EGP 10,000 Fine for Street Butchering & Waste During Eid Al-Adha

Veterinary Director Sabry Zeinhem warned that illegal commercial slaughtering may lead to fines and jail time. May 30, 2025 Cairo authorities have announced strict penalties for anyone found slaughtering animals in public streets during Eid Al-Adha, with fines reaching up to EGP 10,000 and potential jail time. Governor Ibrahim Saber confirmed that environmental violation reports will be issued against those who leave behind waste or blood in public spaces. To maintain hygiene and public health, slaughtering outside official abattoirs is strictly prohibited. The city's government-run slaughterhouses—El-Aly, Girco, Salam, Momtaz, Tora, Helwan, and 15 May—will operate around the clock throughout Eid, offering their services free of charge. Facilities include pre- and post-slaughter veterinary inspections, holding pens, and vehicle waiting areas. The Governor also banned the setup of live animal stalls or markets in public areas, warning of immediate legal action for non-compliance. The Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority will be on standby to remove slaughter-related waste and ensure environmental safety. Veterinary Director Sabry Zeinhem reiterated that unauthorised commercial slaughtering can result in severe penalties, particularly for repeat offences. Individuals who carry out sacrifices in the streets or outside their homes may also face legal consequences under public sanitation and environmental protection laws. Citizens are urged to report violations via the following hotlines: 27426993, 27427053, or 19561.

Medieval Wall Fragments Found During Al-Sayeda Aisha Square Revamp

The uncovered wall sections formed part of Cairo's 12th-century fortifications under the Fatimid dynasty. May 01, 2025 Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced the discovery of fragments of the city's medieval defensive wall during redevelopment works at Al-Sayeda Aisha Square. The square is being transformed into a pedestrian tourist corridor linking the Citadel to mosques like Al-Rifa'i and Sultan Hassan, with increased green spaces and a ban on vehicular traffic. Saber confirmed the imminent dismantling of the accident-prone Al-Sayeda Aisha Bridge, built in the 1980s and linked to 15 crashes in 2024 due to its hazardous curvature. Traffic will be rerouted via a new axis behind Al-Masbah Mosque, connecting to Salah Salem Road via a planned overpass. The first phase of the alternative route is nearing completion, with a second-phase bridge over the Civilisations Axis to follow. The uncovered wall sections formed part of Cairo's 12th-century fortifications under the Fatimid dynasty. No preservation plans were detailed, but the governor stressed the revamp prioritises pedestrian safety and heritage visibility.

Cairo Governorate to Develop Sayida Aisha Area Into Tourist Walkway

The project will connect Masjid Al-Sayida Aisha to the Citadel and Sultan Hassan Mosque, highlighting Cairo's Islamic heritage. Apr 11, 2025 Cairo Governor Dr. Ibrahim Saber has announced plans to transform the Sayida Aisha area into a tourist destination, with a new walkway connecting several of the capital's most significant Islamic landmarks. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to revitalise historic Cairo and enhance its appeal to both local and international visitors. The Sayida Aisha area, named after the revered Islamic figure and home to a mosque bearing her name, holds deep spiritual and cultural significance. The planned walkway will stretch from Masjid Al-Sayida Aisha to the Saladin Citadel and Masjid Al-Sultan Hassan, integrating key architectural and spiritual landmarks within a single accessible route. The project also includes ongoing efforts to restore the area's built heritage, including a historic wall that had long been obscured by surrounding buildings. To enable restoration, residents living near the site have been relocated and compensated, allowing the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to begin preservation work.

Egypt raises public transport fares after fuel hike but maintains bread prices - Society

Cairo Governorate announced a 10 percent increase in public and group transport fares across Greater Cairo, while the Ministry of Supply announced keeping subsidized bread prices at their present rate. The announcements follow the Petroleum Products Pricing Committee's decision to raise gasoline and diesel prices starting Friday. The governorate increased fares on average by approximately 10 percent for most routes, with fares rising to 15 percent for longer routes. Tickets for buses operating on Public Transport Authority lines will be EGP 10 for standard and EGP 20 for air-conditioned buses. Meanwhile, group transport companies operating on other lines have raised the price of tickets for standard minibuses to EGP 16 and EGP 19 for air-conditioned minibuses. Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber stated that the new fares consider the length and number of trips on each route to ensure fairness. He also noted that the Cairo governorate coordinated with neighbouring governorates with shared routes to standardize pricing and prevent commuter exploitation. Furthermore, Saber emphasized that the updated fares balance the interests of passengers and drivers, adding that banners and stickers displaying the new fare prices have been prominently placed at the entrances of all transport terminals to ensure transparency for passengers. Similarly, other governorates announced similar fare increases in public and group transport. Meanwhile, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk affirmed that the price of subsidized Baladi bread remains fixed at 20 piastres per loaf for ration card holders. He noted that the ministry carefully considers all cost components and subsidized bread production inputs, including updated diesel prices. On Thursday, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources raised the prices of all types of gasoline, diesel, industrial mazut, gas for brick factories, and butane by 11.7 to 33 percent, effective Friday, 11 April.
