Texas A&M rises four spots in the RPI rankings after defeating Auburn
Texas A&M rises four spots in the RPI rankings after defeating Auburn 14-seed Texas A&M's (30-25, 11-19 SEC) postseason hopes are still alive after making it past the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday, defeating 6-seed Auburn 3-2 behind another impressive performance from starting pitcher Justin Lamkin, who struck out five Tigers in five innings on the mound. While the Aggie offense was once again inconsistent, Kaeden Kent's three-run home run was enough to get Texas A&M past the finish line, as Auburn mustered two late home runs off Lamkin and Kaeden Wilson, as the Aggie pitching staff has slowed down two of the hottest teams in the SEC after defeating Mississippi State 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon. However, during the latter half of Thursday's win, star outfielder Jace LaViolette joined Texas A&M's long list of injuries, which already includes Gavin Grahovac and Caden Sorrell after a pitch injured his left hand, breaking his ring finger, and ending his 2025 season. Sadly, this could also be his last career appearance with the Aggies, as he is slated to enter the 2026 MLB draft as a Top 10-ranked prospect. The rest of the roster will need to step up, and while Caden Sorrell could still return, it's doubtful he'll be available against 1-seed LSU on Friday night. With the win, Texas A&M has risen four spots in the RPI to No. 50, and even though the Aggies have plenty of work to do to make it back to the NCAA Tournament, this is a solid start before facing the Tigers. Texas A&M will face LSU on Friday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network. Could Texas A&M star OF return for the SEC Tournament?
Could Texas A&M star OF return for the SEC Tournament? Texas A&M (28-25, 11-29 SEC) is fighting for its NCAA Tournament life, starting with a first round matchup in the SEC Tournament against 11-seed Mississippi State, one of the hottest teams in the conference. However, due to weather issues in Hoover, Alabama on Tuesday night, both teams will face off on Wedesday morning at 9:30 a.m. CT. Before Tuesday's game was supposed to be played, the pre-game SEC Availability report was released, and revealed some very surprising news that sophomore outfielder Caden Sorrell, who sustained a hand injury during last Friday's Game 2 win over Georgia, was listed as a game-time decison, which was shocking based on the recent image showing his right hand in a cast during last weekend's series loss. Given that he now has a little over 12 hours before the next game, the star outfielder has a legitimate shot to play against the Bulldogs, providing a critical boost to an Aggie battling lineup that has relied on home runs for a bulk of the team's offense. After returning from injury early in the SEC schedule, Sorrell's offense was the primary reason for Texas A&M's turnaround in conference play, hitting .337 with 32 hits and 12 home runs, while hit clutch hitting against LSU led to the Aggies' series win over the Tigers. If he can play, I give the Aggies more than a fighting chance to defeat a Mississippi State team coming off four consecutive SEC series, mainly due to Weston Moss being on the mound. Texas A&M more than likely needs to win the SEC Tournament in order to earn a bid, which would be automatic at that point, to make it back to the NCAA Tournament. A new image shows the severity of Texas A&M star outfielder's hand injury
A new image shows the severity of Texas A&M star outfielder's hand injury Texas A&M (28-24, 11-18 SEC) still has a fighting chance to make the NCAA Tournament, and after shutting out Georgia 6-0 behind junior starting pitcher Justin Lamkin's historic complete game shutout, tossing a career-high 15 strikeouts on Friday night, helped boost the Aggies' hopes if they can win the series on Saturday before the SEC Tournament next week. Texas A&M's injury issues continued to haunt the team, specifically the health of star outfielder Caden Sorrell, who, since his return to the team after recovering from a hamstring injury, had been one of the primary reasons for the Aggies' series wins over Tennessee, Arkansas, and LSU was Caden Sorrell's power at the plate, batting .337 while producing 32 hits and 12 home runs in 26 games. However, During Game 1 against Georgia on Thursday, Sorrell's three-run homer gave the Aggies an early 3-0 lead, but during his last at-bat, Sorrell's right hand was hit by a pitch, as he quickly left the game, and has been out ever since. He is assumed to have suffered a hamate injury, a bone located at the top of the hand, and thanks to a photo from an Aggie fan in attendance, it has been revealed that Sorrell is wearing a cast on his right hand. Without speculating, head coach Michael Earley has yet to provide an actual update regarding Sorrell's status, but this certainly does look like a potential season-ending injury given the time of the season. Aggie fans and media react to Texas A&M's Game 3 series sweeping loss to Missouri
