Silchar's dumping ground set for Rs 22-crore makeover
Silchar: The infamous Meherpur dumping ground in Silchar — long associated with towering garbage heaps and civic neglect — is finally undergoing a long-awaited transformation.
Nearly two lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste is being cleared under a Rs 22 crore waste remediation and recovery project, one of the largest of its kind in Barak Valley, implemented under the
Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0
.
Supported by the ministry of development of north eastern region (DoNER), the project includes a Rs 6.92 crore material recovery facility and a Rs 15.06 crore legacy waste remediation initiative. Execution has been entrusted to Call and Fix, with the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) overseeing progress.
During a site visit on Wednesday, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty hailed the initiative as "a turning point for Silchar's urban future."
