Cairo's Historic Attaba Market Undergoes EGP 28 Million Renovation

Cairo's Attaba Market in El Mosky is undergoing a major redevelopment, with EGP 28 million allocated to the first phase of renovations. The project, led by the Ministry of Local Development and the Cairo Governorate, aims to modernise the historic commercial hub while preserving its architectural heritage.
Minister of Local Development Manal Awad and Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber inspected the ongoing works, which include upgrading infrastructure beneath key streets such as El-Aseely, El-Gohary, and Youssef Naguib. Vendors who previously occupied these streets have been temporarily relocated to Attaba Garage while construction takes place.
As part of the redevelopment, 473 structured stalls will be built to replace the informal street setups previously used by vendors, ensuring better organisation while maintaining accessibility for shop owners and pedestrians. The Central Agency for Reconstruction will oversee the construction of these new vendor spaces.
The project also includes the restoration and repainting of historic buildings in coordination with the National Organisation for Urban Harmony to enhance the district's aesthetic appeal. To improve safety, new public utility networks will be installed, including upgraded drainage systems, fire prevention infrastructure, and improved pedestrian pathways to facilitate movement throughout the area.
Governor Saber announced that upon completion of the renovations, vendors will be allowed to return under a new organisational model developed in collaboration with the UN-Habitat programme and urban planning authorities.
