Pope Francis Kept a Close—and Humorous—Bond with His Family
Pope Francis, whose ailing health resulted in a 38-day hospital stay earlier this year, died Monday morning at age 88. 'He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized,' the Vatican camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, said in a statement. Just as he held his faith dearly, so too did Francis value his family. Although Catholic priests aren't allowed to marry nor have children, he is survived by several living relatives. Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires on December 17, 1936. He was the eldest of Mario José Bergoglio and Regina María Sívori's five children. When he was elected pope in 2013, he had one sibling still alive, his sister Maria Elena Bergoglio, who revealed she had once hoped he wouldn't be chosen pope. 'During the previous conclave, I was praying for him not to be elected… because I didn't want my brother to leave,' she told CNN en Español. 'It's a position that was a little selfish.' This time, she added, 'I prayed that the Holy Spirit would intervene and not listen to me. And it didn't listen to me… It did what it wanted.' After he was elected, Francis told Maria to tell the rest of their family. 'He said, 'I cannot call everyone. We are a very big family, so please send them my love. Because if I call everyone, it will empty the Vatican coffers,'' Maria revealed. Maria didn't go to Rome for his inauguration. 'My brother asked us to save money and use it for charitable works. I'll do as he says,' she told an Italian newspaper at the time. Maria also shared she was worried about him becoming lonely in the role. 'Let's not leave him alone. Francis is asking the Church to resume its journey, but we the faithful must walk with him.' A few of Pope Francis' relatives, inlcuding Maria's youngest son, Jose Ignacio Bergoglio, have spoken publicly about being related to the Pope. In an interview with the Catholic television network EWTN, Jose revealed Francis maintained a sharp sense of humor with his relatives—even on his first phone call after his election to the papacy. 'So when I asked who I was speaking [with], he said, 'It's Jorge, stupid!' Well, he actually used a different word, so I said, 'OK, OK.' And I passed the phone to my mom,' he said. Jose also revealed Francis referred to Maria by the nickname 'Chubby,' which was used as a form of endearment. Further, one of Francis' nieces, Cristina Bergoglio, is an artist who now lives in Madrid. In 2018, she said of her uncle, 'I do not see him anymore, not because I don't want to, but because I respect his job as a spiritual messenger very much and because I am also very busy with my work.' Maryland Democrat meets with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador
Sen. Chris Van Hollen said he met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man wrongfully deported to El Salvador, Thursday night. 'I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance,' the Maryland Democrat said in a post on X, sharing a photo of the two seated together at a table. 'I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.' Abrego Garcia will remain El Salvador's custody following the meeting, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said in a Thursday night post on X. 'Now that he's been confirmed healthy, he gets the honor of staying in El Salvador's custody,' Bukele said. The Salvadoran president posted several photos earlier of Van Hollen shaking hands with Abrego Garcia and the two seated alongside a third man. In a swipe at Democrats critical of Abrego Garcia's incarceration in El Salvador's maximum-security prison, CECOT, he wrote: 'Kilmar Abrego Garcia, miraculously risen from the 'death camps' & 'torture', now sipping margaritas with Sen. Van Hollen in the tropical paradise of El Salvador!' CNN has reached out to Van Hollen and Bukele's offices for more information. The senator declined to provide additional details to CNN en Español about the meeting as he departed a hotel in the capital San Salvador Thursday night, adding that a full readout would be given Friday. The US lawmaker traveled to the Central American nation on Wednesday in a push for the man's release. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national and Maryland resident, was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March, and in the weeks since, his case has become a flashpoint in the fight over the Trump administration's hardline deportation push. Abrego Garcia's wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, celebrated the meeting on Thursday night. 'My children and my prayers have been answered. The efforts of my family and community in fighting for justice are beng heard, because I now know that my husband is alive. God is listening, and the community is standing strong,' she said in a statement. Thursday night's meeting came Van Hollen after earlier in the day said he was denied entry to CECOT when he tried to check on Abrego Garcia's 'health and wellbeing.' He previously told reporters in San Salvador that he had been 'stopped by soldiers at a checkpoint about three kilometers' from the notorious CECOT prison, where he had driven with Chris Newman, a lawyer for Abrego Garcia's wife and mother. Van Hollen said that denying Abrego Garcia access to his lawyers 'is a violation of international law.' 