First Philippine Barrio Fiesta Celebrated in Cairns, Queensland
Organised by the Philippine Cultural Society of Cairns Inc. with support from the Cairns Regional Council, the event was attended by Mayor Amy Eden and council staff. Highlights included the parade of Miss Charity and Little Miss Charity candidates, cooking and karaoke contests, a cultural fashion ramp, and food stalls run by Filipino business owners. Cultural exhibits, arts and crafts, and live performances from local Filipino artists capped the night. Cyclist dies in crash at Smithfield Mountain Bike Park in Cairns
A cyclist has died from head injuries after a mountain bike crash on a trail in Far North Queensland. Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) was called to Smithfield Mountain Bike Park at McGregor Road, north of Cairns, at about 10:30am. A QAS spokesperson said the cyclist was not taken to hospital. a Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed officers attended the scene at about 11:15am "following the sudden non-suspicious death of a 57-year-old man". Earlier this morning at the mountain bike park the state government and Cairns Regional Council announced $15 million in funding for 55 kilometres of new tracks in the area to be completed by 2028. The announcement was made before the crash. The Cairns leg of the international Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival is scheduled to be held at the park from May 21-25. A report is expected to be prepared for the coroner.
