Maine senator's letter proposing four provinces join the U.S. is straight-up ignorance combined with arrogance

I hadn't heard of Joseph Martin until five minutes ago, and I bet you hadn't either. Martin is a Republican state senator from a rural corner of Maine, not exactly a power position. Even most Mainers, as they call themselves, would probably have a hard time picking him out of a lineup. But Sen. Martin is suddenly famous, or more accurately notorious, in the inflamed world of Can-Am relations for making what must be the most arrogant, offensive pitch for this country (at least the resource-rich western parts) to join the Great Republic to the South. And that's saying something, given the considerable competition in that space these days.

The Morning After: What to expect at Google's Pixel 10 event tomorrow

After focusing its big Google I/O 2025 on AI tech and Gemini's latest features, Google has new hardware. The next Made by Google event kicks off tomorrow, and Google has already confirmed how at least one of its new phones will look . Expect a little more fanfare than usual. The company dropped a video on X, teasing 'special guests,' including Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Curry, Lando Norris and the Jonas Brothers. Surely, they'll make you buy a Pixel! Leaks suggest Google is giving all of its Pixel 10 phones telephoto cameras in 2025, though it's still possible the phone teased earlier is a Pixel 10 Pro. We're expecting to see four phones in total: Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL and 10 Pro Fold. Then, if you can maintain focus, there's likely to be a new Pixel Watch with smaller bezels and a brighter screen, and maybe even new entry-level Pixel buds. The Pixel 10 launch event kicks off on August 20, tomorrow, at 1PM ET / 10AM PT. We'll be reporting live from the event. Here's a full breakdown of what we're expecting to see. — Mat Smith Get Engadget's newsletter delivered direct to your inbox. Subscribe right here! The news you might have missed It's not as crazy as it sounds. NASA is considering a small nuclear reactor for the Moon, to power a possibly permanent lunar presence. Other power sources have their drawbacks: Solar power is limited by the long two-week lunar nights and sunless craters, making nuclear energy a more reliable and constant power source. A nuclear reactor would also provide a significant amount of energy from a small mass, which is crucial for space travel. Challenges remain, including the system's weight, recent cuts at NASA and the lack of a US company to produce the microreactor itself. Continue reading. Can-Am's first electric ATV can haul more than its gas models It offers 50 miles of range, 47 hp and 'whisper-quiet operation.' Can-Am, part of the motorsports group BRP that recently introduced electric snowmobiles , has just launched its first electric all-terrain vehicle (ATV). The Outlander Electric is designed to be 'whisper quiet' for tasks like herding or hunting, but it can still tow more than its gas-powered counterparts, thanks to the high level of torque. The 8.9 kWh battery will offer around 50 miles (80km) of range, which is half that of a gasoline ATV, depending on the model. The Can-Am Outlander Electric ATV is now available from dealers and Can-Am's website, starting at $12,999. Continue reading. /R E P E A T -- Can-Am Breaks New Ground: Introducing the Outlander Electric, Outlander MAX 6x6, Maverick R X rc, and the First ATV with Semi-Active Suspension/ Français

