‘The Legend is Back': CS Sfaxien announce Maaloul's return after 9 Years with Ahly - Africa
Tunisian side CS Sfaxien confirmed the signing of veteran left-back Ali Maaloul in a free transfer on Saturday, marking the end of his nine-year tenure with Egyptian giants Ahly. The 35-year-old Maaloul had announced his departure from Ahly last May, after playing a pivotal role in one of the club's most successful eras. Speculation regarding his next move had been rife, with some suggesting he would retire, while others believed he would return to his childhood club, CS Sfaxien. On Saturday, CS Sfaxien made the announcement official with a video posted on their official Facebook page, headlined 'The Legend is Back.' Maaloul's stint with Ahly was marred by injury, as he underwent surgery in May 2024 to treat a partial tendon tear suffered during a match against Esperance de Tunis. The injury sidelined him for several months, including during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final. Despite signing a contract extension last summer, Maaloul was dropped from the squad to make room for a foreign player. When the transfer window reopened in January, he was not included in coach Marcel Koller's plans., as the club sought to strengthen their attack with a foreign forward. Since joining Ahly in the summer of 2016, Maaloul established himself as a cornerstone of the club's success. He recorded an impressive 51 goals and 83 assists in 287 appearances, earning a special place in the hearts of the club's supporters for his unwavering dedication and loyalty. Over his illustrious time in Cairo, the Tunisian international left behind an unmatched legacy, securing 21 titles, including four CAF Champions League trophies, two CAF Super Cups, six Egyptian Premier League titles, five Egyptian Super Cups, and four Egypt Cup victories. Before his time at Ahly, Maaloul helped CS Sfaxien secure the Tunisian League title in the 2012/13 season. Across 190 appearances for the club, he scored 39 goals and provided 43 assists in all competitions from 2008 to 2016. Uncertainty Surrounds Ali Maaloul's Next Move After Leaving Al Ahly The future of Tunisian football star Ali Maaloul remains unclear, more than a month after he officially departed Al Ahly, ending a highly successful nine-year spell with the Egyptian giants. The former left-back has yet to announce his next destination, leaving fans and clubs in suspense. Offers From Gulf Clubs Reports have suggested that several clubs from Saudi Arabia and Qatar are interested in signing Maaloul. However, no official agreements have been announced so far. Sources close to the player confirm that he has received multiple offers, but he has not made a final decision regarding his future. Possible Return to Tunisia A potential return to his boyhood club, CS Sfaxien, is also under consideration. According to insiders, the club and its fans are eager to see Maaloul back. However, financial differences remain a major obstacle, given the significant gap between his previous salary at Al Ahly and what he could earn in the Tunisian league. No Move to Another Egyptian Club Maaloul has ruled out any possibility of joining another Egyptian club. He has reportedly refused offers from Egypt out of respect for Al Ahly and its fans, stating that the Red Devils' jersey is the only one he would wear in Egyptian football. CAF Confederation Cup: RS Berkane Dominate Simba SC 2-0 in Final First Leg
In a fiercely contested battle at the Municipal Stadium, RS Berkane secured a 2-0 victory over Simba SC in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final. The match lived up to its billing as the recently-crowned Moroccan champions faced off against the determined Tanzanian outfit in what proved to be a tactical chess match from start to finish. RS Berkane, appearing in their fifth CAF Confederation Cup final, showcased the form that has seen them lose just once in this season's continental campaign. Coach Mouaine Chaabani's men demonstrated the tactical discipline and winning mentality that brought them previous CAF Confederation Cup success in 2020 and 2022, as they continue their quest for a third title to match CS Sfaxien's record. The visitors from Tanzania, finalists in this competition back in 1993, proved they hadn't made the journey to Morocco merely to make up the numbers. Simba SC, 22-time Tanzanian champions, entered the contest following an impressive run that saw them eliminate South Africa's Stellenbosch FC in the semifinals with a disciplined defensive display in the second leg. Today's encounter held special significance for Simba's South African coach Fadlu Davids, who previously faced Berkane when serving as assistant coach at Raja Casablanca. His familiarity with the Orange Boys' strengths was evident in his pre-match comments acknowledging the difficulty of playing at Berkane's fortress, where the hosts have been imperious throughout this campaign. For the newly-crowned Moroccan champions, this match represents another step toward a potential historic achievement – adding continental silverware to their domestic triumph. Before today's clash, Chaabani had expressed concern about injuries in his squad but emphasized the team's unified spirit that has carried them through an exceptional season. All attention now shifts to the return leg on May 25 at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, where Simba SC has yet to taste defeat in this season's competition. With the tie delicately poised, both teams will be eyeing the ultimate prize – continental glory and the opportunity to represent Africa in the CAF Super Cup.
