10 Things I Still Love About "10 Things I Hate About You"

I'm going on the record to say that 10 Things I Hate About You is one of the best teen rom-coms. Ever. The cast (Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union), the soundtrack (Save Ferris, Letters to Cleo, Semisonic), the witty dialogue ("Whoops? My insurance doesn't cover PMS!"), are but a few of the reasons why I love this film. So, to honor 10 Things I Hate About You, I decided to share 10 things I LOVE about the film. The fact that this movie is only 97 minutes: Especially in these times, when we have movies over three hours long — SOME EVEN HAVE INTERMISSIONS. The art of the under-100-minute-movie is truly lost. However, I could watch 100,000 minutes of Patrick Verona's smile. Kat and Patrick's chemistry: HOT HOT HOT! I know that their relationship started off inauthentic, but my, my, was it worth the heartbreak. The entire sequence of Patrick serenading Kat with "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" on the bleachers in front of the entire school is one of the most romantic gestures I've ever seen in a film. Cameron's tenacity: Cameron is the epitome of "if he wanted to, he would!" He heard that Bianca wasn't allowed to date until her sister did and took matters into his own hands and — sure, there was the lil' Joey Donner blip in there, but, at the end of the day, Cameron got the girl! Cameron and Michael's friendship: Michael was Cameron's wingman, even when he thought Bianca wasn't worth all the trouble Cameron was going through. Did Michael complain? A little! But he stood by his friend and helped him get the girl. Also, upon rewatch, I've decided we as a society do not talk enough about how plugged in Michael was! He knew who everyone was and who they hung out with, he knew that Joey Donner was the one they need for their pay-for-date scheme, he's even the one who set Cameron up with Bianca initially because he knew she needed a French tutor. Michael is the man to know at Padua High! Nigel's commitment to the brie: Not even a pack of rowdy teenagers could stop Nigel from ushering in his dairy snack, without spilling any, I might add! Kat's dance moves: Where were these moves in Save The Last Dance? Clearly, she left them at the kitchen table... Everything about Ms. Purdy's romance novel: The only qualm I have about Ms. Purdy's tale of Reginald's ~quivering member~ was that we weren't able to read the full novel. Walter's over-protectiveness: As a kid, I thought that Walter was overbearing. As an adult, I totally get it! He delivers babies to under-aged girls / women who aren't ready to be mothers each and every day. He just wants to ensure that he's protecting his daughters from the wiles of horny teenage boys. Also, "and Hell is just a sauna," is one of my fave lines in cinema. Mr. Morgan's entire personality: Listen, these kids were menaces and deserved to be treated as such. Kat's poem: I would be lying if I said I didn't cry right along with Kat as she read her poem about Patrick in front of the class. Shakespeare only WISHED he could write something as impactful. Disney film is 'best ever' as fans declare it 'all time favourite'

The classic film '10 Things I Hate About You' is still loved by fans, with many citing it as their "all-time favourite ". This iconic film, which is an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, became an instant hit with its 1990s high school romance setting. It launched Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger into the spotlight, playing two teenagers in an unforgettable enemies-to-lovers story. For Heath Ledger, who sadly passed away in 2008, this role cemented his status as a Hollywood heart-throb. His performance in the movie continues to draw admiration and affection from viewers around the world. "It's the perfect blend of wit, charm, and heart, all wrapped up in a late '90s high school setting that still holds up today," praised one Rotten Tomatoes critic. They added: "The casting is absolutely chef's kiss - Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt... every single performance is on point!". "Whether it's the iconic bleacher serenade or Kat's emotional poem, this movie nails the balance between comedy and sincerity. Timeless, rewatchable, and just plain brilliant.", reports Surrey Live. Julia Stiles shines as Kat Stratford, the smart, opinionated girl whose strong presence intimidates everyone, including potential suitors. Meanwhile, her sister Bianca, embodies the quintessential all-American girl next door but has her romantic life stifarled by their father's stringent dating rules. At school, Kat encounters a charismatic and attractive new student, Patrick Verona. Initially, he's someone she'd do anything to steer clear of. However, in a twist of events, the seemingly aloof teen lets her guard down and falls for the effortlessly suave Patrick, creating a timeless love story. 10 Things I Hate About You gave birth to some unforgettable movie scenes that continue to be referenced in today's pop culture, including Patrick's heartfelt confession of love. This comedic scene features Heath Ledger serenading 'Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You' from the school bleachers, accompanied by a live brass band, instantly capturing the hearts of viewers. One viewer said: "Fun, funny and light define this film. Heath Ledger steals the show whenever he appears with his charisma, and all the characters work very well comedically and romantically speaking." Another added: "A great 1990s movie with the much-missed Heath Ledger, who shone in everything he acted in. Much fun to be had here with a stellar cast and a brilliant soundtrack." First hitting the screens in 1999, 10 Things I Hate About You was warmly received, so much so that it raked in $21 million within the first five days of release and secured second place at the box office that weekend, trailing behind The Matrix. At the time, Julia Stiles was merely 17 years old, and her co-star Heath Ledger started filming when he was 19, but their on-screen chemistry was undeniably palpable. One fan praised the film, saying: "An intelligent tongue-in-cheek script, a cast with nothing but chemistry, and a great soundtrack still pale in comparison to the way Ledger steals almost every scene in a 90s teen classic that earns its reputation with its madcap humour and charm." For those hankering for a dose of 90s nostalgia, '10 Things I Hate About You' is currently streaming on Disney+.