"Innovation is at the core of Can-Am's DNA," said Julie Tourville, Director, Global Marketing, Can-Am Off-Road at BRP. "The 2026 Can-Am Off-Road lineup marks numerous innovations and industry firsts that showcase our relentless pursuit of the ultimate rider experience. From the first full-size production electric ATV to the next evolution of our Maverick R and Maverick X3 platforms, we are proud to be on the leading edge of the powersports industry." A Quiet Evolution: the All-New 2026 Can-Am Outlander Electric The 2026 Can-Am Outlander Electric redefines utility and adventure for farmers, ranchers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Powered by the same in-house, modular Rotax E-Power powerpack as BRP's electric motorcycles and snowmobiles, this new model delivers 47 hp and 53 lb-ft of torque, with up to 50 miles of range in optimal conditions. It features instant throttle response, selectable ride modes – Normal, Sport, Work – and charges from 20 to 80% in just 50 minutes using a Level 2 charger. What truly sets it apart is its whisper-quiet operation. Outfitted with electric power, noise-reducing XPS Recon Force tires, optimized suspension, and a low-noise cooling system, it enables a smooth riding experience that is perfect for connecting with the land and exploring nature without disturbing it. All of this, while still delivering the true Can-Am experience with industry-leading 1,830 lbs of towing capacity, impressive off-road performance, and more than 120 available accessories to deliver a fully customizable experience for any rider, in any environment. The Ultimate Utility on any Terrain: the Can-Am Outlander MAX 6x6 Engineered to work harder, explore further and power through anything, the Can-Am Outlander MAX 6x6 goes places most ATVs would never dare. With six-wheel traction, a robust chassis and powerful, state-of-the-art Rotax engine packages, the Outlander MAX 6x6 offers unlimited adventure and is the hardest-working ATV in the Can-Am lineup. The Outlander MAX 6x6 Backcountry 1000R features 30-inch tires mounted to beadlock wheels. Also, an arched double A-arm suspension configuration, paired with SHOWA gas shocks, creates an impressively smooth and stable ride with plenty of ground clearance. It's powered by the industry-leading 999cc V-Twin Rotax engine, producing 101 horsepower and 69 lb-ft of torque. With selectable ride modes, Visco-6lok front differential and a refined continuously variable transmission (CVT), power is transferred to the ground with efficiency and precision while also providing riders with more grip and better maneuverability. The Outlander MAX 6x6 is also available in DPS 700 and DPS 850 packages. Developed in some of the harshest weather conditions on extreme terrain, the Outlander MAX 6x6 offers a potent combination of reliable performance and endless versatility. A New Semi-Active Suspension System for the Outlander XT-P and MAX Limited For the first time in the industry, Can-Am is introducing an ATV with a semi-active suspension. Available on Can-Am Outlander XT-P and MAX Limited packages, the Smart-Shox technology electronically adjusts the compression and rebound settings of the shocks to the terrain on the fly, providing the optimal mix of ride comfort and precise handling. The Smart-Shox system offers four distinct ride modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport and Work, the MAX versions include a fifth ride mode: Comfort 2-Up. The system collects real-time data from four position sensors to instantly adjust the valving of the shocks to match the terrain and speed of the vehicle. The result is an incredibly versatile ATV that can cruise comfortably, handle some of the toughest jobs on the ranch and attack the trail, all without manual suspension adjustment. The King of the Rocks: the Can-Am Maverick R X rc First introduced in 2024, the 240-horsepower Can-Am Maverick R has quickly become renowned for its raw speed and all-out desert performance. For 2026, the new Maverick R X rc is flipping the script, bringing purpose-built rock-crawling performance to the Maverick R platform. Can-Am carries a legacy of success at King of the Hammers, including winning the 2025 4400 Unlimited class race in a modified Maverick R. The new X rc package is the result of hard-earned knowledge from one of the toughest rock races in the world. The X rc package includes a range of rock-crawling-specific features like an Extra Low gear range and ROCK mode for the Smart-Lok differential, optimizing rock-crawling capabilities. Furthering its rock-ready capabilities, the X rc is outfitted with industry-first features like massive 35-inch XPS Hammer King tires and an integrated FOX steering damper. Protective components include a heavy-duty HMW plastic skid plate, A-arm protectors, rock sliders and an anti-intrusion bar. Whether riders are tackling Moab, crawling through the Rubicon, or forging their own path, the Maverick R X rc is engineered for conquering some of the most challenging and rockiest terrains. Tried and True Performance: the Can-Am Maverick X3 A mainstay of the Can-Am Off-Road lineup, the Maverick X3 receives key refinements and an additional package offering for 2026. From recreational trail enthusiasts to die-hard racers, the X3 platform offers a wide range of packages to suit nearly any rider. The refinements amplify the rider experience with new technology. /R E P E A T -- Can-Am Launches New Generation Defender Side-by-Side, Engineered to Outperform/ Français

