Skin that is so smooth, luminous and evenly toned it looks like a clear piece of glass almost sounds far-fetched. But that's exactly what the viral glass skin trend promises. Glass skin in rooted in Korean beauty – or K-beauty – practices, where the country's particular step-by-step skincare regimen leaves behind a dewy and almost reflective complexion on the skin. Erica Choi, licensed aesthetician and founder of skin-care brand Superegg, tells Vogue, 'Originating from Korea's beauty culture, where the trend emphasizes hydration, radiance, and overall skin health, this aligns with the global shift towards skin care as a vital aspect of self-care and wellness. 'Overall, the glass-skin trend reflects a broader desire for natural-looking beauty and consumer practices prioritizing effortless beauty routines and a 'high-maintenance to be low-maintenance' mindset.' So, how do you get this look? One of the main ingredients to look out for in your skincare routine is snail mucin, director of Boutique International Yumna Ismail tells TRUELOVE at the launch of Korean skincare brand COSRX in Johannesburg. 'So, definitely the snail range. I think when COSRX started many years ago, that was basically what the ideal goal was, was glass skin because everyone would go to Korea and ask people, 'Why do you guys have such perfect skin?' And think just the snail range on the whole. Tip Always wait at least five seconds in between applying each step of your skincare routine to ensure the products soak into the skin effectively. 'And also, we see now that the other brands are sort of starting to follow the same thing, bringing in that snail ingredient into products. All you need is a 6-step skincare routine The glass skin effect is all about intense and consistent hydration. Step 1: Cleanser Double cleansing with oil and water-based cleansers will remove impurities like sebum, makeup, sweat and pollutants. Step 2: Toner Toners are the first step in skin-barrier repair, with Erica explaining to Vogue that they also 'balance the skin's pH levels, hydrate, and prepare the skin to absorb serums and moisturizers better.' Step 3: Essence Essences are water-based skincare products that have high concentrations of active ingredients to protect the skin. An essence helps the skin better absorb serums and moisturisers, making them a must-have for the glass skin effect. 'An essence is a much lighter consistency. It's sort of prepping your skin for a serum. So, you definitely do the product that has the least ingredients and lighter in terms of texture. And then you'd move on to a serum,' Yumna advises. Step 4: Serum Serums give an intense dose of one main or a combination of ingredients like vitamins C, E and D, hyaluronic acid and nature's retinol, bakuchiol, designed to sink into the skin quickly. Step 5: Moisturiser Look for day creams that not only gives your skin long-lasting hydration, but also protection from the environment and don't be afraid to use oils like jojoba, almon, primrose or argan for that glassy look. Step 6: SPF Finish off your skincare routine with a good sunscreen that contains a high enough level of SPF to help protect the skin from harsh UV rays and add an extra level of hydration.
