Kerala HC rules transgender parents be designated just 'parent' in child's birth certificate

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Monday ordered that the gender details of Kerala's first transgender parents in their child's birth certificate be changed from "mother" and "father" to just "parent" for both partners. While the Pinarayi Vijayan government often says it is the first state government to have come out with a transgender policy, the transgender parents failed to get justice from the CPI-M ruled Kozhikode Corporation when they first approached it to modify their child's certificate, and then, took legal recourse. A bench of Justice Rahman passed the order on the plea by Zahhad, a transman (assigned female at birth but identifying as a man) and Ziya Paval, a transwoman (assigned male at birth but identifying as a woman), who are the first openly transgender couple in Kerala. "This writ petition is disposed of directing the fifth respondent to issue a birth certificate with the modification by removing the columns of names of father and mother and by incorporating the names of the petitioners as parents without referring to their genders," the court ruled. The transgender couple was in the news in February 2023 when Zahad gave birth to their child. The birth certificate of the child registered by the Kozhikode Corporation recorded the mother's name as Zahad (transgender) and the father's name as Ziya (transgender). Zahad and Ziya approached the Corporation to change the details in their child's birth certificate to indicate both of them as just 'parents' rather than mother and father. But the Corporation authorities rejected their request, and the couple then approached the High Court seeking relief. "Since scientifically there's some contradiction in the fact that a male is giving birth to a child, the petitioners requested the authorities to avoid the name of father and mother but simply writing 'parent' to avoid further embarrassment which the third petitioner (child) would have to face during her life time viz. school admission, Adhar Card, PAN Card, Passport and various other documents including job and connected matters," the parents contended. They also pointed out that the denial of such a certificate is a denial of their and their child's fundamental rights. Moreover, the denial of the new certificate goes against the dictum laid down by the Supreme Court in the landmark NALSA case. They further added that various other countries allow couples, especially same sex couples, to choose their title in their child's birth certificate from among 'mother', 'father' and 'parent'.

"Purpose of mission has been accomplished:" All-Party Delegation member Brittas in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 1 (ANI): All-Party Delegation Member and CPI-M MP John Brittas, who is part of the JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha-led delegation visiting Malaysia on Sunday, said that they have successfully conveyed India's message that all countries should unite against terrorism. Brittas, while talking to ANI, said that the delegation has held several meetings and also addressed the Indian community here. 'We have a comprehensive strategic friendship with had a couple of meetings and also addressed the Indian feel that the purpose of the mission has been accomplished. We successfully conveyed the message of India that all the countries have to unite in the fight against terrorism,' Brittas said. While interacting with the Indian diaspora here, he pointed out that Pakistan is a rogue nation, which has now become a military-controlled nation. 'Pakistan has plummeted to a military-controlled nation. Their military leader, Asim Munir, has self-declared himself the Field Marshal. This happens only in a banana republic or a rogue nation,' Brittas said, referring to Munir's comments on two-nation policy and his promotion despite Pakistan's embarrassing failure in the face of Operation Sindoor. Brittas appealed to Malaysia that a country must not stay silent when another faces terror attacks stating that terrorism catches up with those who stay silent. 'A significant distinction between Indian and Pakistan is that we are a secular nation and Pakistan is a theocratic nation... Pakistan doesn't even have a civil administration... That is one message we wanted to convey to all the nations- You shouldn't be neutral or silent when terror inflicts India, because terror always turns around and catches up with those who helped it,' he said. Brittas said that India has a no first use policy, as all Indian Prime Ministers have tried to co-exist with Pakistan. 'India is the one country that has taken a decision that we will never use nuclear weapons as a first resort against any country... We have tried to co-exist with Pakistan. All the Prime Ministers, all the governments of India have tried their level best to extend their hand for friendship towards Pakistan... Our message is that no nation should be neutral or silent on this cardinal aspect of terrorism.' The delegation to Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore is led by JD-U MP Sanjay Kumar Jha. It includes Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), Abhishek Banerjee (Trinamool Congress), Brij Lal (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Salman Khurshid and Mohan Kumar. (ANI)

Security forces engage in encounter with Maoists in Jharkhand's Jhariakela

The security forces engaged in an encounter with members of the banned Maoist organisation CPI (Maoist) at around 12 p.m. on May 30. The encounter occurred in the hilly/forest areas of Vangram Tirilposi under Jhariakela Police Station in Jharkhand, a press release said. During the encounter, seeing the security forces gaining an upper hand, the Maoists fled from the incident spot by taking advantage of the forests and mountains. Explosives and other daily-use items were recovered and seized by the security forces during the search operation. Recently, the Indian forces conducted a major anti-Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur, eliminating 27 Maoists, which included top commander Basavaraju. Basavaraju, the general secretary of CPI (Maoist), has been involved in Maoist activities for the past 40-45 years and has been involved in more than 200 Maoist activities. Meanwhile, Maoist activity in Bastar and many regions of India has 'reduced significantly' as a result of carrying out operations against the banned and 'illegal' CPI-M outfit, a police official said on Wednesday (May 28, 2025). Inspector General (IG) of police, Bastar, P. Sundarraj told ANI, 'As a result of carrying out operations against the banned and illegal CPI-M outfit, Maoist activity in Bastar and many regions of India has reduced significantly... 4 districts of Bastar sub-division, Bijapur, Sukma, Narayanpur, and Kanker were identified as the most affected LWE districts... 6 districts of Chhattisgarh, including Bastar, Dhamtari, and Rajnandgaon, will be specially monitored by us for any kind of resurgence'. The IG stated that most of the districts in Chhattisgarh are seeing a drop in Maoist activity. 'In the country, only 18 districts are Maoist-affected, and 28 districts are included in the list of districts of maximum thrust... District of maximum thrust means that Maoist activity in the district has reduced to a great extent, but strict observations are still required... Most of the districts in Chhattisgarh are seeing a drop in maoist activity...,' he said.
