6.24 magnitude earthquake felt in Egypt

Cairo CAIRO - 22 May 2025: No losses in life or facilities have resulted from a Thursday earthquake of a 6.24 on the Richter Scale magnitude at 6:19 a.m. Cairo local time. In a statement, Cairo Governorate said that the National Emergency and Public Safety Network Control Center and the governorate's Central Operations Room have followed up with the Cairo Security Directorate, Civil Defense, and all neighborhoods. The situation has stabilized, and monitoring is ongoing. The earthquake originated on the island of Crete at a depth of the 68.91. The epicenter is 499 kilometers north of Marsa Matrouh on the North Coast of Egypt. Turkey, Greece, and Libya were also affected by the earthquake. Only on May 14, Egyptians felt a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that also originated near Crete. Egypt incurred no losses in the aftermath. Taha Rabeh, head of the Egyptian National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics told Egypt Today explained that people felt the tremor in Cairo due to the soft clay soil, which was affected by the earthquake's depth despite the distance from the epicenter. Rabeh said the area east of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea is known for its seismic activity due to the subduction of the African plate beneath the European plate and the presence of an active fault, making it prone to earthquakes. He advised citizens to remain calm during any earthquake and to seek safe locations, such as under a sturdy table or piece of furniture, while avoiding windows and unsecured objects, warning against rushing outside, which could lead to greater disasters than the quake itself.

Cairo's Historic Attaba Market Undergoes EGP 28 Million Renovation

The first phase of the project will improve infrastructure, upgrade street facades, and create organised spaces for vendors. Mar 18, 2025 Cairo's Attaba Market in El Mosky is undergoing a major redevelopment, with EGP 28 million allocated to the first phase of renovations. The project, led by the Ministry of Local Development and the Cairo Governorate, aims to modernise the historic commercial hub while preserving its architectural heritage. Minister of Local Development Manal Awad and Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber inspected the ongoing works, which include upgrading infrastructure beneath key streets such as El-Aseely, El-Gohary, and Youssef Naguib. Vendors who previously occupied these streets have been temporarily relocated to Attaba Garage while construction takes place. As part of the redevelopment, 473 structured stalls will be built to replace the informal street setups previously used by vendors, ensuring better organisation while maintaining accessibility for shop owners and pedestrians. The Central Agency for Reconstruction will oversee the construction of these new vendor spaces. The project also includes the restoration and repainting of historic buildings in coordination with the National Organisation for Urban Harmony to enhance the district's aesthetic appeal. To improve safety, new public utility networks will be installed, including upgraded drainage systems, fire prevention infrastructure, and improved pedestrian pathways to facilitate movement throughout the area. Governor Saber announced that upon completion of the renovations, vendors will be allowed to return under a new organisational model developed in collaboration with the UN-Habitat programme and urban planning authorities.

EXPLAINER: Souq El-Ataba — historic Cairene market gets modern makeover - Urban & Transport

Egypt's famous Ataba market, known for its congestion and historic value, will be revamped by the Ministry of Local Development, in cooperation with Cairo Governorate and UN-Habitat to make it safer, more organized, and visually appealing for merchants and visitors, per a ministry statement. Souq El-Ataba, or Ataba Market, emerged in 1869 when Khedive Ismail desired a stone marketplace similar to those in France and Turkey, per the Cairo Governorate website. Since then, Ataba has become Cairo's most famous open market, serving as a bustling commercial hub for well over a century. The market is a stone's throw away from the famous Ataba Square [transliterated to Threshold Square], which predates the market by decades. Due to its historical significance, the Ministry of Local Development, the Cairo Governorate, and UN-Habitat initiated a comprehensive redevelopment plan to enhance infrastructure, improve safety, and preserve the area's cultural heritage. The infrastructure improvement will focus on pedestrian flow to solve the congestion problem, while the safety measures will prioritize fire safety. The redevelopment will also provide a dignified working environment for vendors and a better shopping experience for visitors. Once complete, the new Ataba Market will serve as a model for revitalizing other traditional markets across Cairo. Broader Redevelopment Efforts in Ataba The Ministry of Local Development redevelopment project is an extension of several government efforts to redevelop the area since 2019, following multiple fires that caused significant losses. In 2024, the government launched an initiative to upgrade Ataba Square and the surrounding Moski area to highlight the urban aesthetic and improve infrastructure as part of the country's effort to develop Khedivial Cairo into a modern tourist and urban destination, restoring its status as 'Paris of the East.'
