New chip research centre to open at Central Scientific Instruments Organisation in Chandigarh in 2 years
Chandigarh: In a move to boost India's presence in the global semiconductor market, a new research centre is slated to open at the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) in Chandigarh in two years.
The foundation stone for the "Opto Microelectronic Research Centre," a first-of-its-kind facility in the country, was laid on Tuesday by Dr N Kalaiselvi, director-general, CSIR.
The establishment of this centre is a direct initiative under the "India Semiconductor Mission," a govt programme launched in Dec 2021 with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore. The mission aims to provide financial support for investments in semiconductor fabrication, display manufacturing, and chip design to strengthen India's electronics value chains.
The new centre is specifically designed to bolster the country's capability in semiconductor packaging, a critical "back-end" manufacturing process.
The project is structured with a phased timeline. The initial three years will focus on mini-displays assembly, testing, marking, and packaging. In the near term, it will focus on developing and perfecting mini-displays for smart devices and car dashboards, a critical segment of the electronics market.

As the project matures, the focus will shift to pioneering advanced mini-LED technology.
"The ultimate goal is to achieve complete indigenisation of high-tech components, culminating in the creation of a fully Indian-made 'head-up display', a futuristic technology that projects vital information directly into a user's line of sight," said a senior scientist at the CSIO.
This initiative is part of a broader push to grow India's semiconductor market, which was valued at approximately $38 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $100–110 billion by 2030.
