Former Longhorns QB retires form football after an a seven year career

After a seven-year career, former Longhorns quarterback Cam Rising announced that he was retiring from football on Wednesday. In a statement on social media, he said he had been forced to stop playing due to a hand injury he sustained against Baylor during the 2024 campaign. His career, which included stops at two schools, was full of memorable moments. When Rising committed to Texas, he was ranked the 26th-best quarterback in the 2018 class. However, his time in Texas did not last long. He redshirted as a freshman before heading out west, transferring to Utah in 2019. Rising got more playing time in Utah, which was key to their success. With Rising under center, Utah won back-to-back Pac-12 conference championships in 2021 and 2022. They also made it to the Rose Bowl both years. During that stretch, the Newbury Park High School product recorded 5,527 passing yards and 46 touchdowns. Although Rising could not have asked for a better start to his Utah career, he struggled to stay on the field the last two years. An ACL injury sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. And then last year, a hand and leg injury kept him out all last season. Advertisement On social media, the former Longhorn took the time to thank those who have helped him in his career. Due to a hand injury I suffered during the Baylor game, I've been advised by two orthopedic physicians that I will never be able to return to football," Rising said. "I'll be obtaining a third medical opinion and will undergo surgery. I will continue to rehab and do all I can to get healthy. In the meantime, I will unfortunately be forced to medically retire from the game I love. As Rising begins life after football, he has plenty of memorable moments to look back on in Utah. Former Utah QB Cam Rising announces 'medical retirement' from football

Utah quarterback Cam Rising is giving up football — at least for the foreseeable future — because of his struggle to recover from a hand injury early last season. "I have been advised by two orthopedic surgeons that I will never be able to return to playing football," Rising wrote in a social media post on Wednesday in which he announced that he "will be forced to medically retire from the game I love." Rising added that he will seek a third medical opinion and proceed with recommended surgery and rehab, but stopped short of indicating that he foresees a path to playing again. Rising played parts of four seasons at Utah between 2020 and 2024. He passed for 2,493 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2021 and followed that up with 3,034 and 26 TDs in a 2022 season that landed the Utes in the Rose Bowl. But a knee injury in the bowl game sidelined Rising for all of 2023. The Ventura, California, native's return in 2024 was shortened against Baylor in the Utes' second game of the season, when he was pushed across the sideline as he released a throw and ran into a hydration table, appearing to jam his finger on a cooler. Rising tried to come back a little more than a month later, but struggled in a loss to Arizona State in October in which he was intercepted three times. He did not play again after that. Utah QB Cam Rising makes major announcement about his future

Cam Rising has officially announced his retirement from football on Wednesday. The Utah quarterback had the option of returning to school for another season, which would've been his eighth year in college football. However, a freak injury against Baylor ended his career with a hand injury. Advertisement 'Due to a hand injury I suffered during the Baylor game, I've been advised by two orthopedic physicians that I will never be able to return to playing football,' Rising said in a statement. 'I'll be obtaining a third medical opinion and will undergo the recommended surgery. I will continue to rehab and do all I can to get healthy. In the meantime, I will unfortunately be forced to medically retire from the game I love.' Rising was forced into a table at the Gatorade table in the September matchup vs. Baylor. He didn't return to the game. Rising returned in October and started a loss against Arizona State, but suffered a leg injury that ultimately sidelined him for the rest of the season. Rising was projected as a Heisman favorite in the 2024 offseason. He also had NFL buzz with hope riding into the season. He was the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2018, according to 247Sports.
