Islanders know getting Cal Ritchie to NHL isn't ‘a race' — but training camp could change that plan

The Islanders should have the luxury of time with Cal Ritchie, and it appears they plan to use it. Ritchie, the 20-year-old from Brampton, Ontario, was the centerpiece of the Brock Nelson deal and, over the long term, projects as a top-six centerman for the Islanders. In the immediate, though, general manager Mathieu Darche doesn't sound ready to rush Ritchie to the NHL. 'Well, it's a process. I want them to have an NHL career, not play games,' Darche said this week in an appearance on The Sheet with Jeff Marek. 'It's not a race, whoever plays his first game or his first 20 games. Having said that, play at training camp. Yes, we have a lot of forwards, and if Cal comes to training camp and outplays everyone, I'll make room for him on the roster.'

Islanders Prospect Cal Ritchie, Oshawa Generals Advance To OHL's Eastern Conference Final

On Sunday night, New York Islanders prospect Cal Ritchie and the Oshawa Generals defeated the Brantford Bullodgs 4-1 in Game Six to advance to the OHL's Eastern Conference Final. Ritchie and the Generals dropped the first two games of the series, before winning four straight to advance. Advertisement After collecting nine points (one goal, eight assists) in their opening round six-game series against the Brampton Steelheads, Ritchie recorded six points (three goals, three assists) in six games against Brantford. He recorded at least one point in the final five games of the series and has points in 11 of 12 playoff games thus far with 15 points (four goals, 11 assists). The Islanders acquired Ritchie, Oliver Kylington, a first-round pick in 2026 or 2027, and a conditional third-round pick in 2028 from the Colorado Avalance for Brock Nelson, and William Dufour on March 6. Ritchie is expected to make the Islanders out of training camp and serve as either the No. 2 or No. 3 centerman. ` Stay updated with the most interesting Islanders stories, analysis, breaking news and more!
