KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced that the state government is offering free full-time higher education to Sarawakians, including those already employed but without the opportunity to pursue further studies. Abang Johari said this initiative aims to develop Sarawak's human capital through higher education and skills training. In the press conference following the event, he stressed that the free education offer applies only to full-time studies and is fully supported by the state government. "Among the conditions, applicants must be native-born Sarawakians," he added. Starting next year, Sarawak will fund free education for 64 selected courses at state-owned institutions, including i-CATS University College, the Sarawak Centre of Technology Excellence (CENTEXS), University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.

Malaysian state to launch AI training program

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's state-owned agency Center for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) announced Monday an expanded skills training collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) that will help Sarawak achieve its vision of becoming Malaysia's premier artificial intelligence (AI) state by 2027. This move demonstrates their continued commitment to developing Sarawak's AI capabilities, CENTEXS and AWS said in a joint statement. According to the statement, AWS is launching three specialized AI development tracks with CENTEXS in 2025: executive AI briefings targeting 60 C-level leaders, AWS certified AI practitioner training for 80 civil servants, and advanced certification in machine learning engineering and data engineering for 120 university graduates. As part of Sarawak Digital Economic Blueprint 2030, the state aims to transition from a resource-based economy to an environmentally sustainable and technology-driven one, said the statement. It highlighted that the initiative will transform state government operations through integrated digital services, improving citizen experience and agency productivity. "Through our expanded collaboration with CENTEXS, AWS will help realize this vision by training professionals and enabling them to develop practical AI solutions that will drive meaningful impact for Sarawak," said Eric Conrad, regional managing director of worldwide public sector ASEAN at AWS. Meanwhile, CENTEXS Chief Executive Officer Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abdul Rahman said that the new innovation center, launching in August, will leverage generative AI and machine learning to develop practical AI solutions for key industries. Through partnerships with AWS and other agencies, they will create targeted solutions for government services and industries, including energy, agriculture, media, and other sectors, he added.

Keep up with rapid development of AI technology

KUCHING: The public should always keep up with rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to protect themselves from the risk of cyber threats, said Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi. He said Malaysians also should not view lightly the risks involved, such as the spreading of false information and content manipulation that can threaten national harmony. 'AI can sometimes be used as an effort that can lead to blackmail, such as using our pictures or voices, but not by us. So, this is one of the challenges we face. 'To avoid any victimisation in the future, I believe that we must be able to face all these developments that have agendas that can undermine or misuse AI... they always move fast, they are always ahead of the current technology,' he said. He said this at the launch of the MCMC Microsoft AI TEACH Programme at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) here today. Julaihi said that as part of initial measures to ensure the safe use of AI technology, the federal government introduced the National Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics Guidelines (AIGE) last year. Meanwhile, the two-day AI TEACH Programme, which began today, is being held in a physical and hybrid manner at several selected locations, including CENTEXS as the main site, in addition to the six SDEC Digital Innovation Hub sites statewide in Serian, Sri Aman, Sibu, Kapit, Mukah and Lawas. The MCMC-organised programme also has the cooperation and support of Microsoft Malaysia as well strategic partners such as CENTEXS, Sarawak Digital Economic Corporation (SDEC), Social Security Organisation and the Biji-biji Initiative. Julaihi said the programme has opened a new chapter in the digital expertise development agenda in the state, in line with the goals of the post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) mooted by the Sarawak government. It focuses on mastering basic AI skills, understanding the ethics of using technology and applying practical skills in preparation for the increasingly challenging and technology-based job market. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement that the MCMC Microsoft AI TEACH programme, which was launched on a pilot basis in June 2024, has successfully trained over 2,000 individuals from various backgrounds, especially vulnerable groups. This initiative has been implemented in eight states nationwide, namely Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Penang, Melaka, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor and Labuan.
