Kyle Harrison, six relievers help Giants blank Marlins
May 31 - Kyle Harrison combined with six relievers on a three-hitter, Matt Chapman homered and the San Francisco Giants opened a three-game road series against the Miami Marlins with a 2-0 victory Friday night. Heliot Ramos tripled on the game's fifth pitch and scored on a Wilmer Flores single, giving the Giants a lead they never relinquished en route to snapping a three-game losing streak. Making his second start of the season after an early demotion to Triple-A, Harrison (1-1) allowed just a single to Eric Wagaman and three walks in five innings. He struck out five. Chapman's homer, his 10th of the season, came in the fourth against Marlins starter Cal Quantrill (3-5) to give Harrison a two-run cushion. The Giants threatened multiple other times against Quantrill, including in the second, when they failed to score despite doubles by Patrick Bailey and Tyler Fitzgerald. In between, Casey Schmitt's liner to center field was turned into a double play, with Dane Myers nailing Bailey trying to advance to third. Quantrill limited San Francisco to just the two runs in five innings despite serving up eight hits, a walk and a hit batter. He struck out seven. Tristan Beck, Ryan Walker, Erik Miller, Tyler Rogers, Spencer Bivens and Camilo Doval followed Harrison to the mound, keeping the Marlins scoreless while allowing just two hits and four walks over four innings. Miami threatened in both the seventh, when they had runners at second and third with one out, and eighth, when they put runners at first and second with one out. Miller and Rogers each recorded a strikeout to end the seventh, before Doval got Connor Norby to fly to center to close out the eighth. Doval, who regained his closer role earlier in the week, then worked around a two-out walk to Victor Mesa Jr. in the ninth for his sixth save. Fitzgerald collected three hits, while Chapman and Bailey had two apiece for the Giants, who out-hit the Marlins 11-3. Norby's leadoff double in the seventh was the only extra-base hit for Miami, which was opening a six-game homestand. --Field Level Media

Giants beat Marlins 2-0
Matt Chapman homered, Kyle Harrison pitched five shutout innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the Miami Marlins 2-0 on Friday night. Tyler Fitzgerald went 2 for 3 with a double and a stolen base for the Giants, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Harrison (1-1) made his second start since moving to the rotation, with three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander still out because of a strained right pectoral muscle. Harrison held the Marlins (22-33) without a hit until Eric Wagaman's leadoff single in the fourth. The left-hander didn't allow another one, striking out five and walking three. Five relievers held the Marlins to two hits before before Camilo Doval got the final four outs for his sixth save. Chapman hit a solo shot off Marlins starter Cal Quantrill (3-5) that went 420 feet to left, which made it 2-0 in the fourth and tied Chapman with Heliot Ramos and Wilmer Flores for the team home run lead with 10. Quantrill struck out a season-high seven over five innings. He gave up eight hits, two runs and walked one. The Giants took the lead in the first when Flores drove in Ramos — who tripled earlier in the inning — with a two-out single that ended an 11-pitch at-bat. Connor Norby's seventh-inning double and pinch-hitter Jesús Sánchez's single in the eighth were Miami's only other hits. The Marlins stranded nine base runners and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Down 0-2 in the eighth, Sánchez hit a leadoff single against Spencer Bivens and advanced when Otto Lopez was hit by a pitch. Doval came in with two out and retired Norby on a flyout to end the threat. The Giants have gone 12 straight games without scoring more than four runs. Giants LHP Robbie Ray (7-0, 2.56 ERA) will start the middle game of the series against Marlins RHP Edward Cabrera (1-1, 4.73).
