Bills Running Back Kicks Extra Point In Preseason Game

Normally, when an NFL running back takes snaps at special teams, he's out there covering punts or kickoffs, or he's working in a return capacity. Ray Davis, though, is apparently not normal. The second-year Buffalo Bills running back was called upon to kick an extra point in the Bills' preseason opener on Saturday afternoon. With regular kicker Tyler Bass dealing with a pelvis injury, the Bills signed kicker Caden Davis a day before Saturday's game. Yet after their first touchdown, they called upon running back Ray Davis to kick the PAT. Wearing a kicking cleat, the 5-foot-8, 220-pound Davis booted the ball and got just enough air under it to clear the line of scrimmage. The ball flight was majestic, but it was good enough, as Davis' kick sailed straight through the middle of the uprights. Davis also had four carries for seven yards and one catch for seven yards in the first half. He's coming off a rookie season with 442 rushing yards and three touchdowns to go with 17 receptions for 189 yards and three touchdowns after being drafted in the fourth round out of Kentucky. But with that successful PAT, head coach Sean McDermott will know that he at least has an option in a pinch if Bass goes down during a regular-season or playoff game, when the team won't have the luxury of carrying a backup kicker. Who is going to win the Jets' kicking competition?

The New York Jets will promote competition at kicker when they report to training camp in late July. General manager Darren Mougey signed Caden Davis as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL draft. In mid June, fellow placekicker Harrison Mevis was signed after Anders Carlson was released from his contract. Mevis most recently kicked for the UFL's Birmingham Stallions. He was outstanding on that developmental stage, connecting on 95.2 percent of his field-goal attempts during the 2025 season (20 of 21). Mevis originally broke into the NFL by signing with the Carolina Panthers a UDFA last year, but was waived during final cuts. Davis was initially considered the in-house favorite. The former Texas A&M and Ole Miss standout was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award (best kicker in college football) this past season. He was invited to the 2025 Senior Bowl. Davis went 24-of-29 this past season, posting a career-best make percentage of 82.8%. In his five-year college career, he went 109-of-111 on extra points. It's difficult to identify the favorite to make the Jets' roster. Davis joined the team first as Mougey aggressively pursued his signature following the draft, giving him the upper hand. Mevis joined later, but his fantastic season in the UFL (and one year of NFL training camp experience) could give him an advantage. Special teams coordinator Chris Banjo will help make the decision at final cuts. Expect Mevis and Davis to consistently compete throughout training camp and the preseason, with the decision going down to the wire. Mevis' performance during the UFL season may give him the upper hand heading into camp. Nick Folk worked out for Jets on Monday

Caden Davis and Harrison Mevis have been less than perfect in their kicking competition at Jets' camp. The Jets, thus, appear to have interest in an old friend. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that the Jets worked out Nick Folk, who kicked for the team from 2010-16. Folk, 40, has played for four other teams in his 17 seasons. He spent the past two years in Tennessee, where he was 21-of-22 on field goals in 2024 and 29-of-30 in 2023. He missed only two extra points in his two seasons with the Titans. Folk, who made his only Pro Bowl in 2007 as a rookie with the Cowboys, has made 84.3 percent of his field goals in his career. Mevis played in the UFL, and Davis is a rookie out of Ole Miss.

Reports: Jets sign K Harrison Mevis after UFL stint

June 18 - The New York Jets signed kicker Harrison Mevis, who most recently played for the Birmingham Stallions in the 2025 UFL season, according to ESPN and other reports Tuesday. Mevis, 23, has yet to appear in an NFL game after a successful college career at Missouri. In 2024, he signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent but was waived during training camp. Mevis -- nicknamed "The Thiccer Kicker" for his burly frame -- went 20-for-21 on field goal attempts for Birmingham in the recently completed UFL season. The biggest play of his four-year career at Missouri was a 61-yard game-winning field goal to upset No. 15 Kansas State in 2023. He was a first-team All-American selection in 2021 and went 89-for-106 on field goals and 148-for-149 on extra point attempts in his career. The Jets already have two kickers on their roster ahead of training camp: veteran Anders Carlson and 2025 undrafted free agent Caden Davis. --Field Level Media
