The Summer I Turned Pretty Premiere: Jer Commits an Act of Betrayal — Or Did He? You Be the Judge!

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Season 3. A major bombshell has nearly torn Belly and her soulmate apart, but is Jeremiah to blame? Let's recap. More from TVLine Jensen Ackles Compares Countdown Action Scenes, Says Truck Surfing Is a Whole 'Different Ballgame' (WATCH) Exclusive Countdown Sneak Peek: Amber Offers Mark Comfort - But Does She Know His Secret? Save the Dates: Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke in The Girlfriend, Love Island Reunion and More The Summer I Turned Pretty's third and final season — which debuted its first two episodes on Prime Video Wednesday — is already delivering a heavy dose of drama. We begin with a time jump, fast-forwarding to Belly's junior year of college, where she and Jer have been dating blissfully for the past three years. That is, until Belly learns devastating news: Jeremiah slept with another girl while on Spring Break in Cabo. But there is some complexity here. The couple had gotten into a fight before Jer left for the trip, prompting them to 'break up.' To Belly, this was hardly a real break. She figured they'd repair things upon his return — which they ultimately did. But to Jer, much like Ross in Friends, they were on a break! Relationship rules did not apply. He claims he didn't cheat on her, while she claims he betrayed her trust, and they have an explosive fight where they end things for good. (Well, for now.) During their time apart, we learn Belly is keeping her own secrets: Deep down, she knows a part of her will always love Conrad. After all, he was her first love, and the two even recently shared a romantic run-in at Cousins, which she conveniently has kept from Jeremiah. Knowing she has made her own mistakes, Belly begins to question if she's being too hard on her beau. Meanwhile, Taylor and Steven face problems of their own. The two are seeing other people, trying to ignore their feelings for each other, but are still secretly sleeping together. Steven finally gets the guts to end things with his girlfriend and drives to Taylor's house to tell her he wants to be in a real relationship with her. When Steven arrives at Taylor's, she hops in the car and they go for a drive, where Steven eventually tells Taylor how he feels. But after seeing the devastating effects love has had on her bestie Belly, Taylor isn't interested. She gets upset, and demands that Steven let her out on the side of the road — she can't spend another second in the car next to him. He complies, but immediately has a change of heart, and makes a U-turn to follow her. Then, Steven is T-boned by a truck. He ends up being fine (yay!), but he wakes up from a medically induced coma with a new sense of clarity: He tragically breaks things off with Taylor just as she has decided to be with him. (Boo!) And Steven isn't the only one who has a change of heart after the accident; Belly and Jeremiah have some epiphanies of their own. The two reunite in the waiting room and, overcome by just how precious life can be, immediately make up. As if nothing had ever happened, Jeremiah pops a surprising question, the question, as a matter of fact: Will Belly marry him? Yes, she says, before he can even finish asking. The two hug, kiss and appear to have their whole happy lives before them. But we can't help but wonder: Should Belly be more cautious in the wake of Jer's betrayal, or was his Spring Break adventure an honest mistake? Vote in our poll below, then grade the two-episode premiere and hit the comments with all your thoughts! ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty' is back and people are going to have some big feelings about it

There's a lot to unpack about third and final season of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' – and we don't just mean Belly's (Lola Tung) college duffle bag. Prime TV on Wednesday released the first two episodes of the summery, love triangle-laden series, which picks up after a four-year time jump to find Belly in her junior year at the fictional Finch College with her boyfriend Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno). Meanwhile, his older brother and Belly's ex, Conrad (Christopher Briney), is studying to be a doctor at Stanford University. While Belly and Jeremiah are still very much going strong, viewers are instantly reminded that the love triangle between the two brothers and Belly is still, of course, very much a thing, but not the focus of the first two episodes. The drama in these first two episodes – which take place largely outside of Cousins Beach, other than a select few flashbacks – stems largely from the conflict between Jeremiah and Belly, after Belly learns that Jeremiah cheated on her during a spring break trip to Cabo. The entire situation was very Rachel Green and Ross Gellar – a 'we were on a break' scenario. Jeremiah thought they were broken up when he went to Cabo; Belly did not. It was safe to assume some polarizing plot developments would ignite the show's passionate fandom, given the series released a preemptive warning to its active online community of viewers, asking them to 'keep the conversation kind' in a statement posted to its official X page ahead of the Season 3 debut. The show provided its followers with some guidelines, writing that users who engage in hate speech, bullying, targeting cast or crew and harassing or doxxing other members of the community would be 'banned.' The post did not detail how the rules would be enforced. 'I think we see with a lot of these love-triangle stories, people want the leading girl to end up with someone,' Tung told Teen Vogue in an interview published last week. 'When people have an attachment to the characters, they want to see it come together at the end.' Tung continued, 'I'm so grateful that they care so much, but people get a little scary about it.' The strong feelings are likely to continue all season, especially given that the second episode ends with Jeremiah proposing to Belly – a scene that has caused much discussion among show viewers. It all happened under unsurprisingly dramatic circumstances. After breaking up over Jeremiah's infidelity, the pair were brought back together after Belly's brother Steven (Sean Kaufman) was hospitalized following a car accident. With a little nudge from her friend Taylor (Rain Spencer), Belly forgave Jeremiah, who had been at the hospital for support. During a walk outside the hospital, after Belly forgives Jeremiah and tells him never to hurt her like that again, for which he promises, Jeremiah proceeds to ask Belly if she will marry him. Without presenting her with a ring (it matters!)… Just moments after her brother finally woke up from a medically induced coma (what?)… And she said yes (Oy vey). Book readers knew this was coming, but it still probably felt just as cringe on screen as it did on paper. It's not that Jeremiah can't be forgiven for a mistake, it's that Belly deserves better. (Here's lookin' at you, team Conrad people.) After all, Jenny Han, the author of the books on which the series is based, herself told People magazine in an interview published Wednesday that, as far as she's concerned, it's 'debatable' whether or not what Jeremiah did was considered 'cheating or not.' That we care at all is the ultimate testament to how good of a job the actors are doing on this show. Big plot twists will invite big feelings, which are fine, as long as they're accompanied by civility in equal measure. New episodes of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Season 3 will be available to stream on Wednesdays until the series finale on September 17.

