'We deserved something'

Oxford boss Gary Rowett felt his side could have taken a point from the 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth - and did not blame Cameron Brannagan for his error that led to the only Brannagan lost the ball in the build-up to Adrian Segecic's said: "It was one mistake and that was the main factor in the game."Other than that Portsmouth edged the game without creating a lot of moments, but one mistake gives them that little bit of impetus to hold on to, and they defended well."The last 20 minutes was exactly what you would hope - there was more of an edge to us and more quality, there were some great balls in the box and more shots."From that last 20 minutes I thought we deserved something from the game."

United begin season with home defeat against Portsmouth

OXFORD United began the new season with a 1-0 defeat at home against Portsmouth in what was at times a feisty encounter. The only goal of the match came seven minutes before half-time, when Adrian Segecic, a summer signing from Sydney FC, capitalised on an earlier mistake from Cameron Brannagan. The headline team news for United was that summer signing Brian De Keersmaecker had suffered a training ground knock which is set to rule him out for the next couple of weeks. Gary Rowett made three changes to the side which won 3-0 against Malaga in the final game of pre-season, with De Keersmaecker one of those. Sam Long and Matt Phillips dropped to the bench, as Elliott Moore, Will Vaulks and Tottenham Hotspur loanee Will Lankshear came into the side. As for the visitors, former U's winger Josh Murphy was unavailable and not selected in the matchday squad. The first sight of goal came with 12 minutes on the clock, as Stan Mills intercepted a loose pass and bombed forward down the right-hand side. He fed Mark Harris, who aimed towards the near post from a tight angle, but the effort was saved low by Nicolas Schmid. At the other end, a moment of hesitation from Brodie Spencer allowed Callum Lang to get a pass through for Florian Bianchini, who shot straight at Jamie Cumming. Just after the midway point of the first half, Vaulks launched one of his trademark long throws into the penalty area, and following an almighty scramble inside the six-yard box, Schmid was able to claim the ball. A clever ball from Lankshear found Brannagan, who charged down the left channel and stung the gloves of Schmid at the near post. Seven minutes before the break, Pompey took the lead following a costly Brannagan mistake. The midfielder played a sloppy back pass which allowed Colby Bishop to get in front of Michal Helik and go through on goal. Cumming made a superb save to deny Bishop, however the loose ball landed nicely at the feet of Segecic, who opened the scoring with a neat first-time finish. Two minutes before half-time, United were aggrieved that a penalty wasn't awarded when Mills was nudged in the back, however referee Dean Whitestone was unmoved. The last action of the first half saw Segecic unleash a wicked 25-yard strike with his left foot, however Cumming was equal to it and made a strong save. Five minutes into the second period, a fizzing low ball from Mills tested Schmid at his near post, but the resulting corner came to nothing for the U's. The impressive Segecic drifted infield into the box and smashed a left-footed effort over the crossbar, as the Pompey debutant looked for his brace. United were forced into a change when captain Moore took a whack and was replaced by Hidde ter Avest. Spencer moved inside to centre half, with ter Avest lining up at right back. Further alterations saw Jack Currie and Siriki Dembele replace Greg Leigh and Harris respectively. The U's couldn't make it click though going forward, and rolled the dice for the last time with nine minutes left on the clock, as Louie Sibley and Tom Bradshaw replaced Vaulks and Lankshear. As the clash went into the 90th minute, Currie forced Schmid into an excellent save with a strike from the edge of the box, and then after eight minutes of stoppage time were signalled, Sibley blazed narrowly over with a left-footed half-volley. Oxford United (4-4-2): Cumming; Spencer, Moore (ter Avest 66), Helik, Leigh (Currie 69); Mills, Vaulks (Sibley 81), Brannagan, Goodrham (O'Donkor 87); M Harris (Dembele 69), Lankshear (Bradshaw 81). Why U's fans shouldn't be fearful of midfield ace ‘transfer rumours'

