Waters pips Feeney in thrilling Supercars photo-finish
Cam Waters has sensationally pipped Supercars rival Broc Feeney in the final seconds of the Sydney 500 to emerge victorious in the second sprint race of the season.
After losing his lead following a PremiAir Nulon Racing car fire early in Saturday's 200km sprint, pole-sitter Waters pulled off a masterclass drive to prevail at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Feeney was able to jump ahead of Waters after his rival, on his way to leave, was stuck behind a pitting Will Brown.
Richie Stanaway's Chevrolet Camaro had caught on fire after a suspected engine failure, allowing the 25-strong grid to take an opportunistic pit stop under a safety car.
Waters then suffered another poorly executed garage visit and dropped out of the top four.
But the Tickford star refused to throw in the towel.

Overtaking competition heavyweights Will Brown and Chaz Mostert, Waters caught up to Feeney with six laps to go.
He sent Feeney off the track at turn four, allowing defending champion Brown into the top spot.
Brown lost the lead as Waters gave up his spot in an attempt to redress for his Feeney bump.
Let off the hook by race stewards and helped by a slipstream, Waters went full-throttle as the finish line approached.
He won by 0.0308 seconds.
Enjoying his 17th career win from his 31st pole position, Waters leads the championship by 37 points.

Ford and Chevrolet split Supercars wins at Wanneroo
Ford and Chevrolet have split the wins in the two opening races of the Wanneroo Raceway Supercars round, near Perth in Western Australia. Ryan Wood took his maiden Supercars victory in his Walkinshaw Andretti United Ford Mustang before Broc Feeney struck back for Triple Eight to win the second race in his Chevrolet Camaro. Advertisement Much of Saturday looked like it belonged to Wood. He took the lead in the opening race from WAU team-mate (and polesitter) Chaz Mostert after 10 laps and resisted the pressure from both of Triple Eight's drivers, first Feeney, who undercut him in the pits, and then Will Brown, whose four-tyre pitstop gave him an advantage over Wood, who took just two at his mandatory pitstop. But the 21-year-old New Zealander kept his cool and sped home to his maiden Supercars win, from Brown and Mostert. The second race was looking like going the same way. Wood was beaten away from pole position by a fast-starting Cam Waters (Tickford Racing Ford) and Matt Payne (Grove Racing Ford) but Wood picked them off and built a gap, only to have the left-rear suspension break as he braked for Turn 6. All the cars were racing on the Dunlop Super Soft control tyre for the first time at the usually abrasive 2.41km circuit. One condition that many of the drivers pointed to was that the Super Soft tyre left a huge amount of buildup on the track compared to the Soft, turning much of the circuit into a single-line track. Newly dyed blond Chaz Mostert wants to thank the internet trolls for powering him to pole position for the opening Supercars sprint in Perth. Sporting the bleached hair at Wanneroo Raceway, Mostert blitzed the pack by 0.083 seconds to snare the top spot for the first of two 120km races on Saturday. He leads a front row lockout by Walkinshaw Andretti United, joined by young teammate Ryan Wood. Wood snared a maiden pole for Saturday's second sprint, followed by Tickford ace Cam Waters and third-fastest Broc Feeney. Mostert claimed his first pole of the season and career No.26 with a lap time of 53.6858 seconds. Brodie Kostecki was third-fastest and will share the second row with championship leader Feeney. With only one win to his name this year, Mostert will be out to reignite his championship hunt. The 33-year-old is fifth in the standings. "It's (Perth) just so far away from anything, so it feels like home," Wood joked. Fellow Kiwi and Grove Racing driver Payne qualified fifth and fourth respectively.
