Flawless Feeney too fast for Waters in Perth pole chase
Supercars championship leader Broc Feeney has flaunted blistering pace to claim pole position for the final sprint in Perth. Cam Waters looked to be in the box seat for pole after setting the pace with a lap time of 54.9104 seconds as the fourth driver in Sunday's top-10 shootout at Wanneroo Raceway. But Feeney was flawless and blitzed his Tickford rival by 0.2079 seconds as the final driver to have a solo attempt. The 22-year-old will be out to claim back-to-back wins after snaring his sixth pole of the season and No.14 of his career. Triple Eight teammate Will Brown was third fastest and will share the second row with Grove Racing's Matt Payne. Ryan Wood was the fifth driver to have a solo attempt at Wanneroo Raceway and qualified in seventh. On Saturday, the Walkinshaw Andretti United youngster broke through for an emotional maiden Supercars win, before a suspension failure ended his bid for two consecutive victories. Meanwhile, Wood's teammate Chaz Mostert will struggle to back up his podium efforts after qualifying in 14th. Mostert finished third in the opening two sprints. "One day, you're right smack bang in the middle and you're happy as, and one day you're just a little bit out of it," he said. "Not really sure what to think about that." Local product Brodie Kostecki's hopes for a home race victory were dashed when a poor qualifying effort condemned him to 15th. Kostecki finished the two opening sprints in Perth in fifth and seventh. The final sprint in Perth starts at 5.15pm (AEST). RACE 16 TOP-10 SHOOTOUT RESULTS: 1. Broc Feeney (Triple Eight Race Engineering) 2. Cam Waters (Tickford Racing) 3. Will Brown (Triple Eight) 4. Waters pips Feeney in thrilling Supercars photo-finish
Cam Waters has sensationally pipped Supercars rival Broc Feeney in the final seconds of the Sydney 500 to emerge victorious in the second sprint race of the season. After losing his lead following a PremiAir Nulon Racing car fire early in Saturday's 200km sprint, pole-sitter Waters pulled off a masterclass drive to prevail at Sydney Motorsport Park. Feeney was able to jump ahead of Waters after his rival, on his way to leave, was stuck behind a pitting Will Brown. Richie Stanaway's Chevrolet Camaro had caught on fire after a suspected engine failure, allowing the 25-strong grid to take an opportunistic pit stop under a safety car. Waters then suffered another poorly executed garage visit and dropped out of the top four. But the Tickford star refused to throw in the towel. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS?!?!?!Cam Waters wins in Sydney!! #RepcoSC #Supercars — Supercars (@supercars) February 22, 2025 Overtaking competition heavyweights Will Brown and Chaz Mostert, Waters caught up to Feeney with six laps to go. He sent Feeney off the track at turn four, allowing defending champion Brown into the top spot. Brown lost the lead as Waters gave up his spot in an attempt to redress for his Feeney bump. Let off the hook by race stewards and helped by a slipstream, Waters went full-throttle as the finish line approached. He won by 0.0308 seconds. Enjoying his 17th career win from his 31st pole position, Waters leads the championship by 37 points. RACE TWO RESULTS: 1. Cam Waters (Tickford Racing) 2. Watch A Supercar Get Flogged On The Dirt Track
Read the full story on Backfire News Normally, we see Supercars Championship events held on pavement and for good reason. But just for some good fun, drivers Cam Waters and Thomas Randle treated some fans to a fun session where they took a Supercar out onto a dirt track and tried pushing the were afraid this kind of stunt would end in tragedy. Spoiler alert: it doesn't, but a few times it looked a little close. The two were at Sydney International Speedway, hitting the clay there for an unusual event someone thankfully had the foresight to film and upload to YouTube so the rest of us could enjoy. The Ford Mustang Supercar sure sounds great, but it clearly struggled for traction in the dirt. After all, it has the wrong tires for the slippery surface. Plus, rear-wheel-drive on anything with sub-optimal traction is going to be a challenge. But it looked like they had some fun. At first they took it easy, probably getting a feel for how the Supercar would handle the surface. Then the started to lay on the accelerator more. But you can hear in the footage how the driver gets off the pedal a lot, especially through the turns. Still, the Ford almost kissed the wall, or at least got fairly close (it's hard to tell for sure from the angle this was filmed), at least a few times. The crowd sure seemed to love the spectacle and who can blame them? How often do you get to see a Supercar whip around a dirt oval? Thankfully, someone on the crew thought to raise the front splitter as well as the whole ride height of the Supercar, otherwise it would've just been plowing through the dirt. That would've been entertaining for a few seconds, but seeing them really try to go for it on the slippery surface was more entertaining. Image via Speedcafe/YouTube
