Samruddhi's defining feat is India's widest 8-km twin tunnel through the Ghats
An important element of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, whose final stretch was formally inaugurated on Thursday, is an 8-kilometre-long twin tunnel, the widest and fourth longest road tunnel in India, constructed by boring through tonnes of solid rock in the Western Ghats. Commuters currently using the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway must navigate the winding roads of Kasara Ghat. The stretch from Kasara to Igatpuri, covering 19 km, typically takes around 30 minutes, with vehicles climbing steep slopes through sharp bends. A Dream Turns into Reality… CM Devendra Fadnavis enjoyed a drive on the 'Hinduhrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg' along with DCM Eknath Shinde and DCM Ajit Pawar. This visionary project, and brainchild of CM Devendra Fadnavis himself, stands as a… — CMO Maharashtra (@CMOMaharashtra) June 5, 2025 The new twin tunnels, however, eliminates this strenuous journey. This twin-tube road tunnel, 8 kilometres in length and 17.61 metres in width, is the widest road tunnel in the country and the fourth longest by length. It reaches a height of 9.12 metres and allows traffic to bypass the steep Kasara Ghat, reducing travel time between Kasara and Igatpuri to just eight minutes. According to MSRDC officials, the tunnel was constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), which involved excavation through solid rock. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns between March 2020 and May 2021, the tunnelling work was completed within two years in October 2023. Along with the tunnel, 17 valley type that span 10.56 km, 21.12 km for both lanes, were also built. The longest among them is 2.28 km, which is located just after the Igatpuri tunnel ends towards the Mumbai side. To make these viaducts, engineers needed to construct piers up to 84 metres high, all this with the persistent challenges of hard rock formations in the valley and adverse weather conditions. The construction in narrow and windy valleys under monsoon conditions added safety issues for workmen, which was an additional responsibility for the MSRDC and other stakeholders. 'Excavations 40 metres deep were needed in many places and the high wind velocities made working on higher levels extremely risky. But by exacting engineering and severe safety guidelines, the constructions were finished on time,' a senior MSRDC official told The Indian Express. K Mallikharjuna Rao, business unit head, Hydro and Underground at Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, who carried out the work on the tunnel and viaduct for package 14 of the greenfield expressway said, 'We faced unprecedented rainfall that took a toll on our tunnel construction as well as impeded our efforts at Viaduct-II. Due to heavy showers and dense fog, visibility remained an issue. However, we used the best safety practices to enable a safe work environment.' Apart from the engineering marvel, the last phase has three new interchanges at Igatpuri, Khutghar and Amane facilitating regional connectivity for passenger as well as freight traffic. The opening of this section now makes the entire 701 km Samruddhi Mahamarg corridor open for public, putting Nagpur and Mumbai on an eight hour driving distance from each other.

