Three Indian shuttlers produced dominant displays to move into the quarterfinals at the ongoing Canada Open 2025. Kidambi Srikanth, Shriyanshi Valishetty, and S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian all registering straight-game wins in their respective Round of 16 clashes. Former World No. 1 Srikanth, who finished runner-up at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 earlier this year, looked sharp as he overcame Wang Po-Wei 21-19, 21-14 in little over 40 minutes. Srikanth will face the top seed and current World No. 6, Chou Tien-Chen, in the last eight. Valishetty, 18, continued to impress in Ontario with another composed 21-15, 21-14 win over Malaysia's Karupathevan Letshanaa in the women's singles draw, setting up a quarter-final clash against Denmark's Amalie Schulz. Twenty-one-year-old Subramanian, meanwhile, will take on third seed Kenta Nishimoto (WR12) in the next round, after breezing past Chinese Taipei's Huang Yu-Kai with a clinical 21-19, 21-14 performance.

Canada Open 2025: Srikanth enters quarterfinals after beating Wang Po-Wei; Shriyanshi also advances
India's Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the quarterfinals of the Canada Open 2025 after beating Chinese Taipei's Wang Po-Wei in straight games on Thursday at the Markham Pan Am Centre. Srikanth beat his opponent 21-19, 21-14 in 40 minutes and will face another Chinese Taipei shuttler — either Chou Tien Chen or Huang Ping-Hsien, both of whom face off in another Round of 16 match. In women's singles, Shriyanshi Valishetty beat Malaysia's Karupathevan Letshanaa 21-15, 21-14 in just 35 minutes. The Indian will next face Denmark's Amalie Schulz, who beat third seed Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei in her Round of 16 match. Later in the day, Sankar Muthusamy will be in action in his match. Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the Round of 16 of the Canada Open 2025, a BWF World Tour Super 300 event, after beating compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat in the first round on Wednesday at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Ontario. Seventh seed Priyanshu started well to win the first game but Srikanth fought back to clinch the match 18-21, 21-19, 21-14 in 53 minutes. Shriyanshi Valishetty upset seventh-seeded Ukrainian Polina Buhrova 21-18, 22-20 to set up a second-round clash with Malaysia's Karupathevan Letshanaa. However, Tanya Hemanth failed to convert two match points and went down 15-21, 24-22, 21-18 to Sung Shuo Yun, the third seed from Chinese Taipei. Ira Sharma, world No. 84 in the badminton rankings, made short work of Germany's world No. 119 Miranda Wilson, cruising to a 21-9, 21-13 victory in just 34 minutes. This was the Indian badminton player's second straight win over her German opponent in as many matches, as per Ira, who made the pre-quarterfinals at the US Open last week after starting from the qualifiers, will next face Bulgaria's Kaloyana Nalbantova in the opening round of the main draw, which will also feature India's Shriyanshi Valishetty and Tanya Hemanth. Meanwhile, Chirag Sen fell short of making the cut for the men's singles main draw at the BWF Super 300 tournament after losing 21-14, 21-10 to Malaysia's Eogene Ewe in the qualifiers. Sen is ranked 137th in the world while Ewe is 98th. The men's singles field at the Canada Open badminton features a strong Indian presence, led by former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth, US Open champion Ayush Shetty, Priyanshu Rajawat and S Sankar Muthusamy. Only two Indian shuttlers, however, will be moving on to the second round with seventh seed Rajawat set to face Srikanth while fifth seed Ayush will stand opposite to Muthusamy in the opening round on Wednesday.
