Masterful Mostert fends off Kostecki for Supercars win

Supercars championship contender Chaz Mostert has pulled off a masterful drive in New Zealand to outpace a red-hot Brodie Kostecki and claim the second Taupo 440 sprint. Left smarting after finishing a frustrating 13th earlier on Saturday, Walkinshaw Andretti United ace Mostert got the jump on pole-sitter Kostecki in the second 120km race of the day on his way to career win No.25. But his win did not come easy. Kostecki remained dogged throughout the 37-lap race, trading leads with Mostert before a brief dip off-track late in the sprint eventually forced him to give up top spot. "I raced as hard as I could," Mostert said. "I knew he had the better pace, so I had to be super aggressive ... or I wasn't going to have a chance to sit here (on top) today." Kostecki gave up even more ground after suffering damage as a result of his run-ins with Mostert, but recovered to finish third. Dick Johnson Racing teammate Will Davison was second, as Triple Eight heavyweight Broc Feeney, battling to master the new soft tyre compound, tumbled out of the top three. It is Supercars veteran Davison's first podium finish in a year, last finishing in the top three in the inaugural Taupo race last season. He said his Saturday outing with Kostecki is only a glimpse of what is to come from the pair. "It's real," Davison said. "At certain times of every weekend this year, I've felt, like, mega glimmers with the car and its potential. "Such a big drive by Brodie. Such an amazing teammate, such an amazing driver for me now to keep digging deep, keep me on my toes as the old boy." His teammate and defending champion Will Brown also struggled with the new tyre, finishing seventh. Brown at least returned to the top of the series standings, with Tickford rival Cam Waters finishing 14th. New Zealand's Matt Payne, after claiming a first win on home soil in the opening sprint of the weekend, crossed the finish line in fourth. He had earlier on Saturday led from start to finish in the opening sprint race to claim his third career win from his third career pole. Waters was the beneficiary of pit-lane chaos and finished second to momentarily return to the top of the competition. Young Kiwi driver Ryan Wood overtook Team 18's Anton De Pasquale in the penultimate lap to finish third and secure his first Supercars podium. A You-Gotta-See-to-Believe Australian Supercars Finish, Cam Waters Wins by.03 Seconds

In the second race of Supercars opening round in Sydney, Cam Waters and Broc Feeney combined for one of the best finishes in modern Supercars, with Waters passing Feeney in the final corner and beating him to the line by just.03 seconds. Waters won Friday night's race and topped Saturday's qualifying to put him in the catbird's seat for a second time. He lost positions early in the 200km race and had to fight back to battle among the podium finers. With four laps to go, Waters made a pass on Feeney and spun the Red Bull driver; instead of facing a possible penalty, Waters redressed and gave the position back under the cover of night. WOW! "It's pretty hard in the dark because you can't really see how far away cars are compared to the daytime," Waters said in the post-race press conference. "I wasn't really sure how far behind Will was; I knew I had to redress Broc just to make sure I didn't get a penalty. I wasn't sure if I was going to get a penalty or not, but I didn't want that hanging over my head." The three drivers stayed single final until the final turn and straightaway, where Waters pulled out to make the pass for the lead. The trio combined for Australia Supercars' closest finish in the series history. Supercars stars keen to add aggression in title hunt

Supercars drivers are set to dial up on-track aggression on the road to a new-look finals series after Cam Waters set the tone at the Sydney 500. Waters put Triple Eight rival Broc Feeney to the sword at Sydney Motorsport Park on Saturday to emerge victorious by a staggeringly narrow 0.0308-second buffer. Pole-sitter Waters pulled off a sensational drive to run down Feeney, having lost the lead when Richie Stanaway's PremiAir Nulon Racing car caught fire early in Saturday's 200km sprint. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS?!?!?!Cam Waters wins in Sydney!! #RepcoSC #Supercars — Supercars (@supercars) February 22, 2025 On his way back to the top, Waters sent Feeney off the track at turn four as reigning champion Will Brown momentarily surged into the lead. Waters redressed the incident by giving up his spot and was cleared of fault by race stewards, before running into Feeney's rear bar in the final lap. The Tickford driver then copped a bump from Brown before crossing the finish line first for his second-consecutive win of the weekend thanks to a slipstream. Triple Eight driver Brown finished third. "I wasn't sure if I was going to get a penalty or not, but I didn't want to have that hanging over my head, so I just rolled out of it," Waters said. WOW! There's contact for the lead but Race Control has let it play out!Follow all the action from the Thrifty Sydney 500 with our Live Feed here 👉 #Supercars — Supercars (@supercars) February 22, 2025 While agreeing the late-stage drag race made for a thrilling end, Feeney said the inaction from race stewards over Waters's bump has created confusion for drivers. Aggression will be key for the championship hunt after the introduction of an elimination series in a major format revamp for the 2025 season. Series titles will no longer be won based on points accumulation, with the standings to be reset between the three finals rounds. The new NASCAR-inspired format will also progressively cut the 24-strong grid down to four drivers. "We've still got that cloud over us, like with contact does there come a penalty?" Feeney said. "With finals coming in, there's been a lot of talk and over the last couple of years about how they want the rules to go for racing. "We're going nearly more and more NASCAR-style where in general, you can sort of rub up a little bit more. "I'm sure everyone in here agrees that's probably one of the best races there's been in a while in Supercars and it came with a lot of running into each other." Feeney's teammate Brown echoed his sentiments. "It is a bit of a grey area now," Brown said. "The race was so exciting tonight, you don't want to penalise anyone. It would've been very disappointing after the race "But also, if you're doing that from fifth place now, are they going to penalise you? "That's the hardest thing right now - for us going into the rest of the season, can you get away with that every day?" Drivers return to the track on Sunday for the final sprint race of the Sydney 500 at 4.05pm (AEDT).

Waters pips Feeney in thrilling Supercars photo-finish

Cam Waters has sensationally pipped Supercars rival Broc Feeney in the final seconds of the Sydney 500 to emerge victorious in the second sprint race of the season. After losing his lead following a PremiAir Nulon Racing car fire early in Saturday's 200km sprint, pole-sitter Waters pulled off a masterclass drive to prevail at Sydney Motorsport Park. Feeney was able to jump ahead of Waters after his rival, on his way to leave, was stuck behind a pitting Will Brown. Richie Stanaway's Chevrolet Camaro had caught on fire after a suspected engine failure, allowing the 25-strong grid to take an opportunistic pit stop under a safety car. Waters then suffered another poorly executed garage visit and dropped out of the top four. But the Tickford star refused to throw in the towel. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS?!?!?!Cam Waters wins in Sydney!! #RepcoSC #Supercars — Supercars (@supercars) February 22, 2025 Overtaking competition heavyweights Will Brown and Chaz Mostert, Waters caught up to Feeney with six laps to go. He sent Feeney off the track at turn four, allowing defending champion Brown into the top spot. Brown lost the lead as Waters gave up his spot in an attempt to redress for his Feeney bump. Let off the hook by race stewards and helped by a slipstream, Waters went full-throttle as the finish line approached. He won by 0.0308 seconds. Enjoying his 17th career win from his 31st pole position, Waters leads the championship by 37 points. RACE TWO RESULTS: 1. Cam Waters (Tickford Racing) 2.
