'As much as it feels like home, it will never be home': How Parsva, an international student, built a life far from India in California

When Parsva Jain left India to pursue his education at a state university in California, he carried with him a checklist: college rankings, job prospects, cultural inclusivity, climate, and safety. But what unfolded over the months was a lesson not just in academics, but in adaptation, resilience, and quietly crafting a life far from home. 'I was looking at the college rankings first,' Parsva recalled, explaining the parameters he considered while shortlisting universities. 'Then came good job opportunities, climate, and culture—there are people from all over the world here. Safety was also important.' He had envisioned the United States as a land of academic excellence, but he didn't expect how stark the shift in teaching style would feel. At his university, lectures are recorded and uploaded online, giving students the flexibility to learn at their own pace. 'You have two weeks in advance to prepare. There are no constant assignments handed over to you,' he said. This self-paced approach came as a contrast to India's rigid structure. 'They focus more on writing. It's not about being accurate, but being knowledgeable. 'Education in the US is exponentially more expensive than in India. Tuition plus living costs can range anywhere between $7,000 to $20,000 a year,' he noted. While private universities sometimes offer scholarships due to dedicated budget allocations, state schools often don't. To strike a balance, many students take on-campus jobs. 'We have a portal where we can apply for jobs. It's very easy to access, and there are always lots of postings,' he said. 'You will always have something you can do.' However, there were expenses that took him by surprise—items like lamps, fans, shoe racks, or monitors that one wouldn't factor in back home. Travel costs, too, were higher than anticipated. 'Going out to a place, you don't calculate the costs, but they add up.' Culture shock and community One of the most powerful aspects of Parsva's journey has been navigating the cultural landscape of California. 'Here, people are from the rest of the world. Everyone is facing the same issue, staying away from home,' he shared. He found comfort in this shared sense of displacement. 'There are no discriminatory aspects to that, which is why people are very friendly. Even if you meet them for the first time, they are likely to be friends with you. ' Yet, the ache of homesickness is ever-present. 'As much as it feels like home, it will never be home,' he admitted. The first year, in particular, felt heavy. 'You always feel like you must call your family, friends at home.' His advice to new students is simple but powerful: Engage. 'Every day there are two to three activities happening. Just put yourself there and you will be great.' Accommodation and independence Parsva benefited from guaranteed on-campus housing for two years. For those living off-campus, he advises ensuring proximity to public transport for convenience. But perhaps the most valuable tip? 'Do learn how to cook,' he said. 'There are a lot of dietary restrictions we have as Indians. I'm a vegetarian and I don't always find good food for me, so learning to cook is very important. It's way cheaper than ordering. ' Careers and clarity Despite financial strains, Parsva finds reassurance in the university's strong career support. 'All campuses allocate a lot of resources to ensure there are jobs available. There is a whole building for career services,' he said. 'It feels like no matter what, you will get a job.' He also dispelled one common myth: That studies in the US are easier. 'You need to be at the top of your academics every day of the week,' he cautioned. 'If you don't study every day, you will fall behind, and exams will be brutal.' A life reimagined Parsva Jain's experience stands as a rich narrative of growth, grit, and gradual belonging. While he acknowledges the challenges of leaving the comforts of home, he also embraces the journey. 'You have to be prepared to be away from the comfort,' he said. 'Be ready to face that.'
