Egypt, Canada strengthen environmental cooperation with focus on green transition and climate action

File- Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad - press photo CAIRO – 16 May 2025: Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad held a meeting with Canadian Ambassador to Egypt Louis Dumas and his accompanying delegation to discuss ongoing and future cooperation on environmental issues at both national and multilateral levels. The meeting was attended by Ambassador Raouf Saad, Advisor to the Minister on Multilateral Agreements, and Soha Taher, Head of the Central Administration for International Cooperation and Climate Change. Fouad praised the long-standing and distinguished environmental partnership between Egypt and Canada, highlighting Canada's early support in building Egypt's environmental capabilities, particularly in data management through the development of an environmental information system, which played a crucial role in understanding and addressing complex environmental challenges. The discussions covered collaborative efforts at the multilateral level, particularly during the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) held in Canada, where both countries worked together to establish a global biodiversity framework. The two sides praised the joint cooperation during the COP27 Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh and COP28 in Dubai, where Egypt and Canada jointly led consultations on climate finance, resulting in an agreement to scale up climate funding. The minister presented Egypt's vision for green transformation, which centers on raising ambition, encouraging green investment, and engaging the private sector. She emphasized Egypt's aspiration to become a regional hub for green hydrogen and renewable energy, leveraging its significant natural capital and reaffirmed the state's commitment to inclusive green transition, supported by the government, civil society, and local communities alike. She also referenced presidential directives issued since 2018 to ensure active youth and women participation in environmental efforts, beyond mere awareness. Notable examples include small-scale waste management projects and the conservation of natural reserves, she said. The 'Eco Egypt' campaign was cited as a successful initiative promoting eco-tourism through youth and entrepreneur engagement. The minister elaborated on Egypt's policy approach to tackling plastic pollution, a pressing global and national challenge. She mentioned the Cabinet's approval of extended producer responsibility regulations for plastic bags under the Waste Management Law, alongside changes in production standards and the introduction of alternatives. A public awareness campaign on reducing single-use plastics is being prepared, in line with World Environment Day's theme of reducing plastic pollution, she said. The role of education in addressing environmental challenges was also a key topic. Fouad stressed the importance of integrating global environmental issues such as biodiversity and climate change into the national education system. Egypt has already incorporated these topics into school curricula and welcomed Canadian interest in developing technical education that includes environmental and sustainability components, she said. The Canadian ambassador commended the historical depth of Egyptian-Canadian relations and expressed Canada's intention to support Egypt's green transition. He highlighted areas of potential cooperation, including technical education aligned with environmental sustainability, smart agriculture, and research partnerships aimed at addressing environmental priorities.

OPEN// FM reaffirms Egypt's commitment to supporting peace, stability worldwide

CAIRO, May 12 (MENA} - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Monday Egypt's full commitment to supporting peace and stability at both the regional and international levels through a responsible diplomatic approach based on de-escalation, dialogue, and peaceful resolutions to conflicts. This came during the Foreign Minister's participation, alongside Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, in the opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the "Gamal Abdel Nasser Fellowship for International Leadership." The program is held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, under the theme: 'Egypt and the United Nations: 80 Years of Representing the Global South's Causes,' with the attendance of 150 participants representing 80 countries. Minister Abdelatty welcomed the youth from the Global South participating in the fellowship, stressing that Egypt is always proud to host initiatives that enhance the role of youth and strengthen bridges of cooperation and mutual understanding between nations. He outlined the fundamental principles underpinning Egypt's foreign policy, noting that it stems from a balanced vision and clear strategy established by President Sisi since 2014. The minister highlighted Egypt's firm belief in the importance of a multilateral system as the foundation of a fair and balanced international order. He emphasized the indispensable role of the United Nations as a platform that reflects the collective will of the international community, highlighting Egypt's active participation in UN institutions. He reiterated Egypt's full commitment to working towards reforming the international system, including the structure of the global financial system and the UN Security Council. He noted that these institutions, in their current form, do not fully reflect the interests of the Global South or fairly address the aspirations of its people for justice and balanced representation. In a related context, Minister Abdelatty addressed the priorities of Egypt's foreign policy in the field of sustainable development, pointing out that 'Egypt Vision 2030' is a comprehensive strategic framework based on principles of social justice and empowerment, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He affirmed Egypt's leading role in climate change issues, especially after hosting the COP27 Climate Summit, and the subsequent initiatives aimed at supporting green transition and financing climate projects in developing countries, particularly in Africa. The Minister also highlighted the importance of digital transformation and artificial intelligence as key drivers of future development, stressing that Egypt continues to utilize these tools in line with its national interests and development goals. Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's stance on key regional issues, noting that the region is witnessing alarming developments, especially as the foundational principles of the international system are increasingly being questioned. He addressed Israel's continued violations of the core principles of international law and international humanitarian law, as well as its repeated breaches of the UN Charter. He reiterated Egypt's condemnation of using starvation as a weapon of collective punishment against the Palestinian people, warning that such actions create an extremely dangerous international environment that threatens global peace and stability, and requires urgent and serious international action to restore respect for the rule of law and immediately halt these violations. He called for greater solidarity among countries of the Global South in the face of escalating challenges that threaten international peace and security. He emphasized that achieving a fairer and more stable global system begins with a full commitment to the principles of international law and the UN Charter, and a rejection of practices that impose will through force or undermine national sovereignty. The foreign minister said that the current moment requires the Global South to unite in defense of shared rights and interests, and to build a global order that respects national sovereignty and is based on justice, equality, and cooperation.
