The return of Dame Lisa Carrington

Photo: RNZ / Calvin Samuel Dame Lisa Carrington is back and she hasn't missed a beat. The eight time Olympic champion is back with the elite Canoe Sprint squad after answering an SOS call from the national selectors. Earlier this year Carrington decided she wouldn't compete internationally in 2025 but now is in northern Italy preparing for this month's World Championships. She has replaced an injured Olivia Brett in the K4 boat . General manager of performance for Canoe Racing New Zealand, Nathan Luce, said Carrington was delighted to be involved. "When I picked her up from the airport it was like picking up a rookie," Luce told RNZ. "She was excited to be back, like who wouldn't want to leave winter and be back on the water in 30 degrees and getting back into it with your team-mates and coaches and staff that you've known for all these years. "So yes she's pretty excited." This year Carrington has been considered a part of the training programme without the racing and so Luce has no concerns about her fitness. "She didn't hesitate to get on that plane." She has now had a few days back in the K4 with Alicia Hoskin, Tara Vaughan and Lucy Matehaere. "She hasn't missed a beat and as you'd expect with someone of her calibre and experience it is a handy reserve to have in our programme." Carrington won three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the K1, K2 and K4 boats. The K4 crew in Paris was Carrington, Hoskin, Brett and Vaughan. The 2025 Canoe Sprint World Championships are in Milan, Italy from 20-24 August. Canadian sprint canoeist Katie Vincent sets world record in women's C1 500m

Canadian sprint canoeist Katie Vincent set a world record in the women's C1 500-metre event on Sunday at the national trials in Montreal. The 29-year-old Olympic champion clocked a time of two minutes 0.609 seconds in the final at the Olympic Basin, breaking the previous mark of 2:00.73 set by Alena Nazdrova of Belarus at the 2019 world championships in Szeged, Hungary. 2022 world silver medallist Sophia Jensen of Chelsea, Que., finished one spot behind Vincent in 2:03.159. Vincent, who hails from Mississauga, Ont., became the first-ever Canadian woman to capture Olympic gold in the sport last summer in Paris by winning the C1 200m race — the lone individual women's canoe sprint event at the Games. The two-time Olympian won bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris in the C2 500m event.

Canada's Katie Vincent paddles to canoe sprint gold at World Cup event in Hungary

Canada's Katie Vincent captured gold in the women's C1 500-metre final at a Canoe Sprint World Cup event on Saturday in Szeged, Hungary. Vincent paddled across the finish line in two minutes 5.43 seconds, beating silver medallist Yanan Ma of China (2:06.24) in a tight race. Spain's Maria Corbera took bronze (2:09.14). Vincent is a three-time Olympic medallist. She won gold in the women's C-1 200 at last summer's Paris Games, setting a world-best time of 44.12 seconds. It was Canada's first-ever Olympic gold in a women's canoe or kayak event. The 29-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., also won bronze in the C-2 500 at both the Paris Games and the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
