Cambria County Veterans Memorial Museum looking for Civil War, Spanish-American War items
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Cambria County Veterans Memorial Museum officials are seeking artifacts from the Civil War and Spanish-American War.
The museum, located inside 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial, is a repository for local military history, but has very little from the 19th century when those conflicts occurred. The organization relies on donations of items to grow its collection.
'We've never really had much of the Civil War, let's face it, the Spanish-American War,' said Marty Kuhar, head of the Cambria County War Memorial Authority's veterans committee.
'So yeah, we're always looking because mostly what we have is World War II, Vietnam.
'The more we can gather, we can use it.'
Any donated items from those wars could be used as part of the museum's displays.
'We're just trying to expand what we have in the museum,' Kuhar said following the authority's regular monthly meeting Monday. 'The museum is great as it is, but we want to make it more theme-orientated. This is Civil War stuff, this is World War I stuff, right up and down the line.
During the meeting, Kuhar also provided an update about the annual Vietnam Era Veterans Recognition Day.
The event is scheduled to take place at the War Memorial from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. March 27, with a brief ceremony set for 10 a.m.
The annual gathering is sponsored by Veteran Community Initiatives, Conemaugh Valley Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 364 and Disabled American Veterans Johnstown Chapter 2.
