‘Global unity through dialogue'
BEIJING: Dialogue and cooperation are crucial tools to address common challenges such as poverty, climate change and inequality in a world grappling with economic uncertainty and tensions, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. Calling for global unity, the MCA president said the spirit of exchange and mutual learning is facing new challenges amid rising protectionism, ideological divides and a worrying tendency towards isolationism. 'Some are tempted to see the diversity of civilisations not as a source of strength, but as a source of conflict. This is a dangerous path,' he said. Dr Wee was speaking at the forum on 'Inter-Civilisation Exchanges and Mutual Learning: Global Development and Prosperity,' part of the Ministerial Meeting of the Global Civilisations Dialogue held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse here yesterday. He emphasised that civilisation should not be a contest of dominance, but a journey of mutual learning. 'It is a journey of learning, where we share experiences, exchange knowledge and draw wisdom from one another to solve common challenges, be it poverty, climate change or global inequality,' he said. Also present was MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon. The forum was opened by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences vice-president Li Xuesong, followed by a keynote address from Hu Heping, executive deputy head of the CPC Central Committee's Publicity Department, and a speech from Andrey Chorbanov, chairman of Bulgaria's Education and Science Committee. Other speakers included Xinhua News Agency president Fu Hua, Bangladesh Cultural Affairs Ministry adviser Mostofa Farooki and CPC Central Committee Party School vice-president Li Wentang. Former Dewan Negara president and Star Media Group Bhd chairman Tan Sri Wong Foon Meng (pic) also participated, speaking at a separate forum. Dr Wee is on an official visit to China at the invitation of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee's Contemporary World Magazine. He is leading a delegation of 23 media representatives from 12 Asian and African countries under the theme 'Media Empowerment and Shared Prosperity'. The delegation is visiting key sites and companies to gain deeper insight into the historical foundations of Chinese civilisation as well as the major achievements and global opportunities arising from China's path to modernisation. Dr Wee noted that Malaysia, as a nation at the crossroads of Asia, embodies the value of cultural convergence, where diverse cultures, beliefs and ideas have come together to produce a rich civilisational tapestry. 'Our future lies not in turning inward but in engaging with the world,' he said. He highlighted Malaysia's commitment to modernisation through learning and adaptation, pointing to the Belt and Road Initiative as a successful example of international cooperation. 'Malaysia and China have shown the world how such collaboration can work,' he said. Dr Wee added that MCA is proud to have fostered these ties through the Belt and Road Centre, Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research, inter-party exchanges and academic cooperation via Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. Dr Wee also expressed support for China's Global Civilisation Initiative, which promotes mutual respect and dialogue among nations. 'No civilisation, no matter how advanced, holds all the answers. But through humility and openness, we can find solutions that benefit humanity as a whole. 'We must choose dialogue over division, cooperation over confrontation, and mutual learning over suspicion,' he said, adding that the wisdom of the past shows that diversity is humanity's greatest strength. Meanwhile, in a parallel session, Wong addressed the topic 'Inter-Civilisation Exchanges and Mutual Learning: Cultural Inheritance and Innovation,' highlighting the need for cultures to evolve while staying rooted in their essence. He cited examples such as Malaysia's batik and China's ink painting, which are flourishing in the digital age. 'In Malaysia, traditional batik motifs are being revitalised through digital fashion platforms, while in China, centuries-old ink painting techniques have found new life through immersive digital exhibitions. 'These expressions give rich meaning to our cultural inheritance. Yet, as we evolve, so must our cultures. Innovation does not mean turning away from tradition,' he said. Highlighting the media's role, Wong said, 'The media plays a critical role in cultural inheritance and innovation. We are not just storytellers, we are connectors.' He added that Star Media Group has been using its platform to encourage dialogue and unity in Malaysia's diverse society. 'We live in a time of unprecedented challenges, geopolitical tensions, technological disruption and environmental crisis. 'In such times, dialogue among civilisations is not merely valuable; it is essential,' he said. He praised the Global Civilisation Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping as a timely framework for celebrating diversity and shared values. 'Peace, equality, justice and common prosperity are aspirations for all of humanity. 'Let us work together, not only to preserve our past but to leverage its essence to drive innovation and share its gifts with the world,' Wong said.

