Cannondale Synapse Can Run Your Electronics from One Battery and Has Room For Snacks

The story of the Cannondale Synapse is one of versatility and capability. The newest iteration of this hard-to-categorize machine focuses on real-world gains. But don't brush it off as an endurance or watered-down road bike—the Synapse has teeth. Plus, it's bringing along some extra cool tech, thanks to the updated Cannondale SuperX. What is the Cannondale Synapse? 2015 Cannondale Synapse (Photo/Tyler Benedict) In the early 2000s, Cannondale pulled a bit of a fast one on the road world. They launched the original Synapse—a bike that didn't chase KOMs or world podiums but focused on something refreshingly grounded: real-world performance. It had just enough race pedigree to rip, but brought comfort and stability that let you enjoy the ride. (Photo / Gruber-Images) The Synapse was never the average endurance bike. In 2018, the entire EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale team was aboard the Cannondale Synapse for Paris-Roubaix. It's neither a watered-down race bike nor a limp 'comfort' bike. The Cannondale Synapse is what happens when you take performance seriously—but not so seriously that you forget to smile during a five-hour ride. LAB71 Synapse SmartSense side Meet the New Cannondale Synapse The newest version of the Cannondale Synapse looks fast standing still. Seeming to cherry-pick some of the best features from the Cannondale drop bar lineup, melding them into a comfortable, capable road machine. Every version of the new Synapse (and most of Cannondale's other bikes) centers on Cannondale's Proportional Response design. Size-specific geometry and carbon layups make each frame ride just right for its intended rider. Whether smashing a Gran Fondo or commuting through a midwestern winter, the Synapse always delivers a ride that feels planted, fast, and smooth enough to take the edge off the broken pavement. We expect the same from the newest offering, but some extra. The new Synapse also includes Cannondale's Delta Steerer system and SystemBar integration. The updated design allows cables to route directly through the headset into the head tube and around the new triangular-shaped steerer tube. The design is a triangular truncated steerer (Delta) that allowed the Cannondale design team to create a smaller frontal profile. It basically just chopped off the two sides of the otherwise round steerer tube (narrower at the front, wider at the back), with cables run through the upper bearing on either side of the reshaped steerer. These updates keep things tidy and aero up front (something missing from the previous model), while their signature seatpost D-shaping boosts vertical compliance. The new Cannondale Synapse 2025 will fit a 42mm rear and a 48mm tire in the front. Big Tires and Big Comfort With clearance for up to 42mm tires (48mm up front with appropriate clearance), Synapse riders won't fear chip seal, chunky tarmac, or even light gravel detours. The Cannondale engineering team says the new frame is more compliant than the last generation. How much? 18% more, according to Cannondale. The updated SmartSense uses this slot to house the battery that powers your lights, radar, and even SRAM AXS shifting. Yes, you heard that right. The Synapse can run your drivetrain, radar, and headlight from one centralized power source. Neat. Cannondale hasn't gone into detail about how this system will actually work, and what will presumably be some kind of wiring harness that attaches to the AXS derailleurs, but we've asked for more detail and will update when we get it. Cannondale Synapse 2025 smart sense Updated SmartSense Speaking about SmartSense, the updated Gen 2 gets a slick refresh too. The systems see smaller but brighter lights (up to 800 lumens up front), an integrated Garmin Varia radar/taillight combo, and a removable internal battery that now lasts up to 24 hours. Fewer wires, more ride time. Researchers highlight surprising benefit of e-bike rides for older adults: 'People tend to breathe deeper'

