The case for GM's Mary Barra as one of the greatest automotive CEOs
General Motors' bold agreement to jointly develop five vehicles with Hyundai-Kia solidifies CEO Mary Barra's status as a transformative leader of a company that long seemed adrift. The deal encompasses gasoline, hybrid and electric power trains, deepening the giant automakers' alliance. They expect the vehicles' sales to top 800,000 a year. The vehicles include: The plan leverages each company's strengths. GM will lead development of the midsize pickup platform. Hyundai takes point on the others. The van will be built in the United States as soon as 2028. The other vehicles go on sale in 2028. Expect production in South America. An automaker that pivots News that GM will extend production of the Cadillac XT5 luxury SUV in Spring Hill, Tennessee — with updates to keep it relevant in an intensely competitive segment — is consistent with a hallmark of Barra's tenure. Barra has instilled adaptability in place of a corporate culture that seemed frozen in the headlights of change. Managing change Thus far, GM has managed the transition to electric power better than any mass manufacturer — with the possible exception of its seemingly unflappable partners at Hyundai-Kia. GM has introduced a broad range of appealing EVs — Cadillac Optiq, Vistiq, Lyriq and Escalade IQ; electric versions of the Chevrolet Equinox, Blazer, Silverado; premium EVs at GMC — while continuing to roll out first-rate internal combustion models. That bank shot has kept GM's core moneymaking vehicles fresh and competitive and allowed it to react to changing regulatory and market conditions. With a new generation of full-size pickups and SUVs around the corner, GM's prospects should get brighter over the next four to five years. Barra's leadership — and close collaboration with longtime professional partner, GM President Mark Reuss — has seen the automaker through upheavals ranging from a global pandemic to an administration undoing decades of trade, energy and environmental policy. 2026 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcats: New 'jailbroken' model will offer 6 million customization combos Not every idea worked There have been mistakes. GM grievously underestimated the difficulty it would have building electric vehicle batteries at new U.S. plants. It should have kept the popular, affordable Chevrolet Bolt EV in production at least another 18 months. GM overestimated the adoption pace of electric pickups, but turned that miscalculation to its advantage, sidestepping tariffs by moving full-size pickup production to the plant where it had planned to build EV pickups. Going all-in on EVs left GM with a lack of competitive hybrids. Playing catch-up now, the new ones coming in 18 months or so better be outstanding. Some will likely come from the repurposed Orion Assembly plant. GM's decadelong, $10 billion autonomous-vehicle program continued after Ford and most others bailed out of self-driving cars. Most worrisome, it's unclear whether GM can succeed long-term in China. Despite those missteps, the trend line is positive. GM's leadership has been consistent in an era of upheaval. It invests ambitiously and largely well, developing a sensible and forward-looking range of vehicles and drivetrains. How's the competition doing? Other mass manufacturers have stumbled more. Stocking GM's cupboard Barra built a strong team. GM grew from a company that struggled to attract talent outside the Midwest to one with its pick from top organizations, and it gets raided for talent by the likes of Amazon and eBay. Tellingly, Ford recently named former GM, Amazon and Alto Pharmacy executive Alicia Boler Davis to head its crucial Ford Pro unit. It's time to acknowledge that Barra and Reuss form one of the best C-suite duos in automotive history. They labored together through years when poor planning and financial pressure kept GM from building the best vehicles its people could create. Determined not to go back, they'll be a tough act to follow. Contact Mark Phelan: mmphelan@ Follow him on Twitter @mark_phelan. Read more on autos and sign up for our autos newsletter. Would You Pay $85,500 for This 1995 Ford Bronco?