AS another summer transfer window rolls back around, there are few Oxford United players who create more speculation than Cameron Brannagan. The U's midfield maestro has reportedly gained more interest from a trio of Sky Bet Championship clubs since the end of the 2024/25 campaign, leading to renewed summer speculation surrounding his future. Leicester City, Sheffield United and Stoke City have all apparently expressed their interest in tempting Brannagan away from the Kassam Stadium, however for now, the speculation appears to be nothing more than that. After playing a key role in the Championship throughout the season, United fans can be reassured about Brannagan's future as he looks towards a fresh campaign. Another statement of Brannagan's intent was mapped out in July 2023, launching the Cam Brannagan Football Academy with fellow teammate Simon Eastwood. Brannagan came up with the idea with the U's goalkeeper on a car journey home and now oversees about 300 children at six different locations in what has been a resounding success across Oxfordshire, with sessions at Abingdon, Bicester and Kidlington. Only in October, Brannagan said: 'This is where I see myself for the rest of my life, never mind the next couple of years.' And even as recently as the end of April, Brannagan stated: 'Keep writing us off, and me being optimistic, and me wanting to push for the Premier League, I've said that I want to push for the Premier League, and I stand by that.' READ AGAIN: Midfielder restates Premier League ambition with Oxford United After a famous promotion to the Championship under the Wembley arch last May, the midfielder said United should look to aspire to the example of Ipswich Town. With one of the smallest budgets in the division, the U's exceeded expectations of many outsider opinions to actually survive the drop this season. However, with previous head coach Des Buckingham dubbing him 'one of the best players in League One', Brannagan put pen to paper, undoubtedly propelling the club into a better position with the number eight staying. The 29-year-old started 33 times for United this season, assisting four times and scoring three goals including a staggering long-range strike away at Cardiff City in a crucial relegation six-pointer. After suffering a knee injury which saw him sidelined for just over two months during the early stages of the season, Brannagan will hope he can enjoy a less interrupted year with the U's as they look to build on their solid first season back in the second tier for 25 years.

Midfielder's 35-yard rocket snubbed for goal of the month

CAMERON Brannagan has been snubbed for the Sky Bet Championship goal of the month award for April. The Oxford United midfielder was named on a four-man shortlist for his 35-yard rocket which rescued a point at Cardiff City on Easter Monday. United were 1-0 down approaching the final 10 minutes when a central free kick was awarded 35 yards from goal. Tyler Goodrham touched the ball for Brannagan to run onto, and the 29-year-old unleashed a powerful rising effort which flew past Ethan Horvath in the Bluebirds goal. WOW! 🤯 An absolute ROCKET from Oxford United's Cameron Brannagan! 🚀 — Sky Sports Football (@SkyFootball) April 21, 2025 Brannagan though has missed out to Sunderland forward Eliezer Mayenda, who scored a solo effort in a 2-1 loss at Bristol City. Mayenda opened the scoring just after half an hour had been played when he collected the ball outside his own penalty area, skipped past a couple of challenges and raced up the pitch into the Robins box, where he fizzed in a strike. WOW! This solo effort from Sunderland's Eliezer Mayenda 😮‍💨 — Sky Sports Football (@SkyFootball) April 18, 2025 Swansea City right back Josh Key for his 30-yard strike against Plymouth Argyle and Coventry City attacker Jamie Paterson for his stoppage time half-volley in a 1-0 win against Portsmouth were both also nominated for the award. Online votes from fans were combined with the choices from a panel to determine the winner.

READ ALSO: U's boss gives update on future of Chelsea loanee Brannagan previously said on the wonder strike: 'It was a very special moment and a long time coming. 'I'm a bit frustrated with my knee and not being able to properly strike through a ball over the past couple of weeks or months maybe. 'It's frustrating but all the frustration came out in that strike to be honest. I hit it lovely and celebrating in front of the fans was a special feeling.' Brannagan is nominated alongside Swansea City right back Josh Key for his 30-yard strike against Plymouth Argyle, attacker Jamie Paterson's stoppage time half-volley in Coventry City's 1-0 win against Portsmouth, and Sunderland forward Eliezer Mayenda's solo effort at Bristol City.
