Nicola Coughlan "watched in horror" at Supreme Court rule on transgender rights
Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan has revealed she watched in "horror" at the UK's ruling on transgenderism. Last month, the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law. The court sided with campaign group For Women Scotland, which brought a case against the Scottish government arguing that sex-based protections should only apply to people that are born female. Judge Lord Hodge said the ruling should not be seen as a triumph of one side over the other, and stressed that the law still gives protection against discrimination to transgender people. But in an Instagram post, Nicola attached the speech she gave at the Canneseries International Festival last week, where she said she was horrified by the ruling. The Galway native said: "I feel incredibly lucky - being a working actor is such a gift. "I love my job not only because I get to do what I'm passionate about; Acting gives me the chance to explore the human condition, to take time to understand people and the world around us. To see what unites and divides us and to understand the power of empathy. "Acting has also given me a platform to speak out about causes I deeply care about, and to help amplify them. "One of the roles I'm most known for is Clare in the sitcom Derry Girls, Clare was a queer character growing up in a society torn apart by decades of sectarian conflict. For a comedy, it tackled these two sensitive issues with remarkable insight - and my connection to them feels especially poignant at this present moment. "Just this past week in the UK, I watched with horror as rights were stripped from members of the LGBTQIA+ community - specifically, the trans community- by the Supreme Court. It was heartbreaking and deeply disheartening to see people celebrating the removal of rights from an already-marginalised group. "In response, I launched a fundraiser in support of the charity Not a Phase who support 4,000 members of the Trans/Non-Binary Community. In just a few days, it's raised over £120,000 - and it continues to grow. This outpouring of support gives me hope, but it also shows that there's a long fight ahead and the time to be a vocal ally is now. "Derry Girls also told the story of young people whose futures were made possible by a ceasefire. "In Northern Ireland, after decades of violence, peace was achieved - with the vital involvement of the United States. Today, as we witness the relentless destruction of Gaza, I can't help but believe that if those in power step in, and all of us with a moral conscience speak up, there can be peace there too. Those children living in fear deserve a future, and we should not sit by in silence. "Art has a unique power to help us understand each other and inspire empathy. Through both my work and my activism, I hope to continue using that power-to stand up for what's right, and to always lead with kindness." Nicola looked stunning at the event in Cannes, when she stepped out in a custom Couture gown, The Peace Lilly Gown, by Robert Wun. The gown featured a corseted bodice, overlaid with delicate pale pink satin and an exaggerated neckline that extended above Nicola's head. It was paired with a matching ruffled shawl and pale pink stiletto heels.

Nicola Coughlan turns heads in sculptural gown at Cannes
Nicola Coughlan made a dazzling red carpet appearance this week, as she stepped out in a stuctured pale pink gown at the Canneseries International Festival on Monday night. The event, now in its 8th year and held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, celebrates television series and the creators behind them, shining a spotlight on talent in the industry. Each festival also includes an award ceremony, with prizes such as Best Series, Best Performance and more. There are also a number of Honorary Prizes given to outstanding series or personalities: CANAL+ Icon Award, Madame Figaro Rising Star Award, Prix de l'Engagement Konbini and the Prix du Public Europe 1. Nicola is this year's recipient fo the Prix de l'Engagement Konbini, which is given to stars who have "distinguished themselves by the artistic quality and societal, innovative and/or revolutionary dimension of their work". She made a dazzling fashion statement as she arrived to collect her award. The Bridgerton star look a leaf out of her Barbie co-star Margot Robbie's outfit playbook in an all-pink ensemble, that perfectly matched the backdrop at the French gala. Nicola wore a custom Couture gown, "The Peace Lilly Gown", by Robert Wun who wrote on Instagram about working with the Galway native, saying: "It has always been a dream to work with Nicola, it is an absolute honour to contribute to this very well deserved and special moment." The gown featured a corseted bodice, overlayed with delicate pale pink satin, and an exaggerated neckline that extended above Nicola's head. It was paired with a matching ruffled shawl and pale pink stiletto heels. Nicola continued her advocacy while accepting her award, speaking about the need for greater support and intervention in Israel's war in Gaza and drawing comparisons with the peace process in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Earlier that day, Nicola dazzled in another striking outfit, wearing a slinky green sequinned column dress with a pale pink cardigan slung around her shoulders. She finished her look with cat-eye sunglasses and pointed silver heels.

The model, 30, oozed androgynous chic as she attended day three of the festival in the south of France as it entered its eighth year. The daughter of former footballer and I'm A Celeb rity star David Ginola looked in good spirits as she turned heads on the red carpet. The Cannes International Series Festival is an international television festival held annually. Carla looked stunning in a beige suit, paired with a simple black tie and pointed stilettos. She added a pair of glasses to complete her chic look, as well as some chunky bangles to accessorise.