Wang Yi's Europe tour sets tone for EU-China summit: Trade, Ukraine tensions in focus
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was in Europe to set the tone for the upcoming EU-China Summit, but the differences are such between the two sides that the summit could become meaningless and get condensed to a one-day affair. read more On July 2, 2025 local time, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen met with Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brussels. (Photo: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was in Europe this week to lay the groundwork for the upcoming EU-China Summit, but the harsh realities that he saw could not just make the summit meaningless but see it condensed to a one-day affair. Even as China has pitched itself as a counterweight to the United States in terms of trade and international dealings, the reality is not lost on anyone in Europe that China has a massive trade surplus with the European Union (EU) and China is Russia's ally in the war on Ukraine and aggression against Europe. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the shadow war on the continent has plunged Europe in the worst security crisis since the World War II. Russia is able to sustain its war and the broader economy because of Chinese economic assistance. China is not just buying Russian energy exports but is also providing Russia everything from weapons, dual-use goods, machinery, and weapons supplies to consumer goods. If that was not enough of a proof that China was on the other side of the Europe-Russia conflict, Wang told EU foreign minister Kaja Kallas last week that China did not want to see Russia lose in the war with Ukraine, according to South China Morning Post. Wang meets European leaders but tensions remain In his tour of Europe, Wang met EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, Kallas, and ministers in France and Germany, and even as he pitched China as a credible partner, little was achieved to ease longstanding tensions between the two sides. Wang stressed before his European counterparts that China and Europe do not have any fundamental conflicts of interest, but instead share extensive common economic and political interests, according to Business Times. French newspaper Le Monde reported that Wang made 'no progress on a host of disputes'. The newspaper dubbed the warming of EU-China relations as 'impossible' as the two sides spar over trade imbalance, Ukraine war, cybersecurity, and the West Asia conflict. The situation is such that the two-day EU-China Summit starting July 24 could be reduced to one day. Last year, the EU slapped tariffs of up to 35 per cent on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and China retaliated with inquiries into Europe's pork, dairy, and brandy sectors. The EU is also looking forward to securing an arrangement for the supply of rare earths. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Despite such a conflict, China would try to use its rare earths' monopoly as a trump card just like it used it in the trade conflict with the United States. China controls around 70 per cent of rare earths' reserves and around 90 per cent of rare earths' production. Rare earths are used in nearly everything required in modern life, ranging from household electronics to cars and missiles and fighter planes. Moreover, there is no one voice in the EU about China. While some countries are more business-minded, like France, others are more hawkish on

Global Times: Readers' Reflections: China, led by the CPC, always moves forward, creating more opportunities for the world
07/02/2025, Beijing, China // KISS PR Brand Story PressWire // July 1, 2025, marks the 104th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Looking back on more than a century of striving, it is under the Party's strong leadership that the Chinese people have continuously turned the 'impossible' into the 'possible.' The historic transformation of the Chinese nation - from standing up, to growing prosperous and becoming strong - has been fundamentally driven by the leadership of the CPC. The book series of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China contains multiple important speeches on upholding and strengthening the Party's leadership. In the article 'Maximize the Institutional Strength of CPC Leadership' included in Volume III of the book series, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, emphasized that governing a large country with more than 1.3 billion people, the Party must improve its leadership systems and mechanisms, give full play to the great strength of leadership by the Party, and shoulder the major responsibilities of carrying out our great struggle, developing our great project, advancing our great cause, and realizing our great dream. Only in this way can we ensure national reunification, uniform laws and policies and consistent market management, achieve economic development, clean political administration, cultural prosperity, social justice and healthy ecosystems, and smoothly advance the causes of Chinese socialism in the new era. In Volume IV, Xi further stressed in the article titled 'Speech at the Ceremony Marking the Centenary of the Communist Party of China' that the leadership of the Party is the defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics and constitutes the greatest strength of this system. It is the foundation and lifeblood of the Party and the country, and the crux upon which the interests and wellbeing of all Chinese people depend. Looking ahead, only by upholding and strengthening the Party's overall leadership can we fully build a great modern socialist country in all respects as scheduled and achieve the grand goal of national rejuvenation. In the seventh installment of the special series 'Decoding the Book of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China,' the Global Times, along with People's Daily Overseas Edition, focuses on the theme: 'Upholding CPC's overall leadership is China's greatest political advantage.' We continue to invite Chinese and foreign