Video Shows Mumbai's Rs 13,000 Crore Coastal Road Tunnel Is ‘Already Cracked'
Last Updated: An individual shared the bad situation of the coastal road tunnel, complaining that the tunnel was cracked and uneven, due to which it's hard to drive smoothly. The newly inaugurated Mumbai Coastal Road, which connects Nariman Point to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, opened to much fanfare. However, it has since drawn criticism from citizens over its condition. Complaints have surfaced about water leakage inside the tunnel and uneven surfaces that make driving difficult—despite the project costing Rs 13,000 crore. Recently, a concerned commuter took to social media to highlight the deteriorating condition of the tunnel. Sharing a video, he pointed out visible cracks and rough patches, questioning the quality of the construction. Tagging relevant authorities, he asked, 'This is Mumbai's brand new Rs 13,000 crore coastal road tunnel. Already cracked, patched and so uneven it's uncomfortable to drive on. This is what 'world-class infrastructure' looks like. Who is to be held accountable?" The post has sparked a fresh wave of concern among citizens, who are now demanding accountability and urgent repairs from civic bodies. This is Mumbai's brand new ₹13,000 crore coastal road cracked, patched, and so uneven it's uncomfortable to drive is what 'world-class infrastructure" looks like? Who is to be held accountable? @CMOMaharashtra @PMOIndia @mybmc @larsentoubro #Mumbai … — Eternal Drift (@drifteternal_) June 3, 2025 After the video went online, many agreed with him and raised concerns about the road's quality. However, some felt he was over-exaggerating the issue. Reacting to the post, a user wrote, 'This part of the Coastal Road Tunnel is 'Intentionally' designed by esteemed babu's and engineers to include Bumps, Surface 'rumbles' and Jerks. To deter rash driving and zero accidents." 'The construction quality of Indian roads is not up to international standards. If you have seen how smooth the roads and flyovers in Dubai are, you will think how what civil checks Indian roads pass. The civil engineers and contractors all should be sacked. It's just corruption," a comment read. An individual stated, 'I used it two times a day, the tunnel surface is uneven, each lane is different. One of the lanes in the north bound is the most uneven. Absolutely a time saver, but brand-new construction should not be uneven. I think it was finished in a hurry to meet opening dates." Another mentioned, 'I drove a few times, there's no discomfort, it's a breeze. Stop complaining." One more added, 'Sorry but I travelled on it last week twice and found the roads smooth, unlike the other roads of the city. No patchwork or leakage was seen." Back in March, when the individual spoke about similar problems with the tunnel, the BMC responded by saying that they had already fixed the water leakages using the proper method. They also mentioned that they regularly check and maintain the tunnel, especially during night hours, to make sure everything stays in good condition. First Published:

Big relief for Mumbai commuters as phase-1 of Metro route-9 (Kashigaon-Dahisar) kicks off with trial run
Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde flags off the trial run and technical inspection of Phase-1 of Mumbai Metro Route-9, connecting Kashigaon to Dahisar (East), Maharashtra. (PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that no one can halt the development momentum of the state, asserting that the Mahayuti government is working at full speed across sectors. Speaking to reporters at Kashigaon—around 20km from Thane—Fadnavis said the Kashigaon-Dahisar metro line , part of the larger Mumbai Metro expansion, is in its final stages of technical testing and will soon be operational. — CMOMaharashtra (@CMOMaharashtra) The line, once opened, is expected to significantly ease congestion on the Western Express Highway and bring much-needed relief to daily commuters. Responding to questions about the ruling coalition, Fadnavis said, 'All three parties are together and we are running the state's development express in a speedy manner. No one can put a speed-breaker in it. If they (opposition) want to give a booster, it is a different thing. There is no room for a speed-breaker here.' Credit: X Calling the metro system the 'best medium' for urban transport, he said the upcoming launch of this phase will add to the metro lines already connecting parts of Mumbai like Andheri. The objective is to create 'seamless connectivity' along the Western Express Highway, from NS Bose Maidan to Bandra, with phased development currently underway. Highlighting a major feature of the project, the CM said, 'The good thing about this project is that for the first time in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), a double-decker bridge is being built. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like [Click Here] - 2025 Top Trending Search - Local network access Esseps Learn More Undo This innovative design will help decongest critical stretches such as Mira Bhayandar.' He further announced future plans, including metro connectivity extending up to Virar, and emphasised the need for better integration across metro lines to provide end-to-end commuting solutions. Commending the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for its role in driving the project, Fadnavis said the government is now aiming to accelerate the pace of construction. 'Henceforth, we will work with extra speed. This year, 50 kilometres and next year, 62 kilometres—we have decided to carry out works in such phases,' he added. Fadnavis reiterated the government's commitment to completing the metro network that began in 2015. 'The major network which we started will be completed by the end of 2027. This is our aim, due to which people in Mumbai and the MMR will be most benefited for travel,' he said. He also confirmed that a bullet train station is coming up near Vadhvan in Palghar, and integration planning for that is in progress. Deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, were present at the event.
