What I'm hearing about Cam York and other Flyers offseason storylines
Noah Cates and Tyson Foerster, key Philadelphia Flyers pending restricted free agents, have been re-signed to what seem like reasonable contract extensions. Cates inked a four-year, $16 million deal on June 3, while Foerster agreed to a two-year, $7.5 million extension on May 29. Both are viewed internally as key pieces of the core group moving forward. Advertisement But now, attention now turns toward another potential core piece: defenseman Cam York, 24, also a pending restricted free agent. The Flyers have been tight-lipped about contract talks since the new management group took over. General manager Daniel Briere seemingly has made it a priority to not negotiate deals through the media, as evidenced by the Cates and Foerster announcements coming without any notice, just as the eight-year Owen Tippett extension did on Jan. 26, 2024. But a source close to York told The Athletic this week that the club and the player are still having conversations, which began last month. Both a short-term deal and a longer-team deal are still in play. We also know, as reported here previously, is that the Flyers and York had contract discussions in the early part of last season before they broke off in late November. In other words, and with the caveat that it could change any at moment, it's been a drawn-out process. And, it suggests that the Flyers and York finding common ground has been a complicated task — much more so than it was with Cates and Foerster. Perhaps that's no surprise. It was, to put it mildly, an odd season for York, who finished the 2023-24 season as arguably the Flyers' best defenseman over the final couple of months but saw his production drop from 30 points in 82 games last season to 17 points in 66 games in 2024-25. A shoulder injury on Oct. 26 forced him from the lineup for approximately one month and adversely affected his game after he returned. As York acknowledged in March: 'It was tough at the beginning (after the injury) to get adjusted and feel comfortable with it.' But, York's struggles after his injury lasted longer than anyone would have liked — particularly then-coach John Tortorella. And, in that vein, there's reason to believe that there may not be a player on the Flyers' roster who will benefit more from a coaching change to Rick Tocchet than York. Advertisement Part of the reason York's production dropped this season is because of the coaching staff's odd, steadfast refusal to put him on the power play, which finished 30th in the league. While defenseman such as Emil Andrae, Egor Zamula and Rasmus Ristolainen got long looks on the top unit, York skated less than 10 minutes on the power play for the entire season. York was scratched twice by Tortorella, too, on Dec. 19 and March 8. After the second scratching, York bemoaned the lack of communication from the coach. And, of course, there was the incident in Toronto with Tortorella that seemingly hastened the coach's dismissal just two days later. York's punishment for that, as issued by Briere, was to dress for a game on March 27 — the first under interim coach Brad Shaw — without taking a single shift. It was a stunning public embarrassment, although York said all the right things in his first media availability after everything transpired. But, after the season, York also acknowledged that after Shaw took over, he was 'able to play with a little bit more freedom. … As a player, that's everything, in a way.' Perhaps the Flyers want to see a little more from York, and how he performs under Tocchet, before committing to him long term. Some other odds and ends: • A team source rejected any suggestion that the Flyers might be interested in a trade for Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague — who, like York, is left-handed but who has much greater size (6-foot-6, 245 pounds). Don't expect the Flyers to be involved in discussions about Hague moving forward. • Multiple team sources said they had no knowledge of any deal with 24-year-old forward prospect Maxim Shabanov. A report out of Russia last week indicated the Flyers had signed Shabanov out of the KHL. One of the sources, though, indicated that the club remains very interested in adding him and they are hopeful it will happen. Advertisement So, who is Shabanov? Here's Corey Pronman's assessment of him from February: 'Shabanov has been one of the top scorers in the KHL this season as a 24-year-old. He's an excellent skater with the speed and edge work of an NHL player. He has good puck skills and offensive sense, and makes a lot of plays at full speed. Shabanov is also a mid-range shooting threat who can score goals versus good goaltenders. The issue with him will come down to size. He's about 5-foot-8 and, while talented, it's debatable whether it's the special variety of talent you need at his size to make it to the top league.' • A team source reiterated that the club is not going to be in the market for any big-money free agents this summer. So, no, the Flyers will not be pursuing Mitch Marner. As for Sam Bennett, I do believe the Flyers would have been interested had Bennett not gone on another remarkable playoff run. As it stands now, they figure he'll probably be out of their price range. • The Flyers will be adding another assistant coach to Tocchet's staff, which now includes Jaroslav Svejkovsky and Jay Varady. But they're in no rush to do so. Don't expect that to happen until July. (Photo of Cam York: Emilee Chinn / Getty Images)