View post: Official: The Cadillac XT5 Is Sticking Around With a Mild-Hybrid Update for 2027 This 1967 Jaguar XKE Series 4.2 is a stunning example of British motoring history, beautifully preserved, period-correct, and ready to be enjoyed or shown. View post: Amazon Is Selling a 'Powerful' Greenworks Chainsaw for 43% Off, and Shoppers Say It's 'Game Changer' Every enthusiast dreams of finding a low-mile or no-mile 'grandma' car that has been stashed away in a garage, sparingly used, but few ever get the chance. Those who do often end up selling their finds for ridiculous prices, which is exactly what happened with this 1995 Ford Bronco. Source: Bring a Trailer 0:02 / 0:09 2025 Ford Maverick: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice Watch More The Eddie Bauer-trimmed SUV sold for $85,500 on Bring a Trailer earlier this week, more than three times its original $27,810 MSRP. That's a wild price for a late fifth-generation Bronco, but this rig shows just 13,000 miles and looks new, inside and out. It sports a two-tone paint job and 15-inch aluminum wheels with General Grabber AP tires. Perhaps most important is the Bronco's condition underneath, where it shows zero rust and corrosion prevention treatment. By providing your email address, you agree that it may be used pursuant to Arena Group's Privacy Policy. Classic Broncos have become exceedingly popular with off-road tuners and are generally great candidates for engine swaps, but this truck has its original 5.8-liter V8 and four-speed automatic transmission. It also has four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. Source: Bring a Trailer While the new Bronco comes packed with tech and has a rugged interior design, the Eddie Bauer package turned the fifth-gen Bronco into a luxury roller, with premium Mocha cloth upholstery and room to stretch out. That said, the older Broncos drive like tractors compared to the new model. Prices like these are discouraging for the everyday enthusiast looking for a fun rig to play with, but this example's condition means it will likely end up sitting as a display car in a showroom or garage, not driven. Most Broncos are overpriced due to their popularity, it's a fact, but it's more than possible to find one in great condition with reasonable miles at a fraction of this auction's hammer price. This luxury brand tops J.D. Power's initial quality study
Lexus at No. 1 and Nissan at No. 2 topped J.D. Power's 2025 Initial Quality Study, replacing Ram and Chevrolet for the least problems per 100 vehicles in the first 90 days of vehicle ownership. Lexus had an average of 166 problems per 100 vehicles. The top Detroit brand was Chevrolet at No. 4 and the third-highest mass-market brand with 178 problems per 100 vehicles, up from 159 a year ago. Overall, the industry's quality based on the survey that ran from June 2024 through May 2025 of nearly 93,000 customers of 2025 model-year vehicles improved to 192 problems per 100 vehicles from 194, largely from improvement by Tesla Inc. Half of the top problems stem from infotainment issues, an area automakers are relying on for differentiation and expanding revenue streams. "While customers do find the larger touchscreens visually appealing, their functionality within the vehicle is an increasing source of frustration," Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, said in a statement. "Customers are having to tap and swipe through multiple screens to access key vehicle functions like climate settings and built-in garage door openers. Owners find these things to be overly complicated and too distracting to use while driving. By retaining dedicated physical controls for some of these interactions, automakers can alleviate pain points and simplify the overall customer experience." For the first time, plug-in hybrids had more problems than fully electric vehicles at 237 per 100 vehicles compared to 212, respectively, with J.D. Power attributing the EV improvement to Tesla. Gasoline-powered vehicles at 184 and hybrids at 196, however, still had fewer issues. Following Chevrolet, Dodge ranked at No. 7 with 180 problems per 100 vehicles, down from last year's 300. Buick tied with Genesis at No. 9 at 183, worse from 164 in 2024. Jeep was just after at No. 10 with 186, improvement from last year's 199. Ford, GMC, Cadillac, Lincoln, Chrysler and Ram all fell below the study average of 192. With 269 problems per 100 vehicles, Audi finished last at No. 31, excluding Tesla and Rivian, which didn't meet the study's requirements. Ford Mustang ranked as the highest sporty car. Buick Encore GX was the highest-ranked small SUV. Cadillac XT5 was the top midsize premium SUV. Ford Escape finished as the top compact SUV. The top large SUV was the Chevrolet Tahoe. Chevrolet Blazer received the top midsize SUV recognition. Jeep Gladiator tied with Hyundai Santa Cruz for top midsize pickup truck, while for full-size trucks the Ford F-150 tied with the Chevrolet Silverado. Ford Super Duty topped the large heavy-duty pickup segment. The Porsche 911 was the highest-ranked vehicle overall with 116 problems per 100 vehicles. Ford Motor Co., whose financial results have struggled from warranty costs and recalls, in a news release highlighted that the Ford brand had more segment winners than any other brand, though General Motors Co. overall had the most top-ranked vehicles in their segments. Ford's eligible vehicles placed in the top three of their respective segments. No. 14 Ford's problems per 100 vehicles increased to 193 from 178, and No. 20 Lincoln's fell to 206 from 224. "Customers expect new vehicles to make their lives easier, more fun, or both right from the first mile," Josh Halliburton, Ford's executive director of quality, said in a statement. "Four segment topping finishers and overall improving vehicle quality scores for most nameplates show that while we have to remain laser focused on earning the trust of our customers, we're headed in the right direction." None of the Detroit Three's plants received assembly line quality awards from J.D. Power. Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. Portions copyrighted by the respective providers.

