On April 14, CJ Bio America reported to the DNR that a fertilizer byproduct leak from their plant had entered a stormwater channel. Staff at CJ Bio America told the DNR that the leak had been contained, but a breach in the berm of the stormwater channel was later discovered, the DNR said. DNR staff on-site found that the fertilizer byproduct had entered the South Branch of Lizard Creek and observed the byproduct several miles downstream.
According to a DNR fish kill report, the leak not only impacted the South Branch of Lizard Creek, but also reached Lizard Creek. The report states the fish kill spanned over 15 miles and resulted in an estimated 71,933 fish killed. The majority of the fish killed were minnows, shiners, dace, and chub, but other species like small mouth bass and suckers were impacted.