scholars, translators of Xi's works, practitioners with firsthand experience, and international readers to explore the CPC's institutional strengths and real-world results in theoretical innovation, political development, organizational structure and its people-centered approach - and to collectively answer the question of our times: 'Why is the CPC successful?' In the seventh article of the 'Readers' Reflections' column, Global Times (GT) reporters Ma Jingjing and Qi Xijia talked to Jack Perry Junior (Perry), chairman of the 48 Group Club to listen to his family's story of connections with the CPC in the span over 70 years. For over 70 years, three generations of the Perry family have been engaged in in-depth interactions with China and the CPC, and witnessed the miracle of China's development. My grandfather (Jack Perry Senior)'s first interaction with the Communist Party of China (CPC) was a meeting with representatives of the then premier Zhou Enlai. They hoped that my grandfather would help reopen the China-British and China-Europe business and trade channels. In July 1953, my grandfather led a group of industrial and business leaders on a groundbreaking journey to China. They received a warm welcome in Beijing, where they inked a trade agreement worth 30 million pounds ($40.37 million) with the Chinese government, which was the first trade deal between a Western business community and the People's Republic of China. The visit defies the blockade imposed by the West on the newly founded People's Republic of China and is well known as the 'Icebreaking Mission' between China and Britain. After that, my grandfather decided to focus his business on developing trade with China. He firmly believed that the new China led by the CPC would once again become a pillar of global trade. The Perry family has close connections with China under the leadership of the CPC and witnessed those most profound reforms - from the initial development in the 1950s after the founding of the new China, to the rapid surge of economic growth in the 1980s and 1990s, and then to the economic takeoff in the 21st century. In a congratulatory letter to an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 'Icebreaking Mission' in China-UK trade in July 2023, President Xi Jinping pointed out that 70 years ago, British entrepreneurs represented by Jack Perry, keenly seeing the bright future of New China and the huge potential of China-UK cooperation, broke the ice of ideology with courage, and took the lead in opening up the channel of China-UK trade exchanges. Over the past seven decades, generations of 'icebreakers' have witnessed and actively participated in China's development and reform, and achieved their own development and growth through mutually beneficial cooperation, Xi said. My father, Stephen Perry, met President Xi for three times. In 2018, President Xi presented the China Reform Friendship Medal to my father. Through long-term friendly exchanges with China, the Perry family has deeply felt the strategic foresight demonstrated by the CPC in exploring China's development path. We firmly believe that the wisdom of the CPC in governing the country will continue to inject strong momentum into China's stable development in the long run, create more opportunities for countries around the world, and contribute more Chinese solutions to achieving inclusive global development. New China, led by the CPC, has always been moving forward. The CPC and the Chinese government not only focus on addressing pressing immediate issues in the short term but also possess far-sighted vision - they take a 30-year, 40-year, or even longer-term perspective and formulate long-term goals and development plans based on scientific analysis. This forward-looking thinking enables China to maintain its course across different historical stages. Facts have proven that the CPC and the Chinese government have consistently kept their commitments, following through on their promises with unwavering resolve and exceptional execution. They have led the Chinese people to overcome myriad obstacles and achieve one magnificent goal after another. Such cohesion and execution capacity not only commands admiration but also demonstrates extraordinary strength, serving as a solid foundation for driving national development and progress. For example, China is generally able to effectively meet its domestic demand in areas such as agriculture, commodities, and oil refining - a challenge that would be difficult for any other country. This primarily stems from the CPC's consistent focus on achieving a happy life for the people as its core objective and its unswerving commitment to improving people's livelihoods, and promoting social equity, and harmony. The CPC cares about the feelings and needs of rural residents, ensuring that everyone can achieve success through their own efforts. This people-centered development philosophy has fostered social stability and the people's well-being in China, providing a solid foundation for economic development. President Xi has frequently talked about three key words: high-quality development, new quality productive forces, and high-level opening-up. These reflect China's forward-looking mindset and a development direction that China always maintains. Focusing on 'AI+", a delegation of the 48 Group visited multiple Chinese provinces and cities, including Beijing and East China's Shandong Province recently, in a bid to explore cooperation opportunities in various sectors such as green economy, sci-tech innovations and financial services. The reason we came here is to seize on the development opportunities in China's high-tech field. The CPC and the Chinese government have demonstrated remarkable strategic focus, which ensures the consistency of their policies. Unlike the frequent shifts in Western political leadership and the lack of policy continuity, China has, through a long-term and stable policy environment, created predictable development prospects for global investors. Such a stable environment allows foreign businesses to operate in China with confidence, engage