Sergio Perez in talks to join Cadillac for 2026 Formula 1 debut as team prepares bold entry
Sergio Perez (via Getty Images) Formula 1 veteran Sergio Perez is reportedly going to make a comeback to the grid in 2026 with Cadillac Racing , as the American car giant readies its highly anticipated debut in the sport. This collaboration will provide the veteran Mexican racer a new challenge after separating from Red Bull Racing . Cadillac will debut its F1 activity as a client team using Ferrari engines before growing into a full works team from General Motors starting in 2029. Cadillac Racing seeks Sergio Perez for 2026 Formula 1 launch Cadillac Racing made its first big step towards its 2026 Formula 1 debut by committing Sergio Perez as the team's top driver for its first year, according to a report from German publication Bild. The move marks Cadillac's intention to compete in the sport not as token entrants but as serious competitors, supported by a strategic plan that involves Ferrari engines in the early years and a switch to General Motors motors in the second half of the decade. With Sergio Perez added, there is also much experience within the new organisation. With 285 Grand Prix appearances—number eight all time—Sergio Perez gives Cadillac that technical knowledge and racing experience present only with an old-hand racer. His reputation for scoring podiums in mid-field cars while with Sauber and Force India (now known as Aston Martin) makes Sergio Perez an excellent signing for a starting-from-scratch operation. This update is followed by Sergio Perez's exit from Red Bull Racing, in which he was paid off for the rest of 2024. Despite having a contract for 2025, Red Bull's team leadership, led by Christian Horner, decided to make a change after Perez's unreliability. Ironically, his replacement, Liam Lawson, also failed to find form, reaffirming the view that Red Bull's second seat is still a poisoned chalice—something that might have even increased Perez's worth in the eyes of Cadillac. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo The Cadillac venture is being spearheaded by Graeme Lowdon, with former Renault technical director Nick Chester and ex-FIA head Pat Symonds contributing their know-how. Formula E drivers Norman Nato and Nyck De Vries are currently in Italy for the second round of the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). They participated in the 6 Hours of Imola Qualifying on Saturday, moving a step closer to the main race. Nato finished 9th, while De Vries secured 5th place in the session. Nyck De Vries does well, Norman Nato lags behind in 6 Hours of Imola Qualifying race Norman Nato, who races for Nissan in the Formula E Championship, represents Cadillac Racing in collaboration with Hertz Team Jota in the Hypercar category of the Endurance Championship. Nyck De Vries, from Mahindra Racing's Formula E team, finished 5th in the Imola qualifying. He competes for Toyota Gazoo Racing in the WEC, alongside teammate Ryo Hirakawa, who placed 4th in qualifying. Calling it his best effort on track, De Vries told Toyota Europe Newsroom: 'As a team, I think we can be fairly satisfied with qualifying fourth and fifth here. We maximised our package, as you can see from the tiny gap between the two cars. I don't think we could have done much better than that; we did a strong job to execute a clean qualifying. The gap to the front cars looks quite big over one lap, but we will do our best with race pace, tyre management, and strategy to challenge for the podium.' Both drivers are now set to compete in the final race of the 6 Hours of Imola on Sunday, scheduled from 1 PM to 7 PM local time. How Norman Nato, Nyck De Vries fared in Miami E-Prix In their last Formula E outing at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, Nato faced heartbreak after losing what looked like a sure win due to post-race penalties. Although he clinched pole and crossed the line first at the Miami E-Prix, he was relegated to 6th place in the revised results. De Vries had qualified 5th in Miami but ultimately dropped to 11th in the final standings after penalties were applied. Following this, they'll shift focus to Round 6 of the Formula E World Championship—the highly anticipated Monaco double-header on May 3 and 4. With momentum building, fans of both electric and endurance racing will be keeping a close eye on their performances.
