After a seven-year career, former Longhorns quarterback Cam Rising announced that he was retiring from football on Wednesday. In a statement on social media, he said he had been forced to stop playing due to a hand injury he sustained against Baylor during the 2024 campaign. His career, which included stops at two schools, was full of memorable moments.
When Rising committed to Texas, he was ranked the 26th-best quarterback in the 2018 class. However, his time in Texas did not last long. He redshirted as a freshman before heading out west, transferring to Utah in 2019. Rising got more playing time in Utah, which was key to their success.
With Rising under center, Utah won back-to-back Pac-12 conference championships in 2021 and 2022. They also made it to the Rose Bowl both years. During that stretch, the Newbury Park High School product recorded 5,527 passing yards and 46 touchdowns.
Although Rising could not have asked for a better start to his Utah career, he struggled to stay on the field the last two years. An ACL injury sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. And then last year, a hand and leg injury kept him out all last season.
On social media, the former Longhorn took the time to thank those who have helped him in his career.
Due to a hand injury I suffered during the Baylor game, I've been advised by two orthopedic physicians that I will never be able to return to football," Rising said. "I'll be obtaining a third medical opinion and will undergo surgery. I will continue to rehab and do all I can to get healthy. In the meantime, I will unfortunately be forced to medically retire from the game I love.
As Rising begins life after football, he has plenty of memorable moments to look back on in Utah.

Maye added that he's been able to see some of Diggs' work ethic in action. 'In the meetings, [he's] asking questions, asking me after plays, 'Hey, what should I have done there? Hey, in the past, I've done this when the guy's playing this leverage,' stuff like that,' Maye said. 'He's seen a lot of different things, played a long time in this league. It's been great for me. A veteran receiver, him, Mack [Hollins], Kendrick Bourne. We got three, not really old heads, but old heads in their 30s. It's been awesome for us to find how they lead the room and help this offense.' Last season, Diggs caught 47 passes for 496 yards with three touchdowns in eight games for Houston.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has reported that, barring a bad physical, the former All-Pro running back is expected to sign with the Houston Texans on Monday. This comes after Chubb suffered season-ending injuries in back-to-back seasons to end his time in Cleveland. This includes a devastating tear of his ACL and MCL in 2023. The writing was on the wall in Cleveland at the end of April. The Browns drafted not one, but two running backs in the middle rounds of the 2025 NFL draft. They used a top-40 pick on Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins, then turned around to use their fourth round pick on Tennessee's Dylan Sampson. The Browns also renegotiated the final year of Jerome Ford's contract to lower his base salary, effectively securing his roster spot. If he can meet expectations, his career in Austin will be full of unforgettable kicks. Texas begins its regular season against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 30.
