Norsepower, COSCO join forces to boost wind propulsion in China
Norsepower has entered into a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Equipment (Nantong) (CHIC) to enhance the production and distribution of Norsepower Rotor Sails in China. This agreement aims to facilitate the serial manufacturing, sales, installation, and servicing of Norsepower's wind propulsion systems in the region. The collaboration is anchored by Norsepower's Rotor Sail factory located in Dafeng, China, which is recognised as the first facility globally dedicated to rotor sail production. This factory is expected to ensure the necessary capacity and quality for the mass production of Norsepower's technology. The partnership with CHIC is anticipated to bolster Norsepower's existing production capabilities, which also include a facility in Poland, thereby enabling the company to respond effectively to the increasing global demand for wind propulsion solutions. CHIC deputy general manager Zhang Jianxin said: 'We are excited to partner with Norsepower to advance wind propulsion technology. 'This cooperation will enhance innovation across product design, manufacturing, and business development, ensuring we deliver high-quality, energy-efficient solutions for the shipping industry.' The alliance will leverage CHIC's shipbuilding and offshore equipment expertise to foster innovation in wind propulsion technology, aiming to integrate Norsepower Rotor Sails more thoroughly into the regional shipping market. This initiative is designed to provide solutions to shipping companies in achieving reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with the stricter regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Norsepower CEO Heikki Pöntynen said: 'This agreement marks a significant step forward in expanding access to wind propulsion solutions in China. 'By combining Norsepower's technology leadership with CHIC's shipbuilding expertise, we are creating a strong foundation for advancing sustainable shipping. We will achieve breakthroughs in both product supply efficiency and application expansion.' Recently, Norsepower introduced Norsepower True Performance, a system that measures and monitors wind propulsion performance in maritime operations. It assesses the effectiveness of sails and ship propellers, providing shipowners, charterers, and regulatory bodies with precise data on the operational impact of Norsepower Rotor Sails. "Norsepower, COSCO join forces to boost wind propulsion in China" was originally created and published by Ship Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
