economic prospects, culture of innovation, not to mention the US dollar remaining the global reserve currency, have squarely positioned the USA as an environment in which to do business and to invest.' New York City The Big Apple is the financial center of the USA and the wealthiest city in the world by several measures. The city comprises five boroughs and features some of the world's most exclusive residential streets, including 5th Avenue in Manhattan, where prime apartment prices can exceed USD 27,000 per m2. New York City is also home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by market cap — the NYSE and NASDAQ. Also featured in this year's USA Wealth Report are the Florida cities of Naples, Fort Lauderdale, and Boca Raton. Naples — often dubbed the 'Golf Capital of Florida for the Ultra-Wealthy' — has become an increasingly desirable location for retirement, while Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton are both recognized for their top-tier marinas, yacht clubs, and ultra-exclusive gated communities. All three cities continue to attract significant interest among wealthy investor migrants.

Calgary film industry optimistic for recovery after North America-wide slowdown
Southern Alberta residents can expect to see plenty of cameras and production crews over the coming months and years, according to some Calgary film industry insiders. After the 2023 Hollywood strikes cooled off local production, Calgary Economic Development (CED) received more scouting package requests in the first quarter of 2025 than any other Q1 in the last decade. It's a good indication that Alberta's Rocky Mountain views are in high demand, said CED president and CEO Brad Parry, with some of the biggest companies in the industry ramping up production again. "Netflix has a number of projects they're shopping around," Parry said. "We know Paramount, we know Apple, there's a lot of people that have a lot of pent-up projects now, that are going to start to, I think, hit the ground soon." The Directors Guild of Canada tracks ongoing productions by pay rates. Three projects currently in production in Alberta fall in their 'Tier A' category — which generally means they're higher budget productions, said Michelle Wong, a film industry consultant based in Calgary. One is a film adaptation of Reminders of Him, a romance novel by New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover. The third season of Billy the Kid, a western series produced by MGM+, is also filming around Calgary. "At first we thought maybe there would be a bit of a downer year," said Wong. "We're seeing actually something of maintaining what was last year, and maybe a slight tick up actually." Wong credits a shaky Canadian dollar and more resources available for Indigenous productions for the strong start to 2025. Bill C-11, which passed in April 2023, specifies Canadian broadcasters must provide opportunities to Indigenous people to produce programming, and has helped increase the amount of content produced by Indigenous filmmakers, said Wong. Uncertainty created by U.S. trade policy is also having an impact, Parry said, but Calgary's film industry is also becoming less reliant on American productions by welcoming projects from other markets. "Especially at the end of last year, we had a lot of projects coming from Korea," he said. "Now you're starting to see a few more of the European countries also start to look for ways to get some different vistas to shoot." Hundreds of union members out of work The head of the film industry union's Calgary branch says the provincial government could take steps to help stabilize the local industry. Damien Petti, president of IATSE Local 212, notes that of the more than 1,500 members available to work in film and television production, only about 65 per cent are currently employed. "Many people have a plan B and a supportive spouse," he said on The Calgary Eyeopener on Monday. "There's always been peaks and valleys, but there are a number of other factors that have changed rapidly," he added, referring to an increase in the number of tax incentives offered in other countries, meaning Canada now faces greater competition to attract big projects. He wants to see the province increase its base 22 per cent tax credit on production costs to 25 per cent. In a statement, Ministry of Finance press secretary Justin Brattinga said that Alberta's Film and Television Tax Credit Act was amended last year to widen its application window, expand the number of eligible production genres and offer additional access to the higher tax credit level for productions filming in rural and remote parts of the province. "Going forward, Alberta's government is monitoring developments in other jurisdictions and will continue to take steps to ensure the FTTC program remains competitive," Brattinga said in a statement. The long-running western drama Heartland has been renewed for a 19th season, Petti said, also teasing that other big projects are on the way that he can't yet reveal.

Man shot with plastic bullet and tasered after ‘concern for safety' in east Belfast
Police attended a house in the Strathearn Park area of east Belfast following a report of a domestic-related incident on Saturday evening, April 26. On arrival shortly after 7.15pm, officers became concerned for a man's safety. The PSNI said: 'Specially trained officers were requested and an Attenuating Energy Projectile (AEP) and a Conducted Energy Device (CED) were deployed during the incident to prevent a male from harming himself. He was safely detained and taken to hospital. 'A man in his 40s arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of a class A controlled drug following the incident remains in police custody at this time.' As is normal procedure when AEP and CED have been discharged, the office of the Police Ombudsman has been informed. A man in his 40s is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Monday 28 April for breach of bail. Enquiries are continuing in relation to the incident. The AEP forms part of the common weapon system approved for use by members of the police service, according to the College of Policing UK. Operational use of the AEP in the UK police service is limited to authorised officers who have been specifically trained in the use of the system. Meanwhile, a CED (taser) is a less lethal weapon system designed to temporarily incapacitate a subject through use of an electrical current that temporarily interferes with the body's neuromuscular system and produces a sensation of intense pain. The College of Policing says CEDs will not be routinely used to police public order or public safety events, but may be used as an option to respond to circumstances within the operation. The use of CED ranges from the physical presence of a drawn device through to the application of electrical discharge to a subject. Even before a CED is drawn, the mere visibility of an overtly carried holstered device may serve a deterrent value. It is one of a number of tactical options available when dealing with an incident with the potential for conflict.