E-bikes might be easier than traditional cycling, but they still offer big benefits. A new study found that "even if you aren't working as 'hard,' your brain may get a bigger boost," particularly for senior citizens, reported Bicycling. This study specifically tested for the differences between seniors who cycled traditionally and those who rode e-bikes. The benefits of exercise were clear for both groups. According to the study, which was published by PLOS One, when older adults rode e-bikes or regular bikes for half an hour three times a week, there was an improvement in their brain function. "We had thought that those who used traditional, pedal-only powered bikes would have the greatest brain and mental health boost, as they would be giving their cardiovascular systems the biggest workout," said psychology professor Carien Van Reekum, Ph.D., according to the University of Reading. "Instead, people who used e-bikes told us that they felt more confident in completing the requested activity of three 30-minute rides a week for eight weeks, compared to pedal bikers," The American Heart Association recommends at least 2.5 hours of exercise per week, but aging individuals might find it challenging to find safe activities to fill that time. Despite the lower intensity and heart rate associated with e-bike riding, it is the quality of being outside in nature that is highly beneficial to seniors. "Outdoor stimulation and physical activity are known to help prevent age-related cognitive decline," said Bicycling. All exercise benefits cognitive function, but exercise combined with time outdoors is extra beneficial, particularly for seniors, but not limited to them. "People tend to breathe deeper when outside," the Mayo Clinic reported. "This helps to clear out the lungs, improves digestion, improves immune response and increases oxygen levels in the blood." For seniors, high-stress exercises might not be wise or even possible. Low-impact exercise is key to staying active into old age. "E-bikes may be even better than regular bikes for improving well-being in seniors who don't typically ride," said Bicycling. There were other surprising benefits, reported Bicycling: "The motor-assisted pedalers performed a little better in processing speed and enjoyed a more improved sense of well-being than the other two groups." This kind of study can also be good news to anyone recovering from common surgeries of the knee, shoulder, or hip. Staying active throughout the healing process can reduce pain, help soft tissues heal, and benefit mental health, according to physical therapy experts. "I got it in the wake of knee surgery, and it has been great," said one commenter who uses an e-bike as well as a traditional bicycle. "I still use my regular Specialized bike, but if my knee aches or feels weak, the Cannondale saves the day. My view is that if someone wants to ride an e-bike, go for it and ignore the so-called purists." Are you thinking about buying an electric vehicle? Yes — in the next 6 months Yes — but not in the next 6 months Already own one Nope Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Overall, getting outside, however you are able, is the most important aspect for well-rounded health and fitness. If you are struggling to find activities to suit your lifestyle, remember that walking regularly, or even something like gardening outdoors, has massive benefits to your mental and physical health. Here's Who Won the Grueling 2025 Andes Pacifico Enduro Race

U.S. enduro racer Marco "Randy" Osborne and Ella Conolly of Scotland took first-places overall for the Pro Men's and Pro Women's categories at the 2025 Andes Pacifico enduro race, held Jan. 14–19 in Chile's Nuble region. Osborne's four-day average time of 87:49.80 and Conolly's 100:25.28 secured their wins."Another amazing Chilean experience in the books,' Truckee, California-based Osborne posted on his sponsor Transition Bike's page. 'I was stoked to grab the win and enjoy 4 days of wild and physical racing with an awesome crew. We got to experience some incredibly raw trails, local accommodations, and some unique culture along the way. I fought hard, and pushed myself day in and day out to make it happen. Stoked on my efforts and how my Sentinel handled the wild Chilean dust!" "Andes Pacifico!! 4 days of wild blind racing from the dusty trails in the Andes all of the way to the Pacific," Conolly, who rides for Cannondale, posted to her Instagram page. "That ocean dip hit hard at the end🥵what a crazy adventure! Still trying to get rid of the dust monobrow🇨🇱❤️Hit some of the gnarliest trails way faster that I would've done if I knew what was there which felt like a nice little skill level up. Also had a good slam on day 2 to keep things even haha." Considered to be one of the world's most challenging mountain bike races, the Andes Pacifico is an enduro race that began in 2014 and took place this year in the Nevados de Chillán region of the Andes Mountains, dropping 26,200 feet over four days before finishing at the Pacific Ocean. Each day is made up of between two to eight special stages, depending on the race category. It is a blind race, meaning that riders don't get the chance to pre-ride the course, and are seeing it for the first time when they race. The first day saw a 42-mile-long course with 13,100-feet of climbing and 16,400-feet of downhill through the Las Trancas Valley. Osborne quickly recovered from a crash and took the day with a 21:39.44 time, barely besting Czech racer Vojtech Blaha at 21:42.03 (Blaha would take third overall). Conolly finished the first day at 24:54.43. Osborne kept his lead during Day Two's 25-mile race to Recinto with a time of 28:27.52, with Glenn MacArthur on his tread at 28:43.25. Conolly finished first at 33:04.02. Osborne took Day Three on Ninhue's forested flow trails with 23:34.66, and Conolly at 26:34.78. Day Four ended in Cobquecura at the Pacific with Osborne at 14:08.18, securing his four-day streak and taking the overall Pro Men's category. A small washout cost Conolly first place for Day Four, coming in second at 15:52.05 behind ever-close Andreane Lanthier Nadeau at 28:05.20, but she still took the overall win with her four-day average of 100:25.28, four seconds ahead of Nadeau's second-place overall time.