Auto review: 2025 Cadillac Optiq is the optimal luxury electric SUV
There's a perception that everything is bigger in America, and it's hard to dispute. Generous proportions have always been an American automotive hallmark. Large size is certainly embedded in Cadillac's DNA, and that's how its devotees like it - mostly. There are those abhor massiveness yet still desire the luxury, options and agility that comes with Cadillac's living-large persona. Oh, and make it an EV while you're at it. Enter the 2025 Cadillac Optiq, which is about the same size as a Cadillac XT5 or a Tesla Model Y, but with a longer wheelbase and powered by volts. This allows for a roomy interior as well as a radically sloped windshield and backlight, lending the 190-inch long Optiq a low, sleek, sporty appearance that renders it among the best looking of the breed. The Optiq's striated rear window nicely picks up the Vegas-style front end's lighting detail. Well done. The inside story is just as impressive, with a sizable 33-inch LED display resting atop the instrument panel. Unlike other automakers that piece together multiple screens under a single piece of glass to mimic a single display, Cadillac gives the Optiq a screen that actually is a single display, one where the graphics traverse the entire screen. It's used for both driver instrumentation and infotainment duties. A head-up display is optional on upper trim levels. Thoughtfully, Cadillac designers use physical buttons for the climate control, rather than having drivers hunt and peck onscreen for them. Bravo. Less enthralling is the total absence of support for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Cadillac does build-in other software, however, including Google Built-In, offering Google Maps, Google Assistant, and access to Spotify and Amazon Music. A 5G Wi-Fi hotspot and a superb 19-speaker AKG Audio System with Dolby Atmos comes standard. But the 2025 Cadillac Optiq does boast an impressive amount of interior volume, with 101 cubic feet of passenger volume and 26 cubic feet of cargo volume. That said, there is no front trunk, as there are in other EVs. Given their typically meager size, you won't miss it. Headroom and legroom are substantial in both rows, something you'd expect in a Cadillac. Trim quality is fairly good, although the presence of hard plastic trim on the lower door panels is abysmal for a Cadillac. And while the seats are not leather, they prove to be a comfortable alternative. And the mid-century modern door handles are an absolutely fabulous design touch. An 85-kilowatt-hour battery pack powers two motors that deliver all-wheel drive. Rated at 300 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, this powertrain provides an EPA-rated 302 miles of range. GM supplies a dual-level charging cord for recharging using an appliance-style four-pronged outlet or a standard three-pronged outlet for recharging at home at a 19.2-kW rate, supplying 55 miles of range per hour. You can use a DC fast charger, which will recharge the Optiq at rates up to 150 kW, providing 79 miles of range in 10 minutes. Yet the Optiq's motors perform differently. The front permanent-magnet synchronous motor constantly supplies power, while the rear induction motor works when needed, most importantly when accelerating. There's more than enough power for the task at hand. The vehicle's 5,500-pound curb weight and low-mounted battery pack ensure that it has a plated feel. Ride quality seems expertly balanced between sporty athleticism and ride comfort. The old-school Cadillac bob and weave is absent here. And as is the case with every EV, it's mercifully quiet, with even the worst road surface not feeling too intrusive. Best of all, GM's excellent SuperCruise semi-autonomous self-driving system is standard, and it works very well. While the 20925 Cadillac Optiq shares its underpinnings a with the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Honda Prologue, both of which are built alongside it in Mexico, the Optiq is clearly a notch above, offering value - now there's a word rarely heard about a luxury vehicle - that makes it a must-drive if you're looking in its $54,390-$57,090 base price range. The 2025 Cadillac Optiq proves the excellence of GM's EV lineup and makes for a worthy entry-level Cadillac EV. How good is it? Consider the Cadillac Optiq the optimal compact luxury SUV. 2025 Cadillac Optiq Base price: $54,390-$57,090 Powertrain: Dual-motor all-wheel drive Horsepower/Torque: 300/354 pound-feet EPA range: 302 miles Recharge time (240-volt): 33 miles/hour Length/Width/Height: 190/84/65 inches Ground clearance: 6 inches Payload: Not listed Cargo capacity: 26-57 cubic feet Towing capacity: 1,500 pounds Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. 2 year old critically injured in Rock County crash
LA PRAIRIE, Wis. (WTVO) — A two-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries in a three-vehicle collision in Rock County on Sunday afternoon, police said. According to the Rock County Sheriff's Office, around 2:13 p.m., the 2-year-old was a passenger in a GMC Terrain driven by a 25-year-old man from Milton, who was traveling east on US 14. As the GMC began to slow to make a left-hand turn onto S. Henke Road, a Cadillac XT5, driven by a 56-year-old man from Janesville, failed to slow and crashed into the back of the GMC, sending it to spin into the intersection and collide with a Jeep Gladiator that was traveling west. The 2-year-old was evacuated by helicopter to a local hospital. All the other occupants were taken to hospitals for treatment and released. The case is still under investigation, police said.
