North County dental office releases statement after girl dies post-surgery

The girl was transported to Rady Children's Hospital Emergency Department, where she was later pronounced dead. A spokesperson for Dreamtime Dentistry released a statement from Dr. Ryan Watkins regarding the incident, which can be found below: We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our young patient, which occurred several hours after her completed dental procedure. The patient was referred to our office for dental treatment under general anesthesia due to her young age and acute situational anxiety. Throughout the procedure, she was continuously monitored by our dentist anesthesiologist, who is a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology as well as a Fellow in Anesthesiology from American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and active member of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists who has over 20 years of experience successfully administering general anesthesia on children, with no complications observed. Following the procedure, she was discharged in stable condition—awake, with stable vital signs and protective reflexes intact—into her mother's care, following our standard post-anesthesia protocols. At this time, the cause of death has not been determined. The medical examiner is conducting a thorough investigation, with which we are fully cooperating. We are committed to ensuring all facts come to light. We cannot discuss specific details due to privacy laws and the active investigation. We respectfully ask for patience as the medical examiner completes their work, as premature speculation may cause additional pain to the family. The safety and well-being of our patients have always been and remain our highest priority. While we understand the concerns and questions surrounding this tragic event, we respectfully ask for patience as the investigation proceeds. For the sake of the family and the integrity of the process, we encourage restraint regarding speculation. Our hearts break for the family during this unimaginable time of grief, and we extend our deepest condolences as we maintain our focus on supporting the family and cooperating fully with the medical investigation. We will provide updates when appropriate. LIST: 2025 ‘California Distinguished' schools in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — There are 12 San Diego County elementary schools that have been selected for the 2025 California Distinguished Schools Program. Selected by officials with the California Department of Education (CDE), schools that are recognized were determined to have demonstrated 'exemplary achievements.' CDE said it uses a multiple measures accountability system to identify eligible schools based on their performance and progress. Performance on these measures is reported through what's called the California School Dashboard, which helps to identify school strengths and areas of improvement. Health concerns arise as county plans to reopen South Bay campground Schools were selected based on the following indicators: demonstrating excellence and growth in academic achievement and ensuring a positive school climate. Additionally, CDE said schools recognized for closing the achievement gap 'enroll at least 40% of their students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and achieve accelerated academic growth for one or more historically underserved student groups.' Elementary, middle and high schools are recognized in alternate years, so awardees hold the title for two years. A total of 336 elementary schools across the Golden State were selected this year. A full list of those selected can be found here. While announcing the winners, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond said, 'Excellent elementary schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people. This year's California Distinguished Schools celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work of our elementary educators and school staff who help our students discover passions and experiences that will propel them.' 3 Bay Area Cal State schools to merge administrative services amid budget crunch

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco State University is one of three Bay Area Cal State schools that could merge administrative services with one another amid an ongoing budget crisis. In a letter to the campus community Tuesday, SFSU President Lynn Mahoney said the administration was 'working hard to align our costs with our budget and enrollment.' In addition to many cost-cutting measures the school had undertaken, 'we have also been looking for innovative ways to reduce expenses, particularly administration costs,' Mahoney went on to say. Mahoney went on to put forth a 'new effort toward financial sustainability' that Cal State University Chancellor Mildred Garcia had announced at Tuesday's board of trustees meeting. Mahoney explained that she, along with the presidents of Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State University had provided Garcia with a written commitment to 'create a singular administrative network.' Bay Area elementary schools make 2025 California Distinguished list The network, she explained, would integrate finance and administrative services including budget, audit, capital planning design and construction, human resources, payroll, procurement, IT, and academic technology. It would be called the San Francisco Bay Region Network. Additional services that could also be integrated under the network's umbrella include library services, Title IX/DHR operations, and some back-office financial aid, admissions, and records services. However, the universities would remain independent of one another, Mahoney maintained. 'Please be assured we are not proposing a merger of the three universities,' she said. 'Cal State East Bay, San Francisco State, and Sonoma State University will remain independently accredited universities.' SFSU does not plan to implement layoffs as a result of the integration, Mahoney said. 'Existing employees in administration and finance functions will be needed as part of the networked operation, campus-based service centers, and during the design and transition period,' she said. The proposed network, which Mahoney said is at the beginning stages, would not stave off any of the other budget reduction initiatives underway at the schools. Both SFSU and Sonoma State have recently announced sweeping cuts to their athletic programs, with Sonoma State doing away with theirs entirely. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Santa Rosa teen arrested for assaulting high school principal

(KRON) — A Santa Rosa teen was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly assaulting a high school principal near campus. According to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded around 9 a.m. to a report of a physical altercation near Roseland Collegiate Prep High School in Santa Rosa. Arriving on the scene, deputies detained a 17-year-old suspect who police say was a former student at the school. The teen, according to police, arrived on campus wearing a balaclava over his face. He was reportedly wandering around the campus, which raised concerns among school staff. Staff confronted the suspect, who left the campus. According to police, the suspect turned and attacked the principal. With the help of a bystander, the principal was able to subdue the suspect until deputies arrived. The principal sustained minor injuries during the assault. The student was arrested for misdemeanor charges of battery and battery on a school official. He was treated for minor injuries and given a citation before being released home to his mother. Deputies were unable to interview the suspect or inquire about his motives due to specific laws regarding juvenile arrestees. He was not armed with any weapons at the time and police say there are no indications he intended to cause any violence on campus. The incident was the latest in a series of violent campus incidents at Santa Rosa schools. On Wednesday, Santa Rosa Schools voted in favor of bringing school resource officers back to campus.