in long-term strategic planning, and make investments. Under the firm leadership of the CPC, China's high-level opening-up not only supports the vigorous growth of foreign enterprises in China but also showcases its remarkable inclusiveness. What impresses me is also China's opening-up stance. Take the various international exhibitions held in China as an example. Even if there are geopolitical differences between China and certain countries, the doors of the exhibitions are always open to all countries and companies, and no participant is rejected. During a meeting with representatives of the international business community in Beijing in March 2025, President Xi noted the twin miracles of rapid economic growth and enduring social stability that China has created over the past seven decades since the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially over the past four decades of reform and opening up. President Xi attributed the miracles to the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China as well as the unity and hard work of the Chinese people, and also to the support and help from the international community, including the contribution of foreign businesses operating in China. Countries around the world and global companies are eager to understand China and share China's market opportunities. In fact, my friends in the business field ask me all the time: 'Jack, what are they doing in China?' I said you should get out there before you miss it, because they're doing a lot. Now the biggest opportunity in the world is to invest in China. China has transformed from traditional manufacturing to advanced equipment manufacturing driven by advanced technology, with cutting-edge technologies such as AI having deeply integrated into this process, injecting strong momentum into the industrial upgrading. Chinese private enterprises are exploring new technologies, striving to improve their strength and technological levels, and continuously moving toward internationalization. They have made significant achievements in various areas, providing abundant cooperation opportunities in the high-tech sectors. We want to work with countries, we want to work with companies, and we want to work with people. And that's what I've always seen with China, under the leadership of the CPC - being inclusive and being one of the leaders in innovation. For more than 70 years, we have always walked shoulder to shoulder with China under the leadership of the CPC. In the future, as the third generation of the Perry family, I will have the honor to continue this mission. July 1 marks the 104th anniversary of the founding of the CPC. To the Chinese people and the CPC, I would like to say thank you! Thank you for trusting a family from London to be your closest overseas partner for over 70 years. It's my humblest and greatest honor that I get to continue this 'icebreaking' spirit in the third generation. My grandfather is " lao Perry,' my father is " xiao Perry,' and I'm " xiaoxiao Perry.' That is truly emotional and I will continue to work hard to keep this friendship going. This story first appeared in Global Times:

Global Times: Scholars' Perspectives: Demonstrating Party's character and strength through innovative development
BEIJING, July 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- July 1, 2025, marks the 104th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC). We continue to invite Chinese and foreign scholars, translators of Xi's works, practitioners with firsthand experience, and international readers to explore the CPC's institutional strengths and real-world results in theoretical innovation, political development, organizational structure and its people-centered approach - and to collectively answer the question of our times: "Why is the CPC successful?" This is the sixth article of the "Scholars' Perspectives" column, which features Xu Bin, director of the Marxist Institutional Theory Research Center of Beijing Normal University, also a professor of the School of Marxism at the university. The leadership of the Party is the defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics and constitutes the greatest strength of this system. Since entering the new era, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, with profound historical insight and a strong sense of mission, has led the CPC to innovate in theoretical development, political construction, and the mass line, shaping a strong and resilient proletarian party. The CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, attaches great importance to the study and adherence to the basic theories of Marxism. For instance, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee has organized multiple collective study sessions, focusing on key theoretical works such as dialectical materialism, historical materialism, Marxist political economy, and the Communist Manifesto. At the same time, classic works by Marx and Engels are widely recommended to Party members and cadres, emphasizing to start from the most fundamental theories of Marxism to accurately understand and grasp its essence. Building on the basis of adhering to the basic positions, viewpoints, and methods of Marxism, the CPC has also continuously advanced theoretical innovation in the new era. Our Party has made many original and fundamental theoretical contributions to Marxism. For example, in the Communist Manifesto, Marx introduced the concept of "world history," pointing out that the development of capitalism broke the boundaries of nations and regions, leading human history to move toward globalization. Building on this foundation, socialism with Chinese characteristics has put forward the significant concept of "building a community of shared future for mankind." This concept emphasizes strengthening exchanges and mutual learning with countries around the world, and jointly promoting the construction of shared human values. This is not only an inheritance of Marx's "world history" theory but also an important development and elevation in contemporary conditions, reflecting our Party's