Mario Martone's ‘Fuori' With Valeria Golino Gets 7½-Minute Ovation At Cannes Premiere

Mario Martone's Cannes Film Festival Competition title Fuori had its world premiere Tuesday night at the Lumière Theater, earning a 7 1/2–minute ovation. From a script by Ippolita Di Majo and Martone, and starring Valeria Golino as writer Goliarda Sapienza, Fuori is inspired by Sapienza's 1983 autobiography L'Università di Rebibbia (The University of Rebibbia) and follows her journey as the Italian publishing world rejects L'arte della gioia (The Art of Joy), the book she dedicated a decade to writing. In particular, Sapienza becomes close with a political activist and repeat offender named Roberta (Matilda De Angelis). Ultimately, the relationship between the two women serves to inspire Sapienza to embrace life and joy once more, although those around her may not understand their continuing strong bond. The Art of Joy was written between 1967 and 1976, and published posthumously, and co-writer and director Martone's casting of Golino as Sapienza has specific relevance since Golino directed a six-part TV adaptation, which aired earlier this year. Elodie Di Patrizi, a singer and actor known as Elodie, stars alongside Golino and De Angelis, the latter known for the Sydney Sibilia-directed Rose Island (2020) and Niccolò Castelli's Atlas (2021). The cast also includes Corrado Fortuna. In 2018, Martone's film Capri-revolution was selected by the Venice Film Festival. Julia Ducournau's ‘Alpha' Overcomes Disruption At Cannes Premiere, Gets 12-Minute Ovation

Four years after winning the Palme d'Or for Titane, Julia Ducournau is back on the Croisette, debuting her latest Cannes Film Festival Competition entry Alpha. Inside the Palais late Monday local time, the genre-bending movie received a 12-minute ovation. The response came after a disruption mid-screening, when some audience members in the gallery section began shouting to stop the movie. It turned out that a person was having a medical emergency. The movie continued, however, and the shouts abated after a minute or two. The person later was carried out on a stretcher. Alpha centers on 13-year-old Alpha (Mélissa Boros), a troubled girl who lives with her single mom. Their world collapses the day Alpha returns from school with a tattoo on her arm. The film is set in the 1980s and '90s. Golshifteh Farahani, Tahar Rahim, Emma Mackey, Finnegan Oldfield and Louai El Amrousy also star and were in attendance tonight. After serving as the U.S. distributor for body horror Titane, Neon is back in business with Ducournau as the North American distributor for Alpha. When Titane was awarded the Palme d'Or in 2021, Ducournau became only the second woman ever to take the top prize (Justine Triet became the third with 2023's Anatomy of a Fall). In a lost-in-translation mix-up at the time, Spike Lee, who was jury president in 2021, prematurely and inadvertently unveiled Titane as the winner early during the closing awards ceremony. Fast forward to tonight: Lee's own film, Highest 2 Lowest, running out of competition, premiered just ahead of Alpha at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Diaphana releases Alpha in France while Charades and FilmNation Entertainment are handling sales in the rest of the world. Producers are Jean des Forêts and Amelie Jacquis of Petit Film and Eric & Nicolas Altmayer of Mandarin & Compagnie, with Frakas Productions co-producing. 'Thank you for being here. I feel very privileged to be here. It's a dream come true. Thank you so much for having me. And, I don't know — sorry? I don't know.' He added: 'This was a great experience. I love all these people around me.' RELATED: The thriller/black comedy is set in May 2020 and stars Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr. and Amélie Hoeferle. RELATED: Phoenix plays small-town Sheriff Joe Cross in the eponymous New Mexico town, where he challenges Mayor Ted Garcia (Pascal) as the Covid pandemic is creating high tension. There's a backdrop of fake news and collective anxiety. In his review, Deadline's Damon Wise wrote, 'Though all its parts don't quite knit together, Eddington is what you might call a big swing, a film that's more serious than it first seems, seeing Covid as the Big Bang that landed us right where we are now.' RELATED: Aster directed and produces Eddington alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg Banner. This marks Aster's fourth feature after the widely acclaimed Hereditary, Midsommar and Beau Is Afraid. Eddington is financed and produced by A24. It releases the film domestically on July 18. Erik Pedersen contributed to this report.