Aggie fans and media react to Texas A&M's Game 3 series sweeping loss to Missouri Texas A&M (27-23, 10-17 SEC) all but killed its chances of making it back to the NCAA Tournament after letting last-place Missouri make its way to College Station and sweep the Aggies, which began with an eight-run comeback on Friday night after A&M's three consecutive home runs broke the game open with a 6-1 lead, that eventually dissipated. A&M's offensive attack, which has relied on the long ball for most of the team's comeback effort during SEC play, exposed the lack of consistent hitting that showed its ugly face throughout the weekend, especially in the final two games. Trailing 4-0 until the final inning on Saturday, the Aggies mustered two hits and one unearned run for a final 4-1 defeat. On Sunday, two hits were A&M's offensive output yet again, as star outfielder Caden Sorrell's solo home run served as the one earned run in the past two days. Texas A&M's pitching performance didn't matter given the offensive struggles, as better hitting would have likely resulted in a sweep in favor of the home team. With the loss, Texas A&M is on the very fringe of the NCAA Tournament picture, and will likely need to sweep Georgia and make a deep run in the SEC Tournament to have a shot at the postseason at this point, needing to jump back into the top 40 in the RPI rankings to have a legitimate case. Losing 10-1 during the final home game in Blue Bell Park is just another blemish on what has been a rocky season for the Maroon & White. Here are the reactions from Aggie fans and media members after the sweep: It's highly confusing More than likely, yes he does It certainly feels like a dream I mean, most coaches do financially It was on any "expert" bingo card this weekend He will, though History will more than likely be made, and it's not the good kind Exactly It's hard to think of any We shall see how things proceed from here What was expected vs. reality Pitifull performance Can't disagree Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Aggie fans and media react to Texas A&M's 4-1 series loss to Missouri on Saturday
Aggie fans and media react to Texas A&M's 4-1 series loss to Missouri on Saturday Texas A&M (27-21, 10-16 SEC) is likely out of contention for the NCAA Tournament after dropping this weekend's home series vs. the last-place Missouri Tigers, who, after coming back to win Game 1 9-6 on Friday night, secured a dominant 4-1 victory for the program's first series win of the season, and first in College Station since 2006. Entering the weekend, Texas A&M's postseason hopes were hanging on by a thread, needing at least three to four SEC wins to secure a spot in the regional round, but even if the Aggies win on Sunday, they'll likely need to sweep Georgia on the road, which is highly unlikely. However, if that happens, does this team still deserve to be in the NCAA Tournament? This all remains to be seen, but things do not look good right now. Mustering just two hits on the day, the Aggies' offense, outside of four home runs produced six runs on Friday night, has been non-existent, and, outside of Caden Sorrell's game-winning three-run home run against LSU last weekend, Texas A&M's would have lost that series as well. The fact that the offense heavily relies on the long ball to score runs is not sustainable, and will not produce another series win if the Aggies can't hit at an efficient rate, and it is much too late to change things up. As they say, when someone shows you who they are, believe them. After the game, Aggie fans and media members responding to the series loss: This narrative will be popular this week An underrated part of the Aggies' poor play It's actually pretty similar if we're being honest The truth really does hurt I'm guessing the comments are positive This is likely the scenario that needs to happen Progress? I don't believe this will be the case This is what happens when you lose to a team that was 0-24 in SEC play before this weekend Right on point It truly is an absolute failure in every facet of the word Billy Liucci's take Yes, yes they do Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.