deepening and innovation of Marxism's fundamental theory. Marx consistently emphasized the human standpoint, with its core being the pursuit of the liberation of the global proletariat, that is, the liberation of all humankind. Since its founding, the CPC has always adhered to this fundamental position. However, under different historical conditions and in response to various historical tasks, this position has been continuously enriched and expanded. In the new era, General Secretary Xi has put forward a people-centered philosophy, emphasizing the principle of "putting the people first" and stating that "the country is the people, and the people are the country." These important remarks elevate the Party's commitment to its people to an unprecedented level. This series of people-centered development concepts concretely embodies the Marxist stance on the people. These ideas are deeply rooted in the practice of developing socialism with Chinese characteristics and are implemented throughout the historical process of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. They highlight the CPC's unwavering original aspiration and enduring mission. Throughout the process of reform and opening up, the CPC has consistently upheld that the essence of socialism lies in the liberation and development of social productive forces. In the early stages, the reform policies allowed some people to become prosperous first through legitimate efforts, to spur overall development. This injected strong momentum into China's economic growth. However, as the economy advanced rapidly, a number of deep-rooted issues gradually emerged, such as widening income disparities, corruption, and environmental degradation, which became chronic problems hindering social equity, justice, and sustainable development. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee with Xi Jinping at its core has confronted these challenges head-on. When there were voices in society claiming that "actions would affect stability," the CPC Central Committee, from the perspective of the long-term development of the Party and the people's cause, firmly exercised full and rigorous Party self-governance and a series of deep-seated reforms. With great political courage and historical responsibility, our Party has continuously promoted the fight against corruption, tackled entrenched internal issues within the Party through institutional construction such as the "eight-point decision" and education on ideals and convictions, and gained widespread public support. When it comes to addressing the issue of wealth gap, the CPC faced a "tough nut to crack" that involves institutional mechanism reforms and adjusting vested interests, requiring arduous efforts. Yet our Party has always adhered to a people-centered stance, committed to safeguarding and improving people's livelihoods through development, and has achieved historic progress in poverty alleviation. In regard to ecological civilization, the CPC Central Committee has attached great importance to it, promoting a profound transformation from concepts to actions. What impressed me deeply is the obvious improvement in air quality in Beijing and my hometown Shandong Province around 2016. When I went to Canada in 2016 as a visiting scholar, the winter air in Beijing was filled with a pungent smell, but when I returned in 2017, I clearly felt that there were more blue skies and fresher air. My hometown has actively promoted the "coal-to-gas" project, with the government subsidizing farmers to gradually achieve clean heating. I have personally experienced these changes. These transformations did not materialize overnight, but are the result of our Party's adherence to the people-centered development philosophy and its firm commitment to advancing self-reform and deepening reforms to overcome challenges. The CPC has not only led the country onto the path of prosperity and strength, but also has the courage to address the contradictions and problems in development, ensuring that the fruits of development benefit all the people fairly. China's political party system is a system of CPC-led multiparty cooperation and political consultation, with CPC playing a central role. This is the fundamental characteristic of China's new type of political party system. It is the product of integrating Marxist political party theory with China's reality, and can truly, widely and persistently represent and fulfill the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people. It can pool the consensus of various political parties and personages without party affiliation, effectively avoiding the drawbacks of a single party lacking supervision or the vicious competition of multi-party rotation. It can also gather various opinions and suggestions through institutionalized, procedural and standardized arrangements, promoting scientific and democratic decision-making, and effectively avoiding the shortcomings of some political party systems that lead to social division due to decision-making and governance constrained by partisan, social strata, regional and group interests. I joined the CPC 31 years ago at the age of 26. I was teaching ideological and political education, and history courses, and my job deepened my understanding of CPC's theories and China's education mission, giving rise to my resolve to join the CPC. Over the past 31 years, I witnessed China's great progress made under CPC leadership, and the vitality unleashed in economic development and institutional reform. This has made me deeply feel that the Party is leading us in continuous exploration and construction on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, a path that stirs my passion and is full of hope. Over these 31 years, I have also profoundly realized that the CPC represents the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people, has always been committed to safeguarding and developing people's well-being, and contributing to the development of humanity as a whole. These are the principles I most identify with and admire. View original content: SOURCE Global Times