'El Salvador is a party to the international covenant on civil and political rights. El Salvador has signed and ratified that covenant. And that covenant says, and I quote, 'A detained or imprisoned person shall be entitled to communicate and consult with his legal counsel,'' he said. Van Hollen's attempt to enter CECOT came a day after El Salvador's vice president denied him access following an in-person meeting. Salvadoran authorities have not formally charged Abrego Garcia, and are not bound by a strict timeline to do so, according to a high-level source close to Bukele, under the country's ongoing state of exception, which suspends certain constitutional rights. While Abrego Garcia had not been legally in the US prior to his deportation, a 2019 court order said he could not be returned to El Salvador and the Trump administration admitted in court documents he was deported there due to a clerical error. In recent days, however, Trump administration officials have denied that he was mistakenly deported. US officials have alleged he is a member of the MS-13 gang, which the administration has designated as a foreign terrorist organization – a claim his attorneys dispute and at least one federal judge has voiced skepticism toward. Van Hollen on Thursday again accused the US government of violating Abrego Garcia's right to due process and emphasized that was his reason for traveling to El Salvador. 'I am not here to vouch for any particular set of facts or claims, but I am here to vouch for the judicial system in the United States, which guarantees individuals the right to due process,' he said. Other Democratic delegations, he said, are 'in the works now,' and while a Republican congressional delegation had recently been allowed to visit CECOT, Van Hollen said: 'They did not ask to meet with Kilmar. That was not part of their mission.' Van Hollen said he also met with the US Embassy team during his visit, as well as representatives from DHS, FBI, and DEA to discuss joint efforts between the United States and El Salvador to 'crack down on transnational gangs like MS-13.' Friend of Liam Payne who was with singer before his death says loved ones ‘tried really hard to help' him with his sobriety
Rogelio 'Roger' Nores, a close friend of Liam Payne who was one of the last people to see the former One Direction singer alive, believes that Payne's death was the result of an 'extremely unfortunate' series of events. Payne fell to his death from the third floor of a hotel he was staying at in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October, local police told CNN at the time. He was 31. Five people were charged in connection with Payne's death in January, according to local prosecutors. Nores was one of those individuals, but his charges and those of two others have since been dismissed. A hotel employee and a local waiter were detained on charges related to supplying Payne with cocaine during his stay at the hotel. Nores told CNN en Español's Cecilia Dominguez in an interview Tuesday that when he left Payne around an hour before his fall, 'he was doing ok, he was being Liam.' Nores never could have imagined that Payne would've died that day. 'It was very hard to see it coming,' he said. Nores and Payne had traveled to Buenos Aires together for what he described as a personal trip and so Payne could see his former band mate Niall Horan's concert. 'He was just a guy who enjoyed life and he liked traveling to places and seeing people and honestly, he was happy. It's not like he was sad or depressed,' Nores said. 'What happened was extremely unfortunate.' The two, along with Payne's girlfriend Kate Cassidy, spent time together having fun and doing 'normal' activities like bowling and seeing movies, Nores said. Payne 'had stayed sober' during the trip, according to Nores. Days before Payne fell, Cassidy left Buenos Aires to return home. Prior to Payne's death, someone provided him with drugs, Nores said. It was later determined that the singer had alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in his system before his death, according to Argentinian prosecutors. 'I don't think the drugs killed him,' Nores said. 'I think this was really unfortunate and a proper accident.' Nores and Payne met in 2020 and quickly developed a close friendship. Now, he says he is focused on moving forward in grieving Payne, who he described as 'one of the best friends I ever had in my life.' An investigation into Payne's death was launched in October. Nores, along with the manager of the hotel where the incident occurred and the head of reception, were dismissed of charges after they were investigated for negligent homicide, according to court documents reviewed by CNN en Español. The hotel employee and local waiter who remain detained could face up to 15 years in prison, according to court documents. The local waiter's attorney said in December that his client was not guilty and that they'd be appealing the charge, according to the New York Times. Payne spoke openly about his struggles with substance abuse and his mental health. The singer marked six months of sobriety in the summer of 2023 after completing treatment in a US facility. He was gearing up to kick off a new South American tour in September of that year but postponed the scheduled dates after suffering a kidney infection. 'He was smart enough to surround himself by a really healthy environment, and the family and the people around him, they tried their best,' Nores said. 'They tried really hard to help but at the end of the day, this was Liam's decision.' Prior to his death, Payne had also already filmed his turn on Netflix's 'Building the Band,' according to the Hollywood Reporter, a singing competition show on which he served as a judge alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Kelly Rowland. While the streamer has not yet announced a release date for the upcoming season of the show, Netflix is reportedly planning to move forward with streaming it. Payne's death shocked the music industry and his millions of fans around the world, sparking a global outpouring of grief for the singer who brought joy to many through his music. He rocketed to global stardom as part of One Direction, one of Britain's biggest boybands, which was created on the British X Factor in 2010. The group announced an 'indefinite hiatus' in 2016. Payne was laid to rest during a funeral in England which his former bandmates – Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Horan and Louis Tomlinson – attended.