Sunken pirate shipwreck could help solve mystery of £100million lost treasure

New research has claimed a sunken ship off the coast of Madagascar could be the long-lost Portuguese vessell the Archbishop of Goa and hold the key to a £110million treasure A sunken ship off the coast of Madagascar could finally solve one of history's greatest pirate mysteries, and unlock a jaw-dropping £110 million hoard of lost treasure. Hidden for more than 300 years beneath the waves near the island of Île Sainte-Marie, the wreck is now believed to be the long-lost Portuguese galleon Nossa Senhora do Cabo, which was captured in 1721 by feared pirates Olivier Levasseur and his partner-in-plunder John Taylor. In a bombshell new study, experts from the Center for Historic Shipwreck Preservation say this could be the key to tracking down one of the richest pirate plunders of all time. ‌ ‌ On board the Portuguese viceroy, the Archbishop of Goa, there were 200 slaves and a cargo of gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, silks, and religious artefacts. Lead researcher Brandon Clifford said: 'This wasn't just a pirate raid – it was a hijack of royal proportions.' The Cabo had been sailing from India to Portugal when a fierce storm near the Cape of Good Hope left it limping toward safety. But before repairs could be finished, Levasseur and Taylor pounced. After a short battle, the pirates hauled their prize to the pirate haven of Nosy Boraha, which was a notorious hideout once ruled by the likes of Captain Kidd and Henry Avery. On the island, the ship was stripped off all the treasure on board, and according to researchers, there were "110 diamonds, 250 emeralds, 20 rubies, 20 sapphires," along with coins, bars of precious metals and sacred Christian artefacts were seized. ‌ One legendary item, the Flaming Cross of Goa, which is said to be encrusted with jewels and so massive it took three men to lift, allegedly went straight into La Buse's personal stash, reports. Researchers have claimed Levasseur didn't stay lucky for long and after retiring to the island, he was eventually caught and hanged in 1729. But before his execution, legend says he hurled a cryptic note into the crowd. Now, new underwater surveys using sonar and seabed scans may finally be closing in on the fabled loot. A wreck matching the dimensions of an 18th-century Portuguese galleon has been found lying beneath the remains of an old pirate fort. Among the haul was Chinese porcelain, ivory, timber carvings and 13 gold coins. ‌ But it's the religious items that have raised eyebrows: a Madonna statue, an ivory Jesus, and a crucifix topper inscribed 'INRI'. Researchers say these match the kind of Catholic symbols carried by high-ranking clergy – like the Archbishop of Goa, who was onboard when the Cabo was seized. A report issued by those behind he study says: 'There's strong evidence this wasn't just another pirate ship – but a holy treasure ship that fell into pirate hands." Levasseur had renamed the captured vessel Victorieux, which is French for 'Victorious', and used it as his flagship. But its final fate has been debated for centuries, with some claiming it had wrecked elsewhere and others claiming the ship was deliberately sunk. Now, the team's findings suggest the Cabo was abandoned and possibly burned at Île Sainte-Marie after her legendary journey. With up to ten wrecks scattered around the pirate island, it's a race to see which – if any – holds the infamous treasure. But as the Mirror has learned, if that golden cross is ever found, it may confirm that the Cabo was indeed the ship that sparked one of piracy's greatest legends.