Philadelphia Flyers eye trade for Golden Knights' Nicolas Hague amid Cam York contract impasse
Photo by Andy Devlin/NHLI via Getty Images The NHL offseason is heating up, and the Philadelphia Flyers might be ready to make a significant move to bolster their blue line. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman via NHL Rumor Report, Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague has emerged as a trade target for the Flyers. The 6-foot-6 blueliner offers the kind of physical presence Philadelphia has been lacking — and with Cam York's contract situation in limbo, a shake-up on the back end could be coming sooner rather than later. Philadelphia Flyers reportedly targeting Golden Knights' defenseman Nicolas Hague The Philadelphia Flyers have been exploring a potential 'hockey trade' for some time — a deal that helps both teams improve in areas of need without diving into full-on rebuild mode. With extension talks between the Flyers and RFA defenseman Cam York seemingly at a standstill, rumors of a potential trade are gaining momentum. Enter Nicolas Hague . The 26-year-old pending RFA fits the mold of what Flyers GM Daniel Brière has repeatedly emphasized: size, grit, and playoff durability on the blue line. With York, Jamie Drysdale, and Emil Andrae all listed at or under six feet tall, the addition of a towering defender like Hague would address the team's urgent need for more physicality on the back end. Vegas, on the other hand, faces cap constraints with just $9.6 million in space and several key forwards to re-sign, including Reilly Smith, Brandon Saad, Tanner Pearson, Victor Olofsson, and Alex Holtz. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Hague's name has come up in trade rumors frequently, and this may be the window where the Golden Knights look to move him to free up salary. Brink, despite being just 5-foot-8, put up a career-high 41 points last season and carries a team-friendly $1.5 million cap hit for one more year. As July 1 free agency nears, all eyes are on the Flyers' next move. If Cam York's extension talks don't progress, Nicolas Hague appears to be at the top of Philadelphia's contingency list. A potential deal could give both teams exactly what they need — and shake up two NHL blue lines in the process. Also Read: Top NHL prospect Matthew Schaefer returns from injury ahead of 2025 draft

Sharks Should Target RFA Defender Cam York This Offseason
The San Jose Sharks could look to make some additions to their roster this summer, and while they may not have the future assets to make a trade that turns them from rebuilder to contender right away, there are some free agents available that could be enticing to them. One of them is Philadelphia Flyers' defender Cam York, who is a pending restricted free agent (RFA) and, after some drama during the season with their former head coach John Tortorella, York could be interested in a change of scenery. While the Flyers decided to move on from Tortorella and brought in Rick Tocchet, it's possible the altercation could have left a sour taste in York's mouth, and he would be interested in playing for another team instead of staying with the Flyers. If that's the case, the Sharks should be all over him. York, who is 24 years old, scored four goals and added 13 assists for 17 points through 66 games this season. Throughout his short career so far, he has scored 19 goals and added 58 assists for 77 points through 235 games, which comes out to a 0.33 points-per-game average. York's defensive ability makes him an enticing addition to any team looking to add to their defensive depth, and considering how weak the Sharks' blue line was last season, they could benefit from adding York to their lineup. I doubt the Sharks look to go the offer sheet direction, and would prefer to make a trade at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft or even in the days leading up to free agency, and the asking price likely wouldn't be outrageous. I would assume the Flyers would look for a future second-round pick in return, which the Sharks should have no issue trading for a player like York. In an increased role, which he would get with the Sharks, he could build some confidence and finally break out into the potential star defender that fans expected when he got drafted by the Flyers.
