Port Wyndham Crocs snuff out Waringarri Crows in NAIDOC round clash
It was a high-scoring game between the Port Wyndham Crocs and the Waringarri Crows at the weekend as the East Kimberley Football League took to the field for NAIDOC round at the weekend.
The Crocs were in the lead from the get-go as the two sides battled it out on Clarrie Cassidy Oval on Saturday afternoon, kicking four goals to the Crows' two, 4.3 (27) to 2.1 (13).
The Crows struggled to keep up with the Crocs, who continued to add to their lead with another four goals before the half-time siren, 8.9 (57) to 5.2 (32).
By the end of the third term the Crocs had doubled the Crows' score, with prospects of a win looking abysmal for the Waringarri side, 13.12 (90) to 7.3 (45).
But in the final term the Crows surged on the scoreboard, doubling their goal count with seven goals to come within 10 points of the Crocs
But the Crocs managed to hang on to their lead to take home the win, 14.15 (99) to 14.5 (89).
The Crocs' Caleb Calwyn was the top goal kicker of the match with four and was named best on ground, while Clement Chulung, Eric Cox and Jahmal Stretch tied for the top scorers for the Crows on three goals each.
The Ord River Magpies also claimed the win in a close match against the Warmun Eagles at the Kununurra Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon.
By half-time there was just one point between the two sides, with Warmun in the lead, 3.2 (20) to 3.1 (19).
But Ord River managed to pull in front during the second half, kicking two goals to the Eagles' one to take home the win, 5.5 (35) to 4.5 (29).
Ord River's Desmond Farrell was the top goal scorer of the match on two goals.
The women's competition had a bye this week but will return on August 2