VALCOURT, QC, Aug. 17, 2025 /CNW/ - Can-Am, iconic brand of BRP Inc. (TSX: DOO) (NASDAQ: DOOO), is changing the utility and recreational side-by-side landscape with the next generation of its Can-Am Defender model. Trusted by farmers, ranchers and riders across the world, the Defender is renowned for its power and skill to turn work and play into one. For 2026, this iconic workhorse receives a ground-up overhaul, further solidifying its position as one of the most capable, versatile and reliable utility-recreational side-by-sides on the market. "At Can-Am, we know that the clock never stops for the farmers, ranchers and builders around the world," said Julie Tourville, Director, Global Marketing, Can-Am Off-Road at BRP. "This new Defender platform is built to prove it and match the unstoppable spirit of our hardworking customers. From managing farmland, to running a job site, or escaping to the backcountry, the new generation Defender is all about bringing true value to our riders with practical and best-in-class features, industry-leading technology and reliable performance that they can count on to help them get the job done and beyond." Powertrain At the core of the next-generation Can-Am Defender is an all-new HD11 999cc inline three-cylinder Rotax ACE engine, boasting 95 horsepower and 70 lb-ft of torque. The HD11 powerplant is paired with an all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT) and pDrive primary clutch that are designed to put power to the ground with precision and improve low-speed power delivery, while enhancing reliability. With three new selectable drive modes – Normal, Work and Sport – the engine optimizes performance for the toughest tasks, from towing heavy loads to conquering some of the most demanding terrains. A new intake system promotes airflow to bolster engine performance, while an updated cooling system manages engine temperature and enhances HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) performance. The 2026 Defender XT packages are equipped with a new Quick-4Lok auto-locking front differential, while the Limited, Lone Star and X mr packages carry the automatic, electronically controlled Smart-Lok front differential to maximize traction in most conditions. The new Defender continues to lead the way with best-in-class payload, towing and cargo capacity, and it now comes equipped with a new, larger 11.9-gallon fuel tank that enables longer days on the job or trail. Suspension and Chassis A best-in-class powertrain demands a suspension package and chassis that are up to the task. The 2026 Defender features new suspension geometry with a 65-inch-wide design and 50% larger arched double A-arms. The suspension and steering components are more robust and are assembled with double-bonded bushings, an industry first, for reduced maintenance and a quieter ride. The chassis has also been toughened up for the most demanding work and play scenarios, including improved ROPS. These changes not only increase toughness but also deliver sharper, more stable handling and advanced suspension performance even when the vehicle is loaded down with tools and gear. The Defender features 12 inches of front and rear suspension travel with 15 inches of ground clearance, which are best in class. The turning radius has also been reduced, making tight maneuvers easier than ever. Finally, the new, larger 262mm front brake rotors are gripped by 32mm hydraulic twin piston calipers and new brake pads, providing confidence-inspiring stopping power, even under heavy loads. Workability and Rider Experience Working harder and smarter than ever before, the 2026 Defender offers comfort when riders want it and next-level capability when they need it. The ergonomics start with the largest cab in its class and 8% more leg room than the closest competition. Plus, the adjustable quick tilt steering wheel allows for convenient ingress and egress, while the backrest angle and seat foam have been revised for greater comfort and support. The new Defender Limited and Lone Star packages are equipped with an updated HVAC system, improving cooling and heating capacity. A simple three-knob system provides convenient climate control adjustment. CAB models also benefit from noise, vibration and harshness reduction for better communication with passengers thanks to a new roof liner, rear wall insulation and floor mats. Designed to take the rider experience to the next level, the new 10.25'' Touchscreen Display packs a range of useful features, including a back-up camera and built-in GPS to track every ride and locate friends with or without a phone or network connection. This infotainment system also lets riders seamlessly control music, monitor ride statistics, manage accessories and unlock advanced off-road navigation features through the BRP GO! app. With integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, it supports over-the-air software updates, so owners can effortlessly access the latest features as they become available. The 10.25'' Touchscreen Display comes standard on all Limited and Lone Star models, and it's available as an option on the XT and XT CAB. With over 200 accessories available to choose from, riders can customize their Defender to best suit their riding style and work needs. From convenient LinQ cargo boxes, to the new integrated plow mount and intuitive SMART accessories, this workhorse is a blank canvas ready for personalization. When it comes to outfitting the 2026 Defender with electronic accessories or powering tools and equipment, the new charging system produces 1700 Watts, doubling the output of the previous generation. To enhance the rider's line of sight in low-light conditions, the 2026 Defender features new LED headlights that produce 45% more output than the previous version. In addition, new LED rear lights include backup lights that turn on while in reverse. Designed with the rider in mind, the new Defender offers convenient access to service points, and it has some of the longest service intervals and lowest maintenance costs in the industry. This means less downtime for repairs and more time on the trail or taking on tough jobs. Vehicle Lineup The 2026 Defender HD11 has six distinct model configurations: the Defender XT, Defender XT CAB, Defender X mr, Defender Limited, Defender Lone Star and Defender Lone Star CAB. These configurations are offered in standard (3-seat), except for the Lone Star, and MAX (six-seat) variations for each of them. Defender HD7, HD9 and HD10 models also return for 2026.
