Tom Brady gives positive assessment of Raiders rookie Cam Miller's NFL future: report

Former Boise State star running back Ashton Jeanty headlined the Las Vegas Raiders' 2025 NFL Draft class. But the franchise's sixth-round selection caught Tom Brady's eye. Cam Miller, who won two FCS national championships during his standout career at North Dakota State, was the 215th overall pick in last month's draft. Brady owns a minority ownership stake in the Raiders. The Athletic chronicled Brady's close relationship with Raiders general manager John Spytek. Brady's friendship with Spytek dates back to the University of Michigan. Spytek also worked in the Buccaneers' front office during Brady's time in Tampa Bay. Given the build-up of trust between Brady and Spytek, it stands to reason that the former NFL quarterback was on board with taking Miller on the third day of the draft. RANKING 2026 QB DRAFT CLASS: IS ARCH MANNING CLEAR-CUT NO. 1 OF A STACKED BUNCH? Spytek revealed that Brady provided a glowing assessment of Miller, saying, "He liked the way he threw it, his technique, throwing from the ground up and his motion." The Raiders general manager added that Brady was bullish on Miller's "potential to improve." Miller ended his four-year run at North Dakota State with a 45-11 record. He will enter a Raiders quarterback room that includes Geno Smith and Aidan O'Connell. The Raiders sent a third-round pick in the 2025 draft to the Seahawks in exchange for Smith. The move to Las Vegas brought Smith's five-year run with the Seahawks to an end. He was the primary starter for three of those seasons and earned Pro Bowl honors twice. Smith threw for 4,320 yards and 21 touchdowns with 15 interceptions last season and remains the favorite to be the starter when the Raiders open their season, even with the drafting of Miller. The Raiders finished 4-13 last season, which led to the departures of coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco. Pete Carroll, who coached Smith in Seattle, was named the Raiders' new head coach in January. Defensive end Maxx Crosby landed the richest contract for a non-quarterback in league history in March. ESPN reported his three-year extension is worth $106.5 million, with $91.5 million guaranteed. The deal ties Crosby to Las Vegas through the 2029 season. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Bobcats' Mellott, Grizzlies' Bergen drafted on Day 3

Apr. 27—First Tommy Mellott was picked by the Las Vegas Raiders. Then the Raiders took the man he beat out for the Walter Payton Award, Cam Miller, two picks later. That was in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, which concluded on Saturday; in the seventh round the San Francisco 49ers selected Montana receiver and return man Junior Bergen with the 252nd overall pick. Advertisement Mellott and Bergen were two of three Big Sky Conference players selected; in the fifth round (167th overall) the Tennessee Titans picked Jackson Slater, a guard out of Sacramento State. Mellott, who dazzled at his pro day with a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and a 41-inch vertical leap, is apparently going to be put at receiver with the Raiders. He played some of that for MSU and was also on special teams before suddenly taking over at quarterback for the Bobcats as a freshman in the 2021 playoffs. Four seasons later the Butte High product was voted the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Right behind in the voting was North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller. Mellott, who threw for 5,810 yards and rushed for 3,523 at MSU, is the 213rd overall pick. Miller, who led the Bison to a 45-11 record — including a 35-32 win over Mellott's Bobcats in the FCS title game in January — is the 215th pick. He'll stay at QB. Advertisement Bergen's selection came as the draft wound down. The Billings Senior product ended his career with eight punt return touchdowns, two coming on Nov. 30 in a playoff win over Tennessee State. Like Mellott he went through a position change; as a true freshman he was pressed into action as a running back. Now he and Mellott are headed to the NFL. It was thought more Big Sky players might get drafted, including Montana State's Marcus Wehr, who was rated among the top guards available. Wehr and other top players — UC Davis running back Lan Larison and Cal Poly defensive end Elijah Ponder, for example — will likely get free agent looks. Three more players with Big Sky roots were drafted. Running back Cam Skattebo, who began his career at Sacramento State and then starred at Arizona State, went in the fourth round to the New York Giants on Friday. He was the 105th overall pick and the eighth running back chosen. Advertisement Cornerback Marcus Harris, who transferred from Idaho to California to finish his standout career, went in the sixth round to the Titans. North Dakota State had three players drafted, starting with Grey Zabel, the 18th overall pick and the second offensive guard taken, by Seattle on Thursday. Safety Marques Sigle, who transferred from NDSU to Kansas State, went in the fifth round to the 49ers.

Raiders draft QB Cam Miller: How he fits, pick grade and scouting intel

The Las Vegas Raiders selected North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller with the No. 215 pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Raiders entered the weekend intent on bringing a developmental quarterback into the fold behind starter Geno Smith, whom they acquired this offseason in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. While they had plenty of opportunities earlier in the draft to bring in a player such as Colorado's Shedeur Sanders before finally going to the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round, the Raiders held tight and instead opted for the dual-threat Miller in the sixth round. Advertisement Miller helped lead North Dakota State to a pair of national championships in 2022 and 2024. He started 56 games over five seasons with the Bison, including 54 straight after taking over in the middle of his sophomore season in 2021. In his final season, he set career highs of 3,251 passing yards and 33 touchdowns against four interceptions. He also had 48 career rushing touchdowns. Miller ranked No. 251 in Dane Brugler's top 300 big board. Here's what Brugler had to say about him in his annual NFL Draft guide: 'Miller is an intelligent game manager who takes what the defense gives him and relies on timing and placement over pure arm power. The son of a football coach, his mental approach and on-field production showed improvements each season, although he will continue to have his doubters because of the level of competition he faced. Overall, Miller won't wow you right away because the physical traits are average. The more you watch, though, the more you come to appreciate his decision-making and feel for the position. He can be an asset in an NFL quarterback room as a reserve.' #Raiders added their QB in this class, the highly experienced, athletic and productive QB Cam Miller from NDSU. Miller is a three year starter who's a plus athlete and runner along with a highly efficient (4:1 TD to INT ratio) QB. At the @ShrineBowl Wilson Throwing Session,… — Eric Galko (@EricGalko) April 26, 2025 The Raiders clearly weren't enamored with this quarterback class and waited until the sixth round to draft the next Tom Brady. Unlike their minority owner, Miller moves pretty well. The 6-foot-1, 212-pound Miller was the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award for the top offensive player in FCS. Miller can throw on the run (3,251 yards and 33 touchdowns, with four interceptions) and find the end zone when he scrambles (12 touchdowns this season and 48 career rushing scores). Advertisement Can Miller push Aidan O'Connell for the backup job, or will he be a developmental No. 3 guy? He does seem a better fit for Chip Kelly's offense with his mobility. Miller started a lot of games in college and was praised for his poise, efficiency and leadership, so maybe this just might be an interesting training camp battle. The only name that jumps out at this point is Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers. He was expected to go much earlier in the draft — Brugler had him rated No. 86 overall — but was still on the board in the sixth round. While he has a cannon for an arm, he struggled to stay healthy in college, doesn't have much size and was never as consistent as you would've liked. Miller doesn't have nearly as much arm talent, but he's a much better athlete. That may have been the difference. Miller is the definition of a developmental backup. He's a complete non-threat to Geno Smith, but he can compete for a roster spot and potentially challenge Aidan O'Connell for the backup job. If he becomes a dependable backup, this pick is a win.
