2025 starts strong for development in Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The City of Sioux Falls ended 2024 by surpassing over a billion dollars in construction valuations for the fourth year in a row. And even though we're only one quarter into 2025, it looks as though the City might continue that trend. 'Last year we were at about $160 million after the first quarter and we're ending this quarter at $229 million so that's quite a significant bump from last year,' Chief Building Official Neil King said. King says the big growth is coming from the commercial side with high-dollar projects like CJ Foods and Silencer Central. There's also the big addition at the Avera Campus that's coming in at over $31 million. Woman beaten and robbed near Sunshine Foods 'Kind of an odd thing for this quarter is commercial additions and remodels are, those have taken a significant jump in the past,' King said. 'They're actually leading and usually they're behind the new commercial and new construction but they're actually leading in the quarter one, so that's kind of an anomaly there.' As for the residential side of development, those numbers are down but King says it's common to see that when commercial projects are up. 'And it is the winter. Nobody likes building a house in the winter,' King said. 'People start getting excited in the Spring after the Parade of Homes and the Home Show. So I definitely expect the residential to jump up in the summer and the Fall is usually where we see a big jump for residential too.' King believes the city will easily have another billion-dollar year. 'It's exciting, you know, because it just shows we're still the Midwest and Sioux Falls,' King said. 'We're a good community, we work with people, people want to come here and invest in the city of Sioux Falls. It's exciting. We're going to keep growing, I think.' King says there are currently 821 single family homes under construction and over 2 thousand apartment units. Another big commercial project is the new building for the Sioux Falls City and Light Division, which is expected to break ground this Spring.
