PG&E and California Fire Foundation Open Applications for Wildfire Safety and Preparedness Grants
More than $1 million in grants, public education, and outreach funded in 2025; Applications Accepted May 30 through June 30 OAKLAND, Calif., June 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Ahead of California's peak fire season, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the California Fire Foundation (CFF) are encouraging California-based fire departments and community-based organizations to apply for grants for wildfire safety and preparedness programs and projects. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on June 30, 2025, through the CFF website. Award notification will begin July 31, 2025. The grant program continues an eight-year partnership between PG&E and CFF. PG&E and The PG&E Corporation Foundation (PG&E Foundation) are providing a total of $1.65 million to CFF's Wildfire Safety and Preparedness Program (WSPP). The program continues to raise public awareness about wildfire safety and deliver resources to underserved communities in high fire-risk areas. The program includes a competitive grant program that last year awarded 55 local fire departments and community groups $750,000 in funding. This year's program includes increased funding for $950,000 in grant awards. Funding for these charitable donations comes from PG&E shareholders, not customers. In 2024, funding supported: Purchasing approximately 7,560 pieces of personal protection equipment including helmets, boots, gloves, goggles and fire shelters Removing over 21 acres of hazardous tree and brush Chipping and hauling of 1.5 million pounds of tree limbs, branches and other combustibles Conducting 22 prescribed fires or pile burns for forest management "Now in its eighth year, the Wildfire Safety and Preparedness Program serves as a constant reminder to Californians of the recurring and deadly nature of wildfires," said Angie Carmignani, Executive Director of the California Fire Foundation. "Whether during historic wildfire seasons or quieter periods, the program has remains steadfast – reaching communities year after year to ensure they're prepared for wildfire. Our partnership with PG&E has been instrumental in making this life-saving work possible and directly supports CFF's mission to strengthen disaster preparedness across our state." Since 2018, CFF, which administers and manages the program, has awarded 368 grants to fire departments and community organizations statewide, focusing its efforts in Northern and Central California. Funding targets communities identified as having extreme or elevated fire risk as identified by the California Public Utilities Commission. "PG&E is grateful for our ongoing partnership with the California Fire Foundation as we share the goal of helping our hometowns do everything possible to prevent wildfires. The projects that these grants fund, such as creating defensible space, enabling fuel-reduction programs and conducting fire-safety outreach campaigns, are essential across our service area and especially within underserved communities," said Mark Quinlan, PG&E's Senior Vice President, Wildfire, Emergency & Operations. How the Grants Help Communities From 2018 to the present, PG&E and the PG&E Foundation have provided $10.45 million in total support for fire safety awareness through the program. The charitable contributions are shareholder-funded, not paid for by PG&E customers. Since 2018, WSPP has funded: Specialized fire equipment and personal protective equipment Defensible space and vegetation management efforts Fuel/hazard reduction programs Fire prevention and emergency preparedness education, including senior citizen wildfire preparedness programs Partnerships with community groups in high fire-risk areas to distribute fire-safety information Fire safety outreach campaigns, including 12,000 multi-lingual brochures targeting under-resourced communities in English, Spanish, Chinese, Hmong, and Vietnamese The program develops and distributes in-language fire-safety messaging targeting Spanish, Chinese, Hmong, and Vietnamese communities. These efforts include a comprehensive media campaign consisting of outdoor billboards and in-language television, radio, and digital ads. The California Fire Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, aids firefighters, their families, and the communities they protect. Aurangzeb praises World Bank's valuable contributions to Pakistan

Joe Ledley opens new 3G pitch at Ysgol Greenhill, Tenby
The full-size artificial pitch at Ysgol Greenhill in Tenby was unveiled by the Cymru Football Foundation (CFF) as its latest 'Fit-For-Future' facility, following a major investment of nearly £400,000. The funding was part of the UK Government's Multi-Sport Grassroots Facility Programme, supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The project involved resurfacing and extending the existing 2G pitch, with additional support from Sport Wales and Pembrokeshire County Council. Councillor Rhys Sinnett, cabinet member for resident services at Pembrokeshire County Council, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to see the completion of this fantastic new 3G facility at Greenhill. "Thanks to joint funding from the Cymru Football Foundation and Sport Wales, through Welsh Government grant support, we've been able to deliver a top-quality surface that will benefit both the school and the wider community. "This £700,000 investment is not just about new turf – it's about creating opportunities for young people and residents of all ages to get involved in football and rugby, whether that's through competitive fixtures or recreational play. "The improved surface, extended playing area, new fencing and energy-efficient lighting mean this facility is fit for the future." The pitch will be managed by Pembrokeshire Leisure, with Councillor Sinnett calling the project a 'brilliant example of what can be achieved through strong partnership working and a shared vision for education and grassroots sport.' The pitch will be used by pupils during school hours and made available for community use in the evenings, supporting grassroots football and other sports. Former Cymru international Joe Ledley attended the opening, marking the 16th full-size 3G pitch in Wales backed by the CFF. Aled Lewis, director at the Cymru Football Foundation, said: "The Cymru Football Foundation is committed to investing in facilities that inspire communities. "A new facility in the heart of Tenby will enable more players to play, improve the experiences of current players and act as a hub for sport in the local community. "A huge thank you to our partners, UK Government and both Pembrokeshire County Council and Sport Wales in supporting the development of such a high-quality facility." Japan provides grant to support children's transportation in Papar

KOTA KINABALU (May 13): The Government of Japan has extended a grant of approximately RM157,733 to Caring For The Future (CFF) Malaysia Berhad under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP). The grant was used to purchase a van for transporting children of CFF to and from school. The van was delivered to CFF's facility in Papar on Tuesday. Yamashita Yoshito, Head of the Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu, represented the Government of Japan at the handover ceremony. The GGP is one of Japan's international aid initiatives aimed at meeting basic human needs. It supports projects that deliver tangible benefits at the grassroots level, especially those requiring timely humanitarian assistance. Since 1989, through the GGP, the Government of Japan has implemented 55 socially impactful projects in Sabah and Sarawak. These include the provision of vans for schools and welfare facilities, solar-powered electrification, and the enhancement of medical infrastructure — totaling over RM7 million in assistance to date. The Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu remains open to receiving and reviewing strong project proposals from NGOs and other non-profit organizations under the GGP.

Cheetah Cub Named Taylor Swift Is Doing 'All Too Well' After Rescue from Illegal Pet Trade
Taylor Swift, the cheetah cub, is just a few months old, and she's already had a few eras to her short life. The baby big cat started life in the wild with a mother to take care of her, but then was poached from her natural habitat in Africa by individuals looking to sell the animal into the illegal wildlife pet trade, according to the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). CCF — a nonprofit based in Namibia dedicated to protecting the declining cheetah population —rescued the cheetah cub and pulled her out of the exotic pet trade before she made it too far. When rescuers got hold of Taylor Swift, the cheetah, the cub was only three pounds and not much larger than the kitten of a domestic house cat. The cub spent her first weeks with the organization getting used to a healthy diet and starting touch training. The training "is essential to desensitize cubs to the gentle touch since Taylor will begin her vaccine regime soon," CFF founder and executive director Dr. Laurie Marker said in a statement. Marker said the cheetah cub was named Taylor Swift to honor the music superstar's devotion to felines. Taylor Swift is settling in well at the Somaliland center and adapting to life at a wildlife reserve. According to CCF, the center is a 1,800-acre facility with 5-12-acre enclosures, where rescue cheetahs can recover with access to the outdoors and plenty of space to play.
