2025 starts strong for development in Sioux Falls

Yahoo08-04-2025

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The City of Sioux Falls ended 2024 by surpassing over a billion dollars in construction valuations for the fourth year in a row. And even though we're only one quarter into 2025, it looks as though the City might continue that trend.
'Last year we were at about $160 million after the first quarter and we're ending this quarter at $229 million so that's quite a significant bump from last year,' Chief Building Official Neil King said.
King says the big growth is coming from the commercial side with high-dollar projects like CJ Foods and Silencer Central. There's also the big addition at the Avera Campus that's coming in at over $31 million.

'Kind of an odd thing for this quarter is commercial additions and remodels are, those have taken a significant jump in the past,' King said. 'They're actually leading and usually they're behind the new commercial and new construction but they're actually leading in the quarter one, so that's kind of an anomaly there.'
As for the residential side of development, those numbers are down but King says it's common to see that when commercial projects are up.
'And it is the winter. Nobody likes building a house in the winter,' King said. 'People start getting excited in the Spring after the Parade of Homes and the Home Show. So I definitely expect the residential to jump up in the summer and the Fall is usually where we see a big jump for residential too.'
King believes the city will easily have another billion-dollar year.
'It's exciting, you know, because it just shows we're still the Midwest and Sioux Falls,' King said. 'We're a good community, we work with people, people want to come here and invest in the city of Sioux Falls. It's exciting. We're going to keep growing, I think.'
King says there are currently 821 single family homes under construction and over 2 thousand apartment units.
Another big commercial project is the new building for the Sioux Falls City and Light Division, which is expected to break ground this Spring.

FDOT officials hold ground breaking for DuPont Bridge replacement project, talk about the proposed state budget

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Florida Department of Transportation officials made a visit to Bay County on Friday to discuss the future of transportation in the Panhandle. Transportation officials joined local leaders at the DuPont Bridge to celebrate the groundbreaking of the DuPont Bridge replacement project. It is a $350 million project that will include 4 lanes of traffic while adding new sidewalks, bicycle lanes, multi-use paths, and more. It is set to be completed by mid-2030. The current bridge may not have any major issues, but it's reaching the age when things could go wrong. 'We always do maintenance and preservation before we do any new capacity. We spare no expense with our bridges. They're very important to us, and we have a very robust bridge replacement program. It's that strategic moment in time for the DuPont Bridge where it's time to replace it. And I think it's an added benefit with the Tyndall Air Force Base rebuild that we use the opportunity to add that additional capacity to U.S. 98,' FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue said. Bay Building Industries Association begins 46th annual Parade of Homes Tyndall officials say that capacity is needed. Currently, about 3500 service members travel on and off the base daily. 'The bridge really fits into that nicely as we open up new facilities, open up new missions, welcome more people to the base. That bridge is really just going to help facilitate our growth.' Tyndall Commander Col. Chris Bergtholdt said. State officials also attended the Bay County Chamber of Commerce First Friday meeting, where they discussed the future of FDOT and how they have invested more than $382 million in bridge maintenance projects, like the DuPont project, in the past year. They say a lot of their success is due to the fact that they receive more than 70% of their funding from the state. 'There's a whole lot less restrictions with state money. Federal money comes with a lot of caveats. Anything that runs through the U.S. Treasury usually takes a long time to get moving. So we're very lucky when funds are allocated through the state. The DOT has a plan of work. They can go to work immediately. They have lots of projects on the shelves that are shovel-ready. So when we allocate that money, they can go to work right away,' State Representative Griff Griffitts said. State lawmakers are expected to vote on next year's budget by June 16th. The proposed plan will include nearly $15 billion for FDOT. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Bay Building Industries Association begins 46th annual Parade of Homes

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Bay Building Industries Association or BBIA's 'Parade of Homes' begins on Friday. Builders can enter one of their homes into the showcase to display their work. Coastal Classic Homes was selected to build the 'Scholarship Home' this year. This means builders donate their time to build the home at no cost. BBIA's vendors then donate materials to help lower the cost of the home, which allows them to raise more money for the scholarship. Over the past 9 years, the Bay Builders Industries Association has given away $187,000 in scholarships to 150 students. It supports the next generation of students entering the construction industry. 'I wanted to be a part of this because it gives back to the community. It supports the students in trying to enter the workforce and into the construction industry. And it's just to be able to serve, give back, and work with the association. It's always been always been an honor,' Coastal Classic Homes President Brian Knox said. It took four and a half months for them to build the 4-bed, 2-bath modern home. They cut the ribbon on Wednesday, and the home is already under contract for someone to move in. The scholarship home is one of 28 stops in this year's parade. There's an incentive for those who stop at all of them. 'We do offer what's called our parade passport. If a person goes to every stop, you can get a specific sticker, each one of the homes or the stops that you go to at the end of the parade, you turn that into Mid-South Lumber, and they're offering two cash prizes of $500. So you would be entered into a possibility to win one of those $500 cash prizes,' Bay Building Industries Association's President Curt Hartog said. The Parade of Homes will continue this weekend. They have homes from Cape San Blas to Panama City Beach. You can find that list of homes Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. National Donut Day glazes KELOLAND

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — While National Donut Day is a nationwide holiday, local businesses are getting a taste of it in Sioux Falls. 'It's kind of like the Super Bowl for donut shops. We definitely look forward to it every year,' said Ben Duenwald, Owner of Flyboy Donuts. South Dakota's fall pheasant outlook is 'very positive' Yonutz Donuts and Ice Cream opened in Sioux Falls last month, just in time for the occasion. The franchise has gained popularity due to its signature 'Smashed Donut' which combines a warm pressed donut with ice cream filling. At 3 p.m. Friday, the first 50 customers at Yonutz will get a free big donut, and then at 7 p.m., the first 50 people can get a free simply smashed donut. But the celebration is more than just an excuse to eat donuts. The day originates back to World War I when female Salvation Army volunteers would serve soldiers on the front lines. 'They could treat the troops in the trenches quickly by giving them something homemade,' Duenwald said. 'A ring donut is easy to cook because it's a lot of surface area. That's why there's a hole in it on it.' Duenwald says Friday's donut holiday is the biggest day for them. On Friday morning they made over 20,000 donuts in preparation, and they continue to prepare them throughout the day. Flyboy Donuts now has five locations throughout Sioux Falls and Duenwald says they've had thousands of people throughout all their locations. 'I've realized that donuts are more of the American fabric than even the hot dog or the apple pie, in my opinion,' said Duenwald. 'Everybody has a memory, a nostalgic memory with donuts or the donut shop they might have grown up with.' Other donut shops and bakeries in Sioux Falls include Mr. Donuts, Queen City Bakery and CNC Food Factory. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
